Data from: Survival to independence in relation to pre-fledging development and latitude in songbirds across the globe

Species differ strongly in their life histories, including the probability of survival. Annual adult survival was investigated extensively in the past, whereas juvenile survival, and especially survival to independence, received much less attention. Yet, they are critical for our understanding of population demography and life-history evolution. We investigated post-fledging survival to independence (i.e. survival upon leaving the nest until nutritional independence) in 74 species of passerine birds worldwide based on 100 population level estimates extracted from published literature. Our comparative analyses revealed that survival to independence increased with the length of nestling period and relative fledging mass (ratio of fledging mass to adult body mass). At the same time, species with higher nest predation rates had shorter nestling periods and lower relative fledging mass. Thus, we identify an important trade-off in life history strategies: staying longer in the nest may improve post-fledging survival due to enhanced flight ability and sensory functions, but at the cost of a longer exposure to nest predators and increased mortality due to nest predation. Additionally, post-fledging survival to independence did not differ between species from the northern temperate zone vs species from the tropics and southern hemisphere. However, analyses of post-fledging survival curves suggest that 1) daily survival rates are not constant and improve quickly upon leaving the nest, and 2) species in the tropics and southern hemisphere have higher daily post-fledging survival rates than northern temperate species. Nevertheless, due to the accumulation of mortality risk during their much longer periods of post-fledging care, overall survival until independence is comparable across latitudes. Obtaining high-quality demographic data across latitudes to evaluate the generality of these findings and mechanisms underlying them should be a research priority.

Data from: dispersal sweepstakes: biotic interchange propelled air-breathing fishes across the globe

<p>Synbranchiformes is a phenotypically diverse and species rich clade of freshwater acanthomorph fishes, which include eel- and perch-like, air-breathing and non-air-breathing fishes. The ability to breathe out of water has presumably aided lineages of Synbranchiformes in dispersing across all southern continents except Antarctica. The lack of a well-resolved, time-calibrated phylogeny of Synbranchiformes limits our understanding of the timing and geographic patterns of diversification of these anatomically and ecologically diverse fishes. As a consequence, contemporary interpretations of synbranchiform biogeography invoke scenarios as disparate as Gondwana vicariance and pan-global rafting to explain their modern-day geographic distribution. In this study, we use high-throughput sequencing of ultra-conserved elements (UCEs) to infer a phylogeny for all major synbranchiform lineages. We combine this dataset with existing Sanger sequenced genes and fossil calibrations to infer a comprehensive time-calibrated phylogeny of Synbranchiformes. Then, we use Bayesian methods of biogeographical reconstruction to document the history of dispersal of synbranchiforms, finding support for Southeast Asia as the likely ancestral area of all major lineages. Our results reject the hypothesis of Gondwanan vicariance explaining synbranchiform biogeography, and instead the historical biogeographic analyses support a hypothesis of independent continental invasions by snakeheads, anabantids, and spiny eels. However, there is no signal of elevated lineage diversification rates after these invasions. Instead, higher rates of lineage diversification in spiny eels pre-dates their arrival to Africa, while the high levels of lineage diversification observed in <em>Betta</em> were initiated prior to the flooding of insular Sundaland in SE Asia.</p>

Changes in plant species richness due to land use and nitrogen deposition across the globe

<p>Data and scripts corresponding to the article "Combined effects of land use and nitrogen deposition on plant species richness worldwide". In the article, we quantified the combined effects of land use and nitrogen deposition on terrestrial plant species richness at a 0.25º spatial resolution across the globe. We first determined the proportional changes in plant species richness for different land-use types and N deposition values through meta-analyses of local monitoring data obtained from the literature. We then combined the site-level responses with global land use and N deposition maps in a new multi-pressure species-area relationship (mp-SAR) model to provide estimates of changes in plant species richness at a resolution of 0.25º (about 25 km at the equator) worldwide.</p> <p>In this repository you will find all the data necessary to get the final results and the code in R to guide you through out the analysis.</p>

Identifying environmentally-comparable cities across the globe for urban ecology studies

<p>Defining a comprehensive and quantitative framework for comparing urban areas is a priority for conducting research in urban ecology and related fields. In this study, we use unsupervised learning on a matrix of climate- and human-related features to estimate the number of groups explaining the characteristics of ~6,000 cities across the globe. Using estimates of city-level stability within clusters, we estimate that cities can be clustered in 5&ndash;7 clusters, with 6 being the most likely and stable number of groups. Groups of cities are primarily defined by climatic and geographical features (e.g. elevation), with population-level and land use parameters being less relevant for structuring cities. City clusters generally correspond with a continental-based partitioning. However, geographic distances between cities do not necessarily reflect their position in the examined multivariate space. The analytical framework presented in this paper can be extended to accounting for alternative features to describing cities and their characteristics. We implement an online web application for comparing cities across the globe based on the results presented in this study. This application is expected to inform decisions on where to sample populations or species in cities with either similar or divergent climatic conditions.</p>

Inflation test on eye globe for: Experimental evaluation of stiffening effect induced by UVA/riboflavin corneal cross-linking using intact porcine eye globes

<p><span>UVA/riboflavin corneal cross-linking (CXL) is a common used approach to treat progressive keratoconus. This study aims to investigate the alteration of corneal stiffness following CXL by mimicking the inflation of the eye under the <i>in vivo</i> loading conditions. Seven paired porcine eye globes were involved in the inflation test to examine the corneal behaviour. Cornea-only model was constructed using the finite element method, without considering the deformation contribution from sclera and limbus. Inverse analysis was conducted to calibrate the non-linear material behaviours in order to reproduce the inflation test. The corneal stress and strain values were then extracted from the finite element models and tangent modulus was calculated under stress level at 0.03 MPa. UVA/riboflavin cross-linked corneas displayed a significant increase in the material stiffness. At the IOP of 27.25 mmHg, the average displacements of corneal apex were 307 ± 65 μm and 437 ± 63 μm (p = 0.02) in CXL and PBS corneas, respectively. Comparisons performed on tangent modulus ratios at a stress of 0.03 MPa, the tangent modulus measured in the corneas treated with the CXL was 2.48 ± 0.69, with a 43±24% increase comparing to its PBS control. The data supported that<b> </b>corneal material properties can be well-described using this inflation methods following CXL. The inflation test is valuable for investigating the mechanical response of the intact human cornea within physiological IOP ranges, providing benchmarks against which the numerical developments can be translated to clinic.    </span></p>
