Investigating Multi and Many-Objective Metaheuristics to Support Software Integration Testing
<p>In spite of the fact that Search-Based Software Testing (SBST) is a very appealing field today, there are few studies that deal with software integration testing and, even so, most of these works are not truly related to the generation of test cases to this testing level. In this paper, we present a method, InMeHy, which aims at investigating the use of metaheuristics to derive integration test cases based on C++ source code. A graph is created based on the code which represents the integration of several classes of the application. Multi and Many-Objective metaheuristics (Evolutionary Algorithms) were considered to generate integration test cases and were assessed via three quality indicators. Results show that the traditional Indicator-Based Evolutionary Algorithm (IBEA) turned out to be the best out of four algorithms evaluated, including newer Many-Objective strategies such as Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-III (NSGA-III).</p>
Data from: Testing the link between phenotypic evolution and speciation: an integrated paleontological and phylogenetic analysis
1. The punctuated equilibrium model predicts that phenotypic change is concentrated into pulses associated with speciation, with little change otherwise accruing in established lineages. Paleontological tests of this model have generally lacked an adequate phylogenetic and modeling framework, whereas tests relying on extant populations lack direct constraints on the evolutionary dynamics within lineages. 2. The present study extends a modeling approach developed in comparative studies and applies it to a clade with a rich fossil record, the deep-sea ostracode genus Poseidonamicus. Using a phylogenetic framework and an independent set of shape traits plus body size, a model was fit that allows estimation of anagenetic (within-lineage) evolution, cladogenetic (speciational) change, and geographic variation within species. 3. Maximum-likelihood parameter estimates suggested dominantly speciational change for only one or two shape traits, depending on model assumptions. For the remaining shape traits and body size, the contribution of anagenesis was always substantial. Confidence limits on these solutions were quite broad (though narrower when multiple traits were analyzed jointly), with most traits consistent with both strongly anagenetic and strongly cladogenetic change. 4. Whereas uncertainty about phylogenetic topology and species limits has little influence on the conclusions, assuming stasis instead of Brownian motion within lineages shifted support to solutions in which speciational change was more dominant, although several traits remained dominantly explained by anagenetic evolution. 5. These results suggest that for the traits and taxa examined, anagenesis contributes substantially to long-term divergence. The uncertainty in the results highlights the analytical difficulty of decomposing anagenetic and cladogenetic sources of phenotypic evolution, even with fossil constraints. When model uncertainty is taken into account, the task of doing so using observations from entirely extant populations is even more daunting.
Data from: Low reversed cyclic loading tests for integrated precast structure of lightweight wall with single-row reinforcement under a lightweight steel frame
Given the development of precast structures for low-rise residential buildings, this study explores a new structure—namely, an integrated precast structure of lightweight recycled-concrete wall with single-row reinforcement—under a lightweight steel frame filled with recycled concrete (integrated precast structure for short). The lightweight steel frame and lightweight wall cooperate to bear the forces. The applied concealed bracing, either a rebar bracing or a steel plate bracing, increases the shear resistance of the wall. The lightweight steel frame is designed to bear the vertical loading, whereas the seismic load in the horizontal direction is jointly borne by the frame and wall. This study presents the results of low reversed cyclic loading tests on nine specimens of integrated precast structures. An analysis is then carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of the specimens; based on these results, a formula for the force-bearing performance of the inclined section is developed. The results show satisfactory performance as an integrated piece; the proposed structure has two seismic lines of defence, with the lightweight wall restraint by the side frame being the first line and the steel frame being the second line. Because the failure of the wall can be categorised as shear failure, the restraint of the lightweight steel frame significantly reduces the potential damage of the wall. As the beams and columns of the steel frame tend to bend against failure, the wall filling helps resist sliding. Therefore, the reinforced joints of the connecting beams and columns show no visible signs of damage, indicating that the connection between the beams and columns is reliable. The narrow spacing of rebars and the setting of concealed bracing contribute to the increase in ductility and energy efficiency and the evident reduction in the failure process. Furthermore, the recycled concrete increases the seismic resistance of the structure.
Data from: Behavioral, energetic, and color trait integration in guppies: testing the melanocortin hypothesis
Individuals of the same population differ consistently from each other in the average expression of behavioral and physiological traits. Often, such traits are integrated and thus correlated with each other. However, the underlying proximate mechanisms generating and maintaining this among-individual covariation are still poorly understood. The melanocortin hypothesis suggests that the melanocortin pathway can have pleiotropic effects linking the expression of melanin-based coloration with physiological and behavioral traits. In the present study, we test this hypothesis in adult male guppies (Poecilia reticulata), by estimating among individual correlations between behaviors (activity, feeding, boldness, display and chase during courtship), stress response (peak metabolic rate), and coloration (black spot, fuzzy black, orange). The lack of correlation of any behavior or metabolism with black coloration indicates that the melanocortin hypothesis is not supported in this species. However, we observed covariation among coloration traits, as well as among behavioral traits. Our findings suggest that, although there appear to be constraints within sets of related traits, coloration, physiology, and behaviors can potentially evolve as independent modules in response to selection in this species.
Data from: Patterns and processes in complex landscapes: testing alternative biogeographic hypotheses through integrated analysis of phylogeography and community ecology in Hawai'i
The Island of Hawai'i is a dynamic assemblage of five volcanoes with wet forest habitat currently existing in four distinct natural regions that vary in area, age, and geographic isolation. In this complex landscape, alternative assumptions of the relative importance of specific habitat characteristics on evolutionary and ecological processes predict strikingly different general patterns of local diversity and regional similarity. In this study we compare alternative a priori hypotheses against observed patterns within two distinct biological systems and scales: community composition of wet forest vascular plant species and mitochondrial and nuclear genes of Drosophila sproati, a wet forest restricted endemic. All observed patterns display strong and similar regional structuring, with the greatest local diversity found in Kohala and the windward side of Mauna Loa, the least in Ka'ū and Kona, and a distinctive pattern of regional similarity that likely reflects the historical development of this habitat on the island. These observations largely corroborate a biogeographic model that integrates multiple lines of evidence, including climatic reconstruction, over those relying on single measures, such as current habitat configuration or substrate age. This method of testing alternative hypotheses across biological systems and scales is an innovative approach for understanding complex landscapes and should prove valuable in diverse biogeographic systems.
Data from: Sex-related online behaviors, perceived peer norms and adolescents' experience with sexual behavior: testing an integrative model
Research on the role of sex-related Internet use in adolescents' sexual development has often isolated the Internet and online behaviors from other, offline influencing factors in adolescents' lives, such as processes in the peer domain. The aim of this study was to test an integrative model explaining how receptive (i.e., use of sexually explicit Internet material [SEIM]) and interactive (i.e., use of social networking sites [SNS]) sex-related online behaviors interrelate with perceived peer norms in predicting adolescents' experience with sexual behavior. Structural equation modeling on longitudinal data from 1,132 Dutch adolescents (Mage T1 = 13.95; range 11-17; 52.7% boys) demonstrated concurrent, direct, and indirect effects between sex-related online behaviors, perceived peer norms, and experience with sexual behavior. SEIM use (among boys) and SNS use (among boys and girls) predicted increases in adolescents' perceptions of peer approval of sexual behavior and/or in their estimates of the numbers of sexually active peers. These perceptions, in turn, predicted increases in adolescents' level of experience with sexual behavior at the end of the study. Boys' SNS use also directly predicted increased levels of experience with sexual behavior. These findings highlight the need for multisystemic research and intervention development to promote adolescents' sexual health.

Optimizing Class Integration Testing with Criticality-Driven Test Order Generation
<p>The generation of class integration test orders (CITOs) is a pivotal element in integration testing, which focuses on determining the optimal order for integrating classes while testing an object-oriented system. Due to a high number of dependencies and their possible error proneness, some classes are more critical than others in a program. Existing methods for handling these classes only assess risk in terms of their dependencies; they do not consider historical bug information as an additional indicator and mainly work on small programs. </p> <p>To overcome these limitations, this paper introduces Criticality-Driven CITO (CD-CITO) generation, an innovative approach to optimize CITOs by focusing on class criticality. CD-CITO assesses both the importance of a class in terms of its dependencies and the likelihood of defects, based on historical bug data, to determine a criticality score. Then, it reformulates the CITO generation problem as a reinforcement learning task and uses the Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C) algorithm to address it. We propose a novel reward calculation strategy to guide the learning agent, balancing stubbing costs with the criticality values of classes to optimize the test order. To extract fault proneness information and access the approach, the paper uses Defects4j, a data set that contains real bugs and patches of Java programs. The results obtained show that CD-CITO effectively identifies and prioritizes highly critical classes and also minimizes stubbing costs while generating CITOs, which makes it a valuable tool for integration testing.</p>
