<p>Photograph taken from a UAV showing excavations at archaeological site 3 in Kaliszany, Wągrowiec commune, Poland. It is a stone and earth structure in which a hoard of metal objects dating to the Late Bronze Age was discovered in 1943. The photo is from the 2022 survey, when the south-western part of the structure was explored. </p> <p>The paper and data were prepared as part of a project funded by the National Science Centre, Poland: <em>A Biography of Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages Hoards. Stanwick Late Iron Age oppidum: QGIS-LIDAR
2M DTM LIDAR model: Stanwick Late Iron Age oppidum, Iron Age and medieval settlement, early Christian church and sculpture and post-medieval emparkment. It was the trading and power-centre of the Brigantes. An enclosed oppidum is a nucleated settlement of the Late Iron Age, covering an area in excess of 10ha, whose boundaries are marked by large earthworks comprising a bank and outer ditch, which are generally taken to be of a defensive nature. They contain evidence for a variety of activities, suggesting that they were centres within which a range of economic, political, and religious services were concentrated. Many examples contain evidence for the development of zones within which particular activities (productive or ritual) appear to have been concentrated. Enclosed oppida have generally been dated from the late second/early first century BC and continued in use to the first century AD. Ulaca's Iron Age Shrine
Ulaca, Amblés valley (Avila Spain), is an Iron Age oppidum with an extension of 70 ha and 3 km wall. It's one of the largest fortified settlement in the Iberian Penninsula having its heyday between the III B.C and 50 A.D The most prominent monuments within the oppidum are the sauna and "the sacrifice altar". A rectangular shape rock, 16x8 m, with a double stair and a system of intercommunicated concavities. The function of this structure has been deduced from latin inscriptions of the Panoias Altar (Vila Real, Portugal) wich testify the sacrifice of animals. The altar is aligned with the surroundig picks like Risco del Sol, coinciding the slope of the exterior stairs with the winter solstice. Pérez Gutiérrez, M. 2009. Eight iron age (from 500 BC to 1200 AD in Finland) graves in Käräjämäki, Eura, Finland. The graves were originally small mounds that contained wooden coffin. Sovutinske Iron Age Hillfort — pit No. 3 / 2020
The pit discovered during the excavations of Sovitinske Iron Age Scythian Hillfort in 2020. The shape of a pit was reconstructed using SfM-photogrammetry (81 images) for further volume calculation. Particle-size distribution of Iberian unfired potsherds from the Late Iron Age
<p>This data set contains 38 particle-size distributions (PSD) of unfired potsherds from the Iberian workshop of the Mas de Moreno (Teruel, Spain). The distributions were obtained by laser diffraction.</p> <p><strong>Method</strong></p> <p>The PSDs were measured using a LA-950V2 (HORIBA) laser granulometer.</p> <p>All the samples were pre-treated with hydrogen peroxide to remove organic matter. The samples were then dispersed in water using sodium hexametaphosphate and ultrasonication.</p> <p>The PSDs were calculated using the Mie solution to Maxwell's equation, with 1.33 as the water refractive index and 1.55-0.1i as the sediment refractive index.</p> <p><strong>Data description</strong></p> <ul> <li><em>sample:</em> sample reference;</li> <li><em>date:</em> date of the analysis;</li> <li><em>laboratory:</em> analysis laboratory;</li> <li><em>H2O2:</em> has the sample been pre-treated with hydrogen peroxide?</li> <li><em>HCl:</em> has the sample been pre-treated with chloridic acid?</li> <li><em>HMP:</em> has the sample been dispersed with sodium hexametaphosphate?</li> <li><em>ultrasonication:</em> duration of ultrasonic dispersion (seconds);</li> <li><em>0.011</em> to <em>3000.000: </em>relative amount (percent) for the given grain size (micrometers).</li> </ul>
454-sequence data of Iron Age cattle from Althiburos – Tunisia
<p>The Maghreb is a key region for understanding the dynamics of cattle dispersal and admixture with local aurochs following their earliest domestication in the Fertile Crescent more than 10,000 years ago. Here, we present data on mitochondrial <em>D-loop</em> sequences obtained for 12 archaeological specimens of Iron Age (~2,800 cal BP–2,000 cal BP) domestic cattle from the Eastern Maghreb, i.e. Althiburos (El Kef, Tunisia). Maternal lineages were assigned to the elusive R and ubiquitous African-T1 haplogroups found in two and ten Althiburos specimens, respectively. Our results corroborate the introgression of aurochs females into the domestic stock of cattle from Althiburos. </p>
