Unique and shared effects of local and catchment predictors over distribution of hyporheic organisms: does the valley rule the stream?

This dataset describe the distribution of two hyporheic crustacean taxa (Bogidiellidae, Amphipoda and Anthuridae, Isopoda) in streams of New Caledonia. We sampled the two taxa at 228 sites. At each site, we quantified nine local predictors related to habitat area and stability, sediment metabolism and water origin, and eight catchment predictors related to geology, area, primary productivity, land use and specific discharge.

Development of Cost-Effective High-Modulus Asphalt 5. Report Date Aug. 2021 Concrete (HMAC) Mixtures Using Crumb Rubber and Local Construction Materials in Louisiana

One of the emerging solutions to enhance the durability of asphalt pavements is the use of a French asphalt mix
known as “High-Modulus Asphalt Concrete (HMAC).” This mix uses a hard asphalt binder, high binder content
(about 6%), and low air voids content as compared to Superpave mixtures. The key objective of this study was
to develop a cost-effective HMAC mixture using crumb rubber and local materials in Louisiana. To achieve this
objective, four HMAC mixtures were prepared using two asphalt binders (PG 82-22 and PG 76-22 plus 10%
crumb rubber) and two Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) contents (20% and 40%); additionally, a
conventional Superpave mixture in Louisiana was prepared as a control mixture. The laboratory performance
of these five mixtures was evaluated in terms of workability, dynamic modulus, rutting resistance, and cracking
resistance. The AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design software was also used to estimate the long-term field
performance of these mixtures. Results indicated that the HMAC mixture prepared with 10% crumb rubber and
20% RAP successfully met the French mix design specifications for HMAC and LaDOTD specifications. This
HMAC mix outperformed the control Superpave mix in terms of dynamic modulus, rutting resistance, and
cracking resistance. Additionally, this HMAC mixture can reduce the required asphalt thickness by 1.5 or 2
inches based on traffic level. The cost-effectiveness analysis indicated that this HMAC mixture was more costeffective
than conventional Superpave mixtures in Louisiana. In addition, this mixture is environmentallyfriendly
since it can reduce the disposal of scrap tires in landfills.

Effects of Body Shadowing in LoRa Localization systems

The purpose of this database of measurements with and without body obstruction is to provide the scientific community with a tool to evaluate different localisation methods in these scenarios. The measurements were performed in an outdoor environment with a semi-dense and dense vegetation, located at the Universidad del Norte in Colombia. The data presents the RSSI values transmitted by a LoRa WisTrio RAK5205 node and received by four Risinghf LoRaWAN gateways composing the network, operating at 915 MHz. Additionally, the node and gateways locations in geographic coordinates are provided. Measurements were made by placing the node on a tripod for each test position (scenario without human shadowing - NHS) and then placing the node on a person's chest (scenario with human shadowing - HS) for the same positions.

The database is composed of three groups:
- Raw data:
RSSI_NHS_raw.csv: Containing 50 packets per position in No Human Shadowing scenario.
RSSI_HS_raw.csv: Containing 50 packets per position with reception at 3 or 4 gateways, in Human Shadowing scenario.
- Cleaned data: Only for the 16 node positions where the messages were received at the four gateways, after outlier removal (See https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/62954-mean_removing_outliers_tukey-x-rmzerovals?s_tid=mwa_osa_a).
NHS_16ps.csv: Containing 40 packets per position in No Human Shadowing scenario.
HS4GWs_16ps.csv: Containing 40 packets per position in Human Shadowing scenario.

Additionally, the geographical coordinates for the gateways are provided in the PosGWs.csv file.

The methodology for data collection and the first results will be published in a research journal.

Low-cost, local production of a safe and effective disinfectant for resource-constrained communities

Improved hygiene depends on the accessibility and availability of effective disinfectant solutions. These disinfectant solutions are unavailable to many communities worldwide due to resource limitations, among other constraints. Safe and effective chlorine-based disinfectants can be produced via simple electrolysis of salt water, providing a low-cost and reliable option for on-site, local production of disinfectant solutions to improve sanitation and hygiene. This study reports on a system (herein called "Electro-Clean") that can produce concentrated solutions of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) using readily available, low-cost materials. With just table salt, water, graphite welding rods, and a DC power supply, the Electro-Clean system can safely produce HOCl solutions (~1.5 liters) of up to 0.1% free chlorine (i.e.,1000 ppm) in less than two hours at low potential (5 V DC) and modest current (~5 A). Rigorous testing of free chlorine production and durability of the Electro-Clean system components, described here, has been verified to work in multiple locations around the world, including microbiological tests conducted in India and Mexico to confirm the biocidal efficacy of the Electro-Clean solution as a surface disinfectant. Cost estimates are provided for making HOCl locally with this method in the USA, India, and Mexico. Findings indicate that Electro-Clean is an affordable alternative to off-the-shelf commercial chlorinator systems in terms of first costs (or capital costs), and cost-competitive relative to the unit cost of the disinfectant produced. By minimizing dependence on supply chains and allowing for local production, the Electro-Clean system has the potential to improve public health by addressing the need for disinfectant solutions in resource-constrained communities.

Evaluation of the Performance and Cost-Effectiveness of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) Produced from Region 6 Local Materials

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17CLSU05. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"The project objective is to develop cost-effective Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) with locally available ingredients in Region 6 to address the deficiencies observed in ordinary concrete materials. The study explored the utilization of two types of river sands (coarse and fine), two types of PVA fibers (long and short), four levels of cement replacement with Class F fly ash, and the implementation of recycled crumb rubber in the performance of ECC materials. A total of 24 mix designs were prepared and evaluated in compression, tension, and bending to assess its mechanical properties. Furthermore, the cracking characteristics of the materials produced were evaluated to assess the durability potential of these composites. Lastly, the cost of each mix design and the feasibility of ECC implementation in transportation infrastructure were assessed. The experimental results showed that implementing crumb rubber and/or increasing contents of fly ash in the mixtures produced a positive impact in the ductility of the materials. However, a tradeoff between ductility and strength was observed. Furthermore, the utilization of the different types of sand evaluated in this study produced minor effects in the mechanical properties of ECCs evaluated. The properties of the materials developed in this study were exceedingly superior than that of regular concrete. It was concluded that ECC materials are promising for the future of transportation infrastructure."

Data for: Local conditions matter: Minimal and variable effects of soil disturbance on microbial communities and functions in European vineyards

Soil tillage or herbicide applications are commonly used in agriculture for weed control. These measures may also represent a disturbance for soil microbial communities and their functions. However, the generality of response patterns of microbial communities and functions to disturbance have rarely been studied at large geographical scales. We investigated how a soil disturbance gradient (low, intermediate, high), realized by either tillage or herbicide application, affects diversity and composition of soil bacterial and fungal communities as well as soil functions in vineyards across five European countries. Microbial alpha-diversity metrics responded to soil disturbance sporadically, but inconsistently across countries. Increasing soil disturbance changed soil microbial community composition at the European level. However, the effects of soil disturbance on the variation of microbial communities were smaller compared to the effects of location and soil covariates. Microbial respiration was consistently impaired by soil disturbance, while effects on decomposition of organic substrates were inconsistent and showed positive and negative responses depending on the respective country. Therefore, we conclude that it is difficult to extrapolate results from one locality to others because microbial communities and environmental conditions vary strongly over larger geographical scales.
