Carbon Dynamics Along a Permafrost Gradient at Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (CPCRW) in Interior Alaska: Specific Leaf Area (SLA) for alder (Alnus crispa) and black spruce (Picea mariana) in a 75x75m spatial domain along a permafrost and vegetation gradient.

This dataset includes depth-resolved soils data from September 2014 coring: soil pH, gravimetric soil moisture, roots/rocks, bulk density, humification indices as determined by FTIR, total elemental composition (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur), depth to mineral horizon, thickness of the moss layer, percent groundcover at the sampling location of several common species, and soil temperature at the time of coring. Project summary: Specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area per unit dry mass) is a key canopy structural characteristic, a measure of photosynthetic capacity, and an important input into many terrestrial process models. Although many studies have examined SLA variation, relatively few data exist from high latitude, climate-sensitive permafrost regions. We measured SLA and soil and topographic properties across a boreal forest permafrost transition, in which forest composition changed as permafrost deepened from 54 to >150 cm over 75 m hillslope transects in Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed, Alaska. This is an exploratory study to begin understanding SLA variation and controls thereof in a non-contiguous permafrost system.

Aspen Fungal Canker Inventory at Previoulsy Established Monitoring and Inventory Plots Across Interior Alaska, Sampled 2016-2018

This dataset contains characterization of 88 study sites and inventory data for individual trees at these study sites recorded between 2016-2018. Canker was inventoried within previously established networks of long-term monitoring and inventory plots scattered across interior Alaska, and within additional sites selected specifically for this study. These included sites within the Bonanza Creek (BNZ) Experimental Forest (BCEF), and sites within the BNZ Regional Site Network (RSN), both maintained by the BNZ Long-Term Ecological Research program (BNZ LTER). We also surveyed plots within the Cooperative Alaska Forest Inventory (CAFI) network, a network of 203 sites representing a wide range of mature boreal forest stands scattered across interior and south-central Alaska including the Kenai Peninsula.

Developmental stages of bud primordia in Vaccinium vitis-idaea across 16 sites in Interior Alaska 2017-2019

This dataset contains the stages of the flower bud primordia (buds prior to anthesis) for Vaccinium vitis-idaea at 19 sites in the Fairbanks area for two cohorts (one initiated in 2017 and matured in 2018, and one initated in 2018 and matured in 2019). Developmental stages were tracked from early June to early October, and then again the following May. Buds were classified as basal, middle, or apical. Developmental stages are based on scanning lectron microscopy. Associated data describe temperature for each interval (period between collection dates), along with site characteristics (location, canopy cover, and depth of thaw in late May).
