Plant macrofossil, peat geochemical and chronological data from sub-Arctic European peatlands

This dataset consists of raw data from peat records analysed for plant macrofossils, peat geochemical properties supplemented by chronological control data from high-latitude Sweden, Finland and European Russia. Altogether, 33 peat cores were analysed from 16 peatlands. Peat cores were collected from seasonally thawed active peat layer with a box corer or a so-called Russian corer. Peat records cover both currently intermediate (n= 25) and dry (n= 8) surfaces. Majority of the sites (n= 12) are permafrost peatlands either with sporadic or discontinuous permafrost. Changes in peatland vegetation and peat and carbon accumulation were studied to resolve how high-latitude peatlands react to past and recent changes in climate. Peat properties were examined for bulk density, carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and C/N ratio. C accumulation was calculated for the past two millennia. To establish chronological control, peat layers were dated with 210Pb and radiocarbon 14. To create age-depth models we used Plum and the ages retrieved form the models are found in this dataset. The data have been analysed between 2016 and 2020. More information about the methods can be found from Piilo et al. “Consistent centennial-scale change in European sub-Arctic peatland vegetation towards Sphagnum dominance – implications for carbon sink capacity”. Global Change Biology.

Geochemical data for: Intense overpressurization at basaltic open-conduit volcanoes as inferred by geochemical signals: The case of the Mt. Etna December 2018 eruption

The reported dataset is annexed to the article "Intense overpressurization at basaltic open-conduit volcanoes as inferred by geochemical signals: the case of the Mt Etna December 2018 eruption". It consists of five types of parameters: soil CO2 flux from Mt Etna flanks, CO2/SO2 molar ratio of the volcano plume, SO2 and HCl fluxes by volcano plume, and He isotope ratio in some peripheral gas emissions, all of them recorded in the period 2017–2019. The data come from continuous monitoring networks installed on Mt Etna and from discrete samplings carried out at specific sites, all the monitoring facilities being supported by the INGV-Civil Defence joint surveillance program.

Sedimentary and geochemical data from JRD-S core at Zhuoshui River Delta, Taiwan

The Zhuoshui River drains the Taiwan orogen westward and is the largest river in terms of sediment discharge in Taiwan. The river-deposited fluvial successions were >50 m thick during the Last Glacial in its present delta position, and these successions are thicker than even the Holocene deltaic/estuarine succession. The data sets contain the sedimentary and geochemical data from the Last Glacial fluvial and the present delta sediments within JRD-S core at Zhuoshui River Delta. The data include grain size, carbon proxies, mass accumulation rate of total organic carbon (MAR-TOC), n-alkane biomarkers, and ratios of lithic and higher plant n-alkane in the sediments within the JRD-S core. The measurement uncertainties for TOC and TN are ±3%, while that for δ13Corg is ±0.3‰. The repeated measurement (n=12) for n-alkane gave mean uncertainties between 0.60–5.75%.
