UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Reef Performance Standard - Kelp Acres
These data describe annual estimates of the area (in acres) of medium-to-high density adult giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, supported by the artificial reef polygons of Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA (33.40210N, 117.62420W). Data collection began in 2009 to evaluate the ability of Wheeler North Reef to compensate for losses of kelp forest habitat and associated biota caused by the operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: These data describe the abundance and size of fish species as part of SBCLTER's kelp forest monitoring program to track long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This study began in 2000 in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. The abundance and size of all taxa of resident kelp forest fish encountered along permanent transects are recorded at nine reef sites located along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel and at two sites on the north side of Santa Cruz Island. These sites reflect several oceanographic regimes in the channel and vary in distance from sources of terrestrial runoff. In these surveys, fish were counted in either a 40x2m benthic quadrat, or in the water parcel 0-2m off the bottom over the same area. The two tables in this data package include: 1) The annual benthic fish community survey which was conducted on 11 reefs once a year around late July or early August; and 2) The monthly fish survey which was conducted once a month at a subset of the sites (3 of the annual sites) The time period of data collection for the annual benthic fish community survey varied among the 11 kelp forest sites. Sampling at BULL, CARP, and NAPL began in 2000, sampling at the other 6 mainland sites (AHND, AQUE, IVEE, GOLB, ABUR, MOHK) began in 2001 (transects 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 at IVEE were added in 2011). The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: These data represent values of biomass density for more than 200 species of macroalgae, invertebrates and fish measured in fixed plots at five reefs as part of a long-term experiment designed to evaluate the effects of disturbance to giant kelp on the structure and productivity of the benthic community. Taxon-specific relationships between size and mass were applied to field measurements of species abundance to estimate biomass density of each species. Kelp metapopulations: Semi-annual time series of giant kelp patch area, biomass and fecundity in southern California, 1996 - 2006
These data describe the patch-scale canopy biomass and population fecundity of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, in southern California, USA, from 1996¬ to 2007. Biomass of the surface canopy was estimated using diver-calibrated Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus satellite imagery. Fecundity was estimated from canopy biomass pixel data using a seasonally-adjusted relationship between the diver-measured density of giant kelp spore-bearing tissue and the Landsat estimate of canopy biomass density using data collected across five years at the San Clemente Artificial Reef, located offshore of San Clemente, California, USA. Landsat pixel-scale estimates of giant kelp biomass and fecundity were summed across space for each giant kelp patch and averaged across time separately with two semesters each year (January–June and July–December). Kelp metapopulations: Semi-annual time series of spore dispersal times among giant kelp patches in southern California, 1996 - 2006
These data describe the estimated dispersal duration of spores of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, among patches in southern California, USA, from 1996 to 2006. Asymmetrical and dynamic estimates of giant kelp spore dispersal durations among patches were estimated for 6-month periods (January - June and July - Dececember, 1996 - 2006) using minimum mean transit times connecting source and destination connectivity cells in a high-resolution, three-dimensional, spatiotemporally-explicit ocean circulation model (Regional Oceanic Modeling System, ROMS). Minimum transport times between giant kelp patches were assumed to be proportional to minimum transport times between ROMS cells and the alongshore distance between giant kelp patches

This dataset contains time series of kelp canopy area for giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, and bull kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana, and canopy biomass of giant kelp derived from Landsat satellite imagery along with time series of environmental variables known to be associated with kelp forest dynamics. Data are organized into a single NetCDF file and kelp canopy data are co-located with the nearest environmental data point.
SBC LTER: Beach: Local and regional kelp wrack inputs to sandy beaches
These data describe the inputs of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) to sandy beach ecosystems in the Santa Barbara Channel. The local dataset details the average number of kelp plants deposited in 100 m wide segments of coastline over the course of 66 months, from August 2015 through July 2021. Data are presented as the overall average as well as the seasonal averages for each segment. The coordinates of each segment are provided as well as the overall average dry beach width and the beach orientation for each segment. The regional dataset details the average wrack cover from cross-shore transects and the average number of kelp plants deposited on the 1 km stretch of beach for 24 sandy beach sites in a 100 km long region of coastline along the Santa Barbara Channel. The coordinates of each site are provided as well as the dry beach width and the beach orientation. Data are contained in two tables: 1) the local 25 km dataset with 250 total segments, and 2) the 100 km regional dataset with 24 total study beaches.

These data describe the abundance of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, at Santa Cruz Island (north shore), Santa Barbara Channel, California. The number of Macrocystis fronds were recorded along permanent transects at 11 sites, and sampling is designed to complement both the SBC LTER Reef Kelp Forest Community Survey study and other long-term data from Santa Cruz Island. Sampling began in 2011, and this dataset is updated annually.

Conservation Genetics. 10:1915-1917 doi: 10.1007/s10592-009-9853-9 Abstract: We report the isolation and characterization of 16 microsatellite loci to study the population genetics of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera. Markers were obtained by screening a genomic library enriched for microsatellite motifs. Of the 37 primer pairs defined, 16 amplified clean polymorphic microsatellites and are described. These loci identified a number of alleles ranging from three to forty (mean= 16.5, and gene diversity ranging from 0.469 to 0.930 (mean= 0.774). The isolation and characterization of these highly polymorphic markers will greatly benefit much needed studies on the molecular ecology of this important macroalga. These data report the isolation and characterization of 16 microsatellite loci to study the population genetics of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera. 180 samples of blade tissue were collected at Carpinteria Reef, Santa Barbara Channel, CA (USA) in July 2006. Sequence data are available from GenBank. These data were published as a Technical Note in the journal Conservation Genetics in 2009.
SBC LTER: Reef: Feeding relationships for kelp forest species
These data are an assembled food web for all species sampled in the SBC LTER annual kelp forest community surveys. Relationships are taken from literature review on diets and consumption habits of target species, plus searches of theses, grey literature, and student report databases at major west coast libraries. Only feeding observations from studies that showed direct consumption or provided strong evidence of a direct feeding relationship between two taxa were used. Our final food web was revised and verified after consultation with several experts in the field of kelp forest community ecology. See Methods section for complete information on cited literature and contributing experts. Data package includes data and R code for the examination of geospatial genetic structure (SGS) and simulation of inbreeding in giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) from the Santa Barbara Channel, California. Data are reported for microsatellite markers from individual giant kelp plants from Carpinteria Reef, Mohawk Reef and Goleta Bay, collected during September 2009. Relative X and Y coordinates (meters) were recorded for each specimen sampled. R code consists of two scripts, a) to calculate mean number of alleles per locus, and observed and expected heterozygosity, and b) to simulate self-fertilization and sibling/cousin relationships. SBC LTER: Kelp blade characteristics to support turnover dynamics of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera in the Santa Barbara Channel
These data describe the age-specific changes in the size and related traits of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) blades in the Santa Barbara Channel (Isla Vista Reef) during the spring and summer of 2012-2013. Data are contained in three tables: 1) a time series of change in blade size with age due to growth and senescence for blades growing at different depths and locations in the kelp forest, 2) physical traits of blades (biomass density, nitrogen, chlorophyll a) of different ages collected at different depths and locations in the kelp forest, and 3) photosynthetic performance (Pmax, alpha) of blades of different ages collected at different depths and locations in the kelp forest. These data were used to test whether spatial variation in the turnover dynamics of giant kelp blades could be could be explained by leaf life span theory developed for higher plants. The data were also used in a mathematical model of frond growth and senescence to investigate the relative and absolute magnitude of blade senescence in a kelp forest, and to examine how these losses were affected by light availability. Kelp forest fish communities environmental DNA samples from Santa Barbara Channel
The dataset in this package is the processed fish community structure inferred from 12S eDNA metabarcoding in the Santa Barbara Channel. 49 water samples were collected across 11 sites in 2017 and the taxa were identified to the highest resolution possible. The raw DNA sequence has been archived in the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) database (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sra) under the accession number PRJNA667508. SBC LTER Darwin Core Archive: Kelp Forest Reef Fish Abundance
These data describe the abundance of reef fish as part of the Santa Barbara Coastal LTER program (SBC LTER) to track long-term patterns in kelp forest reef species abundance and diversity. The study began in 2000 in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA, and the time series is ongoing and updated approximately annually. Abundances of all taxa of resident kelp forest fish encountered along permanent transects are recorded at nine reef sites located along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel and at two sites on the north side of Santa Cruz Island. These sites reflect several oceanographic regimes in the channel and vary in distance from sources of terrestrial runoff. In these surveys, fish were counted in either a 40x2m benthic quadrat, or in the water parcel 0-2m off the bottom over the same area. This dataset is formatted as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A, occurrence core). All taxa are counted (using an open species list), and abundances are zero-filled for each taxon not encountered. This is a derived data product and less-processed data may be available. SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Experimental Reef Survey - Giant Kelp Outplant Size-Specific Survivorship
These data describe the size-specific survivorship of laboratory-reared embryonic giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, outplanted at an artificial reef (Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA). In summer 2000 divers deployed an average of 56 outplant units containing embryonic kelp to 14 modules of Wheeler North Reef. Size specific survivorship was measured by recording the number and size of outplanted kelp on surviving outplant units three and eleven months after deployment. Measurements of size were categorical and included small single blades (recruits), multi-bladed plants less than 1m tall, and multi-frond plants equal or greater than 1 m tall.
UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Reef Survey - Kelp Size and Abundance
These data describe annual estimates of the size and abundance of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, at three subtidal reefs collected as part of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Mitigation Monitoring Program. Data collection began in 2009 at an artificial reef (Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA) and two natural reference reefs (San Mateo Kelp in Orange County, CA and Barn Kelp in San Diego County, CA). In the summer of each year, divers counted the number of fronds > 1 m tall on each giant kelp plant encountered in five 20 m2 quadrats uniformly distributed along semi-permanent transects at each reef.
SBC LTER: Spatial definitions of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) patches in southern and central California
These data describe the spatial definitions of patches of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, in central and southern California, USA, using a 27-year time series of giant kelp canopy biomass from Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper satellite imagery (1984-2011). Giant kelp patches were delineated using a spatial synchrony-based method that avoids the consolidation of adjacent, independently fluctuating local populations into "megapatches". The method uses a network theory modularity approach to optimally cluster Landsat pixels into patches based on suitable habitat area (i.e., all areas containing giant kelp, 1984-2011) and the spatial synchrony of canopy biomass. Kelp Metapopulations: Macrocystis pyrifera microsatellite marker biogeography study
Dataset contains microsatellite genotypes specific for Macrocystis pyrifera (giant kelp). Table 1 describes seven loci from blades collected from 62 sites from Alaska, USA, to Baja California, Mexico, and Table 2 blades collected at 38 sites (subpopulations) in central California (Monterey Bay).
