Kuskokwim River Floodplain: White Spruce (Picea glauca) annual tree-ring width measurements (mm) at breast height from tree-core samples taken above Red Devil on the Kuskokwim River in July, 2007
This dataset contains annual raw ring width measurements in the Tucsan (decadal format) (.rwl file extension) of 14 large white spruce trees growing within 50m of the Kuskokwim River. Ring-widths were measured to 0.001mm on a velmex laser micrometer and accuracy was checked by crossdating using COFECHA. Annual values were measured from 1779-2006.
Leaf leachate chemistry and uptake metrics in headwater streams July 2015
This dataset contains the results of uptake experiments conducted at Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed in July 2015. The objective of the study was to determine the relative influence of molecular composition and nutrient content of organic matter on the retention of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in boreal streams. We measured in situ rates of carbon uptake in streams following introduction of leachates derived from of alder (Alnus incana ssp. tenuifolia), poplar (Populus balsamifera), and white spruce (Picea glauca) trees subject to long-term fertilization with nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P). We measured leachate composition through chemical analysis and optical properties (absorbance and fluorescence).

This dataset contains the data and R code associated with Heslop et al. 2021 "Soil Enzymes Illustrate the Effects of Alder Nitrogen Fixation on Soil Carbon Processes in Arctic and Boreal Ecosystems" published in Ecosphere. Activities of acid phosphatase, beta-glucosidase, and phenoloxidase, as well as %N, C, P, and Mo, 15N and 13C natural abundance, resin extractable P, and SOM chemsitry using FTIR spectroscopy were measured for soils taken under alder (Alnus viridis ssp. fruticosa) canopies and 5 m away. Samples were collected in the Arctic at sites near Sagwon Bluffs and the Lupine-Sagavanirktok river confluence as well as in the boreal forest at BNZ LTER sites UP3a-c and at sites located near BNZ LTER site WDI6.
Morphological and nutritional characteristics of Gambel's Quail, Callipepla gambelii, in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, Arizona (July-September 2015)
Gambel's Quail, Callipepla gambelii, are gregarious birds commonly found in the southwestern deserts of the United States and Northwestern Mexico. With expanding urbanization, these birds are often found in exurban and suburban areas where they have access to food sources that may differ from those used by birds living in rural-urban fringes. To investigate this question, we compared the morphology and nutritional physiology of quail sampled at sites varying with respect to land use and cover. We hypothesized that quail living in urbanized areas have access to a greater variety of food sources and to more stable food resources, and so are in better body condition, than quail residing in less urbanized areas. We sampled birds at locations in the Phoenix, Arizona (USA) area, that vary with respect to land use and cover types. Birds were weighed and we measured their body length and chest circumference. A blood sample was collected from the jugular vein of each individual for analysis of plasma glucose, total proteins, triglycerides, and free glycerol using commercially available kits. Consistent with our hypothesis, birds living in more urbanized environments were longer, and they had larger chest circumferences and greater circulating triglyceride concentrations than birds living in less developed areas, suggesting greater access to lipid-rich foods. In addition, the abundance of grass at the sampling sites was associated positively with plasma protein concentrations but negatively with plasma free glycerol levels. Areas with more grass may provide birds with less dietary fats than the diet of urban birds, resulting in the breakdown of triglycerides into free glycerol. These findings are the first to demonstrate an association between urbanization and the morphology and nutritional physiology of Gambel's Quail.

This dataset provides information on the relative abundances of air breathing fauna (dugongs, dolphins, sea snakes, marine birds, and sea turtles) in the study area of the Eastern Gulf of Shark Bay, Western Australia. The dataset comprises transects that quantify animal abundances in three microhabitats (shallow seagrass banks, seagrass bank edges, and deep sandy channels). These microhabitats vary in their food supply as well as their potential to facilitate or inhibit detection and escape from predators, mainly the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). As a result these data have been used to examine risk-specific habitat use behaviors of these fauna, in addition to general abundance estimates.

Mangrove soil phosphorus addition experiment from July 2013 to August 2013 at the mangrove peat soil mesocosms (FCE), Key Largo, Florida - Nutrients in Surface Water and Aboveground Biomass
Sea levels in South Florida are conservatively predicted to rise by 0.60 m by 2060. The key mechanisms that maintain coastal peatland elevation against increasing sea level are organic matter accumulation via plant production and mineral sedimentation rates (Smoak et al. 2013). Although coastal mangrove soils are regularly inundated with seawater, little is know about the drivers of carbon sequestration (above or below ground) versus atmospheric efflux under different conditions of salinity and elevated phosphorus (P) associated with sea-level rise and storm surge. A recent study using mangrove peat soils found that seawater inundation reduced soil carbon efflux losses and salinity concentration had little effect on carbon retention or loss pathways. The next logical steps are to understand how plant-soil interactions affect above and below ground carbon processes, as well as how increases in P associated with storm surge from the Gulf of Mexico will influence physical, chemical and biological components of mangrove soils that are associated with above and belowground carbon processes. We will manipulate P in inundated peat soil mesocosms with disturbed and undisturbed red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) seedlings to identify some of the fundamental mechanisms of soil elevation and carbon cycling given expected increases in seawater-based P availability in South Florida coastal mangroves.
Institutional Dimensions of Restoring Everglades Water Quality -Interview Notes (FCE), September 2014-July 2015
These data were compiled through semi-structured and open-ended interviews as part of the Institutional Dimensions of Restoring Everglades Water Quality research project. The notes represent responses from farmers, agricultural extension agents, state and federal government officials, private water consultants, and nonprofit officials involved in the implementation of the Everglades Forever Act regulations. These mandate that farms in the Everglades Agricultural Area implement best management practices to reduce phosphorus enrichment. Since the regulations started in 1994, water quality has steadily improved. The research sought to explain why the regulations have been effective.
Field survey of mangrove regeneration, porewater variables, and light in mangrove forests in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, July 2020 - August 2022
This dataset package encompasses measurements from field surveys of mangrove regeneration, porewater variables, and light conditions across six mangrove sites in the coastal Everglades. The goal of this project was to quantify mangrove regeneration of seedlings and saplings in mid- and downstream locations within three estuaries in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA. We assessed the effects of porewater variables and light conditions on the observed regeneration patterns. The package includes seven datasets: FCE1268_Porewater: Contains measurements of porewater salinity, sulfide, ammonia, nitrite, orthophosphate, and nitrate at a 30 cm depth. Porewater surveys were conducted biannually from 09-10-2020 to 05-17-2022. See also similar porewater data for Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) long-term sites in data packages knb-lter-fce.1169 and knb-lter-fce.1171, which contain data for SRS-5 and SRS-6, available in the FCE LTER website's data catalog or the EDI repository. FCE1268_Foliar_Nutrient_Content dataset, collected in August 2022, includes measurements of foliar nutrient content (total carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus) for three mangrove species (A. germinans, L. racemosa, R. mangle) of two life stages—seedlings (height < 1 m) and saplings (height ≥ 1 m and Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) < 2.5 cm). FCE1268_Light contains light intensity (foot-candle) measurements taken at 1-hour intervals from 09-18-2020 to 08-29-2022 at mangrove sites and converted photosynthetic active radiation values from an outdoor mesocosm experiment. FCE1268_Sapling_Density provides biannual count measurements of individuals at the sapling plot level (4 m^-2) within each site from 07-09-2020 to 08-29-2022. Environmental and periphyton composition data from Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands, Florida, USA, July 2022 - November 2022
Environmental and periphyton data were collected from transects in the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands (BBCW) during the wet and dry seasons of 2022 to investigate the rate of carbonate sediment production by periphyton. Environmental data include surface water metrics (pH, salinity, conductivity, and water depth) and soil depths. Periphyton data include nutrient, production, and diatom species composition in samples collected from artificial substrates (periphytometers) placed in the field. Data collection for this project is complete, although the South Florida Management District continues to monitor these transects for a larger ongoing BBCW project.
Benthic chlorophyll concentrations and gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates in surficial estuarine intertidal sediments at sites on Sapelo Island and near the Satilla River from January, April, June and July 2001
Seasonal patterns of estuarine creek-bank and intertidal marsh benthic chlorophyll and gross oxygenic photosynthesis were investigated at several sites on Sapelo Island and the Satilla River in coastal Georgia. Benthic chlorophyll were measured in the bulk surface centimeter depth of sediment. Gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates were integrated over 100 um resolution measurements below the sediment water interface using oxygen microelectrodes. Several relatively pristine sites on Sapelo Island (Moses Hammock, Dean Creek and Marine Institute) and a presumably heavily impacted site (Dover Bluff) show similar levels of chlorophyll concentration and photosynthesis rate across bank and marsh zones with higher photosynthetic biomass and activity in the spring season. Nutrient inputs to these study sites are also suggested as a control on gross oxygenic photosynthesis rates as evidenced by a relationship between photosynthesis rate and land-use.

Plant richness survey of mainland, barrier island and back-barrier hammock island locations around Sapelo Island and St. Simons Island, Georgia, in June-July 2005
I conducted a plant richness survey of 59 sites around Sapelo Island and St. Simons Island, Georgia, in June-July 2005. Sites were chosen to include a range of mainland, barrier island, and back-barrier hammock island locations. All sites were dominated by salt marsh plant species, primarily Spartina alterniflora. To provide a general indication of the salinity conditions prevailing at each site, I measured salinity of the nearest body of water with a refractometer on the date that the site was sampled. Plant richness was documented along a single 5.0m wide transect at each site. Each transect began at the lower elevational limit of vegetation and continued perpendicular to the water's edge to the shrub community at the upper marsh border. Plant presence was noted in a series of nested subplots within a 1.0m x 5.0m plot at each meter along the transect. The results posted here are sites, position, salinity, and the site pool, or species encountered at the site.

GCE-LTER Hammock Well Vegetation and Invertebrate Monitoring - July 2008
In July 2008 the GCE LTER program selected two hammocks for intensive study: HN_i_1 and PC_i_29. HN_i_1 is of Holocene origin and is located adjacent to Blackbeard Island to the north of Sapelo Island, Georgia. PC_i_29 is also of Holocene origin and is located adjacent to the south end of Sapelo Island. These hammocks are of similar size, with similar vegetation zones in the high marsh environment. Groundwater well transects were established that run from the upland, through the marsh, and up and over the upland area of each hammock. Two permanent plots were established at each well in order to characterize the plant and invertebrate diversity and abundance by surveying plots once a year. This data set includes the results of July 2008 monitoring studies.
