HYDRO-CSI, Project 1.2: In-stream hydrology. Part 1: Groundwater measurements

The continuous exchange of water between surface water and groundwater is a key environmental process controlling the transport and the fate of nutrients, solutes and pollutants in river networks. The dynamics of the near-stream groundwater has a non-negligeable role on controlling flow direction and solutes exchange between the stream water with the adjacent groundwater, however it is rarely considered in solute transport experiments. Despite the amount of individual studies, we are still uncertain about how the physical processes controlling in-stream solutes transport change with different hydrologic conditions and how these processes can be inferred by modelling outcomes.

In this project we investigated groundwater and stream interactions in order to characterize the physical processes that control the water and solute exchange in the river corridor and their variability over time. To do so, we drilled 36 wells in the near-stream domain, and 7 piezometers in the stream channel. We observed the water level and electrical conductivity every 15 min at 22 of the 36 wells with a water level sensor (Orpheus Mini, OTT, Kempten, Germany, resolution of 1 mm and accuracy of ±0.05% FS) over a period of 32 months (July 2018 - March 2021).

The dataset includes the following files:

> "Raw groundwater measurements.xlsx"
This file includes groundwater table elevation measured as depth from the upper limit of the well (time step of 15 minutes, Orpheus Mini, OTT, Kempten, Germany, resolution of 1 mm and accuracy of ±0.05% FS). Every excel file includes also Electrical Conductivity measurements (μS/cm) and Voltage (V) of the instruments. Every sheet in this .xlsx file reports measurement for one sensor in the specific observation-well where it was placed.

> "Groundwater elevation data - wells metadata and fixed groundwater table elevation.xlsx"
This file includes the raw groundwater table measurements measured via the OTT, information on the well network, elevation and location of the observation wells, location of subsurface layers, and suggested correction of the groundwater table measurements for short periods with missing data.

> "Hand-measurements and metadata.xlsx"
This file includes the list of in-situ inspections and hand-measurements of the groundwater table conducted over the entire observation period in every well and piezometer of the groundwater-monitoring well network. Every sheet includes details on the instruments measuring the groundwater table, their offset with hand-measured data, information on their re-calibration, and calculation of the groundwater elevation above the reference plane after each hand-measurement.

HydroGeoSphere Model Input Files and Results for Validation of Pesticide Leaching to Groundwater for Nine EU FOCUS Scenarios

This dataset includes HydroGeoSphere (HGS) model (Aquanty, 2024) input and output files for nine Forum for the Co-ordination of Pesticide Models and their Use (FOCUS) scenarios (EC, 2014) for simulation of leaching of four test contaminants to groundwater. It is recommended that users are familiar with HGS software in order to best make use of the available files. Scenarios are included in separate subfolders named using the first four letters of the FOCUS scenario location name, e.g. folder "chat" contains the model run for the "Chateaudun" scenario. It is recommended that users familiarize themselves with the (EC, 2014) groundwater scenarios. HGS model inputs are specified in the *.grok ASCII text file for each scenario in each subfolder. Soil material properties and evapotranspiration properties are included in HGS input files in ASCII text format in the "material_properties" subfolder. Solute application timing for each scenario are include in the "solute_app" subfolder. And climate times series inputs are included in the "weather" subfolder.

Data from: Species delimitation in endangered groundwater salamanders: implications for aquifer management and biodiversity conservation

Groundwater-dependent species are among the least-known components of global biodiversity, as well as some of the most vulnerable because of rapid groundwater depletion at regional and global scales. The karstic Edwards–Trinity aquifer system of west-central Texas is one of the most species-rich groundwater systems in the world, represented by dozens of endemic groundwater-obligate species with narrow, naturally fragmented distributions. Here, we examine how geomorphological and hydrogeological processes have driven population divergence and speciation in a radiation of salamanders (Eurycea) endemic to the Edwards–Trinity system using phylogenetic and population genetic analysis of genome-wide DNA sequence data. Results revealed complex patterns of isolation and reconnection driven by surface and subsurface hydrology, resulting in both adaptive and non-adaptive population divergence and speciation. Our results uncover new cryptic species diversity and refine the borders of several threatened and endangered species. The U.S. Endangered Species Act has been used to bring state regulation to unrestricted groundwater withdrawals in the Edwards (Balcones Fault Zone) Aquifer, where listed species are found. However, the Trinity and Edwards–Trinity (Plateau) aquifers harbor additional species with similarly small ranges that currently receive no protection from regulatory programs designed to prevent groundwater depletion. Based on regional climate models that predict increased air temperature, together with hydrologic models that project decreased springflow, we conclude that Edwards–Trinity salamanders and other co-distributed groundwater-dependent organisms are highly vulnerable to extinction within the next century.

Sodium, chloride and specific conductance in stream water and groundwater in New Hampshire 1991, 2000 – 2021

Stream water was collected at weekly to monthly intervals at 29 stream sites in New Hampshire (USA). Ten of the stream sites were instrumented with high‐frequency sensors. Twenty-one of the stream sites (including 5 sensor sites) are in the Lamprey River Hydrologic Observatory (LRHO; Wymore et al 2021) and two stream sites were nearby the LRHO. Groundwater was collected from two riparian well fields (JF, 14 wells and WHB, 13 wells). Wells were installed in 2004 and sampled monthly through May 2007, then quarterly until December 2009, after which a subset (JF, 6 and WHB, 5) was generally sampled quarterly. Stream and groundwater samples span a 17-year collection period and were analyzed for sodium, chloride and specific conductance. Methods and findings are described in the associated Limnology and Oceanography Letters manuscript.

Groundwater nitrate concentrations in wells located at the shoreline of West Falmouth Harbor from 2006 to 2023

West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000's. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have been measuring groundwater chemistry in wells installed along the shoreline of the harbor to monitor the spatial and temporal patterns in N loading. Water samples were collected approximately annually from 2006 through 2009, and less frequently in subsequent years, and processed for nitrate + nitrite. Full analysis details are available in Hayn et al. 2025 in Estuaries and Coasts (doi: 10.1007/s12237-025-01630-0).
