Prairie manure application impacts on floral abundance, plant growth, plant community structure, insect and spider community abundance and activity density in experimental plots in Ames, Iowa (2021-2022).

This dataset contains results from a two-year field experiment at Iowa State University’s Horticulture Research Station to evaluate the effects of dairy manure application on native prairie plant and insect communities. We established replicated 4 m² plots across two field types, an established tallgrass prairie and a tilled crop field, and applied four manure treatments (weekly, biweekly, once per season, and control) using liquid slurry from a local dairy farm. Plant responses were monitored through weekly measurements of mortality, ground cover, floral abundance, plant height, and visual obstruction. Insect communities were sampled biweekly using vacuum suction for foliage and flower visitors and pitfall traps for ground-dwelling arthropods. Collected insects were identified to order, with Hymenoptera and Carabidae further resolved to family or genus.

Data for 'Weak latitudinal gradients in insect herbivory for dominant rangeland grasses of North America'

Data for Kent et al. Accepted manuscript in Ecology and Evolution, with abstract: Patterns of insect herbivory may follow predictable geographical gradients, with greater herbivory at low latitudes. However, biogeographic studies of insect herbivory often do not account for multiple abiotic factors (e.g. precipitation, soil nutrients) that could underlie gradients. We tested for latitudinal clines in insect herbivory as well as climatic, edaphic, and trait-based drivers of herbivory. We quantified herbivory on five dominant grass species over 23 sites across the Great Plains, USA. We examined the importance of climate, edaphic factors, and traits as correlates of herbivory. Herbivory increased at low latitudes when all grass species were analysed together and for two grass species individually, while two other grasses trended in this direction. Higher precipitation was related to more herbivory for two species but less herbivory for a different species, while higher specific root length was related to more herbivory for one species and less herbivory for a different species. Taken together, results highlight that climate and trait-based correlates of herbivory can be highly contextual and species specific. Patterns of insect herbivory on dominant grasses supports the hypothesis that herbivory increases towards lower latitudes, though weakly, and indicates that climate change may have species-specific effects on plant-herbivore interactions.

Invertebrates of the Andrews Experimental Forest: An annotated list of insects and other arthropods, 1971 to 2002

This publication is not a pro forma species list; rather, it has been generated as the result of diverse ecological studies centered on and around the Andrews Forest beginning in 1971. No attempt has been made to exhaustively collect the area with methodologies appropriate to each invertebrate group. This list provides some insight into the enormous invertebrate diversity present in the coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest. It provides reference material for investigators who might be engaged in ecological investigations. We hope that these data, set in an ecological context, will stimulate collaboration and facilitate the design of future research.

Aquatic insect sampling in Lookout Creek at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, 2001

The database contains data from samples collected during the summer of 2001 on aquatic macroinvertebrates along Lookout Creek. Three data tables comprise the database. The two larger tables contain the taxonomic composition and abundances from samples collected using small (0.25m2 ) emergence traps and pan traps (0.19m2). Taxonomic resolution differs by order; for some taxa we identified individuals to family, genus, and species, some to family and genus, and others to family only. A third small data table is a complete list of taxa from the three orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera.

Total numbers per square meter and taxa of insects taken from the Kuparuk River during the summer of 2001, Arctic LTER 2001.

A Surber sampler (25 X 25 cm frame fitted with a 243 um mesh net) was used to sample invertebrates at several different stations. Two replicates were taken from each station. The same sampling procedure was used for all dates. The stations were measured relative to the site of the dripper ("-" = upstream of the dripper). Samples were preserved in 4% formaldehyde and transported to Orono, Maine, where invertebrates were removed by hand under 15X magnification and then identified and counted. All values are converted to individuals per square meter.

Total numbers and species of insects taken from rock scrubbings during the summer of 1984-1988, 1993-1994, 1996-1998, in the Kuparuk River experimental reach near Toolik Field Station, North Slope Alaska..

A rock-scrubbing technique was used to collect bottom samples at several different stations with three replicates at each station in the Kuparuk River. The stations are measured relative to the 1984 phosphorus dripper. Only July sampling dates are included in this file (ACG). The samples were preserved in ethanol then picked, sorted, counted, and measured in Duluth using a NIKON MICRO-PLAN II digitizing pad.

Effects of Hurricane Opal on foliar chemistry and insect herbivores at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory in 1997: foliar chemistry data

Hurricane damage results in tree mortality and variation in both light and nutrient availability for the individuals that remain. In turn, resource availability influences the interactions between plants and insect herbivores. We report effects of Hurricane Opal on the phenolic chemistry and levels of defoliation on surviving trees at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory in North Carolina. We measured foliar astringency, hydrolysable tannins, and condensed tannins in the foliage of red maple and red oak saplings in hurricane damaged and undamaged sites. We estimated inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus availability in the soil, and the accumulated leaf area removed by insect herbivores. The foliar astringency of both red maple and red oak was higher in sites damaged by the hurricane. Later in the growing season, condensed tannin levels were significantly higher in the foliage of red oak in damaged sites. There were no consistent differences in ammonium, nitrate, or phosphate availability between damaged and undamaged sites. Despite higher foliar astringency of trees in sites damaged by Hurricane Opal, levels of defoliation by insect herbivores were higher in damaged than in control sites on both tree species. Apparent increases in putative defensive compounds following hurricane damage did not protect trees from herbivory.

Holocene insect fossil data for Indian Peaks Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park, 1985 and 1993.

Insect fossil assemblages were analyzed from the Indian Peaks Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park. Assemblages span the last 10,000 years revealing climate change and the response of both insects and vegetation in the montane to upper subalpine zones. The Longs Peak Inn Bog site (LPIB) yielded insect assemblages ranging in age from recent to 3500 yr BP. This insect fossil record suggests climatic cooling at about 1800 yr BP and between 250 and 300 yr BP (AD 1700-1850). The bog may experience colder microclimates than the surrounding forests, yielding insect assemblages reflective of the colder, local microclimate. Also, alpine and upper subalpine insects may have been washed into the catchment basin of the bog from nearby slopes. Assemblages from four additional Front Range sites suggested a climatic optimum between 9000 and 7000 BP. Faunal evidence indicates a tree-limit decline at 4500 BP. Declining forest-tundra insect ratios, combined with the conifer macrofossil record, suggest a climatic deterioration from 4500 to 3100 BP followed by a rapid amelioration, from 3000 to 2000 BP. A gradual decline in the forest-tundra ratios occurred after 2000 BP, reaching 1:1 ratios at or before 1000 BP.
