OpenAIRE and FAIR Data Expert Group survey about Horizon 2020 template for Data Management Plans
<p>This dataset is published in 2017 by the OpenAIRE project and the FAIR Data Expert Group.</p> <p>It contains two survey data files, two pdf-files summarising the results in a report and an infographic, and a Readme.txt file.</p> <p>The OpenAIRE project supports the open science ambitions of the European Commission. The project and in particular the Research Data Management team provide support, training and information on the Open Research Data Pilot. In this context, a survey was carried out to collect feedback on the Horizon 2020 template for Data Management Plans (DMPs). The team collaborated with the FAIR data expert group, which is providing recommendations to the European Commission on turning FAIR data into reality. One of the specific tasks of the Expert Group is contributing to an evaluation of the Horizon 2020 approach to DMPs, including future revisions of the template and the development of additional sector/ discipline-specific guidance. The aim of the survey was to collect experiences of researchers and DMP reviewers with the DMP template and guidelines on FAIR data management in Horizon 2020. The survey assesses the usefulness of the guidelines and any aspects that are confusing and unclear to determine what improvements can be made.</p> <p>Feedback was sought from both researchers and research support staff. The survey was initially scheduled to run from 22 May to 21 June 2017. Several organisations were asked to help announce the survey, including OpenAIRE’s National Open Access Desks, the FAIR data expert group, FOSTER, LIBER, and the RDA Interest Group on Active DMPs. When the first survey responses showed only a small share of researchers, more stakeholders were contacted to specifically target this community. The European Research Area was approached, whose project officers circulated the survey call among award holders of EC projects. Early-career researchers were also informed through the YEAR network and EURODOC. This resulted in an extension of the survey to 21 July 2017.</p> <p>At the close of the survey on 21 July 2017, a total number of 289 responses were reached. 50% of the respondents indicated that they were researchers, and 60% that they were (also) research support staff. OpenAIRE and the FAIR data expert group are very pleased with this balanced outcome and would like to thank all colleagues and organisations who promoted the survey, as well as everyone who took part in it.</p> <p> </p>
Knowledge gaps on trade-offs of soil carbon sequestration related to soil management strategies
<p>The database contains 87 unique literature items (29 reviews, 42 meta-analyses, 16 original papers) describing the effect of a soil management strategy (tillage management, cropping systems, water management, cover crops, crop residues, livestock manure, slurry, compost, biochar, liming) on the trade-offs between soil carbon sequestration or SOC change and N2O emission, CH4 emission and nitrogen leaching. Since some literature items describe effects of several SMS categories, the database_summary tab comprises a total of 112 unique inputs. For each input it is indicated in the Database_summary tab if it was used as input for the "Soil management effect assessment" in Maenhout et al. (2024) [Maenhout, P., Di Bene, C., Cayuela, M. L., Diaz-Pines, E., Govednik, A., Keuper, F., Mavsar, S., Mihelic, R., O'Toole, A., Schwarzmann, A., Suhadolc, M., Syp, A., & Valkama, E. (2024). Air Traffic Management hotspots in Europe with airline cost functions
<p>This dataset contains data related to Air Traffic Management hotspots. Hotspots are created in the European airspaces when capacity for some pieces of airspace are foreseen to be infringed due to weather, congestion, strikes, etc. This anonymised dataset records around 5900 hotspots happening at 22 major European airports. These hotspots are generated through a simulator called Mercury that is fed with real data (in particular, real capacity reduction that happened in Europe for over a year, schedules etc) and simulates a day of operation, randomising events like delays, cancellation etc. More details on mercury can be found here [1] and [2].</p> <p>The data, anonymised in terms of airports and airlines, is a dictionary which is structured as follows:</p> <p>- the top level key is the id of the airport, the value is list a of all regulations available for this airport.</p> <p>- each item of the list is a dictionary, with keys:</p> <p> -- 'slot_times': list of all slots available to flights for this hotspot/regulation, in minutes since midnight.</p> <p> -- 'etas': list of initial estimated arrival times of flights involved in the regulation, in minutes since midnight.</p> <p> -- 'flight_ids': list of flight ids (in the same order than etas)</p> <p> -- 'cost_vectors': list of cost vectors. Each item is a list itself, of length equal to the slot_times list. Each element of that list is the estimated cost that the airline owning the flight would incur, were the flight be assigned to this slot, in terms of: maintenance, crew, rebooking fees, market value loss, and curfew infringement, in 2014 euros. Dataset SUC1/S1-S4: Cyberattack scenarios on DER energy management and control
<p><span>This sandboxing use case focuses on advanced energy management and control applications for DERs, which are essential for optimizing their operation and achieving key objectives. These objectives include tracking the awarded power generation according to energy market clearing processes, avoiding intense power imbalances caused by intermittent weather-based RES, and increasing the profitability of DER owners. By leveraging real-time control strategies, the management system can dynamically adjust flexible DER operations to improve the overall response of aggregated DERs, based on both RES and Battery Storage Systems (BSS). Since this use case requires active control of an BSS and its operation can be severely affected in case of a cyber-attack, it is crucial to examine this scenario in a controlled and non-invasive environment enabled by a sandboxing testing environment (the KIOS CoE Cyber-physical sandbox) to avoid any disturbance to the actual power infrastructure.</span></p> <p><span>This dataset collection is related to the four comprehensive cyber attack scenarios which target the Modbus TCP communication ptotocol used for transmitting m<span>easurements from smart meters of RESs and DERs to DER controller, as well as s<span>et-points sent to flexible DER inverters from DER controller, aiming to </span></span>affect the proper operation of the DER energy managemnet and control function. Review of existing modelling studies focusing on specific soil-based ecosystem services (SES) and threats (ST) including climate change, management and land use change scenarios.
<p><span>We </span><span>reviewed existing modelling studies focusing on soil ecosystem services (SES) and soil threats (ST) including climate change, land use change and management scenarios. A publication has been submitted and is currently being reviewed. The title of the manuscript is: </span><span>Assessing and mapping soil ecosystem services and soil threats changes in agroecosystems through scenario-based approaches – a systematic review. </span></p> <p><span>Work was split between various authors. All Co-authors were working on either one or more SES or one ST. Excel sheets were prepared by INRA and BFW to ensure the comparability of results that members extracted from the papers found. Literature search was done in Scopus and Web of Science. The final list of related publications is reported here. <br></span></p>
Research Data Management and Sharing for images: beautiful fountains require ugly piping!
<p>The consensus is clear: research data funded by public resources should be shared. Globally, the advantages of sharing research data are widely recognized. It promotes transparency and validation, reduces redundant efforts, accelerates discovery, enhances equity, and increases the impact of research through collaboration and efficient use of resources.</p> <p>Image data, however, presents unique challenges. Advanced technologies produce large, multimodal, and multiplexed datasets that span multiple targets across various spatiotemporal scales.</p> <p>This image data comes from a range of sources—such as optical, electron microscopy, and medical imaging—each with specific technical requirements. Managing this complexity is a daunting task without global metadata standardization as well as robust Research Data Management and Sharing (RDMS) cyberinfrastructure to bring it all together.</p> <p>The figure illustrates a common issue: while the importance of the <strong>“beautiful fountains”</strong> of scientific discoveries and medical treatments is widely understood, fewer people recognize the <strong>need to invest in building the often ignored “ugly plumbing” </strong>required to build a strong RDMS cyberinfrastructure.</p> <p> </p>

<p>This dataset and these scripts supports the article 'Assessing the potential of co-composting rose waste as a sustainable waste management strategy: Nutrient availability and disease control' as published in Journal of Cleaner production. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jclepro.2023.136685</p> <p>Roses are an important crop for the floricultural sector of Kenya and roses are a perennial crop and under continuous production for six to ten years. The cultivation produces large quantities of green waste, up to 50 kg per hectare per day. In this experiment we investigated the potential of co-composting rose waste on a small scale. The objective was to increase the understanding of composting lignocellulosic rose waste, which will help with the implementation of composting practices within Kenyan rose production and thereby reduce its negative ecological impact.</p> <p>In a small-scale composting system (30L) the evolution of five mixtures was closely monitored in terms of their physico-chemical parameters. Furthermore, the in-vitro disease suppressive capacity of mature rose waste was assessed. </p>

Crop-specific global fertilizer application rates from "Closing yield gaps through nutrient and water management"
<p>Crop-specific global maps of N, P2O5, and K2O fertilizer application rates circa the year 2000 from the following paper:</p> <p>Mueller, ND, JS Gerber, M Johnston, DK Ray, N Ramankutty, and JA Foley. 2012. Closing yield gaps through nutrient and water management. <em>Nature</em> <strong>490</strong>: 254–257</p> <p>Data are provided at five arc-minute resolution and are saved as netcdf files. Fertilizer application rates are estimated from reconciling various national and subnational data sources. See the Supplementary Information from the 2012 paper for a full description of data sources and methods. Data quality for each grid cell is described in a map layer. Files containing the text "totalcons" sum nutrient consumption across crops per grid cell, using crop harvested areas from Monfreda et al. 2008 Global Biogeochemical Cycles. For maize, wheat, and soybean N application rates, additional maps and csv files (containing the text "politboundaries") identify the political units around the world containing unique information. Crops and crop group categories are consistent with those utilized in Monfreda et al. 2008 Global Biogeochemical Cycles.</p>

The functional consequences (ecosystem response) of shifts in communities are shaped not only by changes in species richness, but also by compositional shifts that result from species losses and gains. Species differ in their contribution to ecosystem functioning, so species identity underlies the consequences of species losses and gains on ecosystem functions. Such research is critical to better predict the impact of disturbances on communities and ecosystems. We used the ‘Community Assembly and the Functioning of Ecosystems’ (CAFE) approach, a modification of the Price equation to understand the functional consequences and relative effects of richness and composition changes in small non-volant mammal and dung beetle communities as a result of two common disturbances in North American prairie restorations – prescribed fire and reintroduction of large grazing mammals. Previous research in this system shows dung beetles are critically important decomposers, while small mammals modulate much energy in prairie food webs. We found that dung beetle communities were more responsive to bison reintroduction and prescribed fires than small non-volant mammals. Dung beetle richness increased after bison reintroduction, with higher dung beetle community biomass resulting from changes in remaining species (context-dependent component) rather than species turnover (richness components); prescribed fire caused a minor increase in dung beetle biomass for the same reason. For small mammals, bison reintroduction reduced energy transfer through the loss of species, while prescribed fire had little impact on either small mammal richness or energy transfer. The CAFE approach demonstrates how bison reintroduction controls small non-volant mammal communities by increasing prairie food web complexity, and increases dung beetle populations with possible benefits for soil health through dung mineralization and soil bioturbation. Prescribed fires, however, have little effect on small mammals and dung beetles, suggesting a resilience to fire. These findings illustrate the key role of re-establishing historical disturbance regimes when restoring endangered prairie ecosystems and their ecological function.</p>

Sea-level rise and freshwater management are reshaping coastal ecosystems in the Florida Everglades
Datasets include hydrology (water level and salinity), net ecosystem exchange of CO2, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and air temperature for a freshwater marl prairie, brackish marsh ecotone, and saline scrub mangrove forest. Data were derived from multiple sources, including two sites from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) DBhydro web database, two sites from the Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research (FCE-LTER) program and three AmeriFlux sites in the Southeastern Everglades region. Ameriflux sites were co-located with FCE-LTER sites. To understand the effects of sea level rise and freshwater management on landscape carbon exchange (C), we measured the net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) between subtropical wetland ecosystems and the atmosphere along a dynamic salinity gradient. Ecosystems were representative of freshwater marl prairies, brackish marsh ecotones, and saline scrub mangrove forests. In the southeastern Everglades, the magnitude of environmental change was greatest along the coast, where mangrove scrub forests exhibited a greater capacity to maintain CO2 uptake with changing conditions.
