Data from: Decreased precipitation predictability negatively affects population growth through differences in adult survival

Global climate change is leading to decreased climatic predictability. Theoretical work indicates that changes in the climate's intrinsic predictability will affect population dynamics and extinction, but experimental evidence is scarce. Here, we experimentally tested whether differences in intrinsic precipitation predictability affect population dynamics of the European common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) by simulating more (MP) and less predictable (LP) precipitation in 12 semi-natural populations over 3 years and measuring different vital rates. A seasonal age-structured matrix model was parametrized to assess treatment effects on vital rates and asymptotic population growth (λ). There was a non-significant trend for survival being higher in MP than LP precipitation, and no differences existed in reproductive rates. Small non-significant survival differences in adults explained changes in λ and survival differences among age-classes were in line with predictions from cohort resonance. As a result, λ was significantly higher in MP than LP. This experimentally shows that small effects have major consequences on λ, that forecasted decreases in intrinsic precipitation predictability are likely to exacerbate the current rate of population decline and extinction, and that stage-structured matrix models are required to unravel the aftermath of climate change.

PBN-PVT projections modulate negative affective states in mice

<p><span>Long-lasting negative affections dampen enthusiasm for life, and dealing with negative affective states is essential for individual survival. The parabrachial nucleus (PBN) and thalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVT) are critical for modulating affective states in mice. However, the functional roles of PBN-PVT projections in modulating affective states remain elusive. Here, we show that PBN neurons send dense projection fibers to the PVT and form direct excitatory synapses with PVT neurons. Activation of the PBN-PVT </span><span>pathway</span><span> induces robust behaviors associated with negative affective states without affecting nociceptive behaviors. Inhibition of the PBN-PVT </span><span>pathway </span><span>reduces aversion-like and fear-like behaviors. Furthermore, the PVT neurons innervated by the PBN are activated by aversive stimulation, and activation of PBN-PVT projections enhances the neuronal activity of PVT neurons in response to the aversive stimulus. Consistently, activation of PVT neurons that received PBN-PVT projections induces anxiety-like behaviors. Thus, our study indicates that PBN-PVT projections modulate negative affective states in mice.</span></p>

Removal of gut symbiotic bacteria negatively affects life history traits of the shield bug, Graphosoma lineatum

<p><span>Bacterial Symbionts play an important biological role in their host. <i>G. lineatum</i> harbor bacterial symbiont in the enclosed crypts of the midgut. It seems that the bacterial symbiont play important role in the insect. Therefore, in this study, the role of bacterial symbiont in the shield bug, <i>Graphosoma lineatum</i> (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae) was investigated. To do this symbiont elimination was performed using surface sterilization of the eggs. Then, we utilized <span>age-stage, two-sex life table analysis</span> to confirm the biological importance of bacterial symbiont in <i>G. lineatum</i>. According to our results symbiont removal had a significantly negative effect on the biology of the insect. These results clearly indicate this symbiont is essential for normal growth and reproduction.</span></p>

Data from: Novel nectar robbing negatively affects reproduction in Digitalis purpurea

<p>With many plant-pollinator interactions undergoing change as species' distributions shift, we require a better understanding of how the addition of new interacting partners can affect plant reproduction. One such group of floral visitors, nectar robbers, can deplete plants of nectar rewards without contributing to pollination. The addition of nectar robbing to the floral visitor assemblage could therefore have costs to the plant´s reproductive output. We focus on a recent plant colonist, <i>Digitalis purpurea</i>, a plant that in its native range is rarely robbed, but experiences intense nectar robbing in areas it has been introduced to. Here, we test the costs to reproduction following experimental nectar robbing. To identify any changes in the behaviour of the principal pollinators in response to nectar robbing, we measured visitation rates, visit duration, proportion of flowers visited and rate of rejection of inflorescences. To find the effects of robbing on fitness, we used proxies for female and male components of reproductive output, by measuring the seeds produced per fruit and the pollen export respectively. Nectar robbing significantly reduced the rate of visitation and lengths of visits by bumblebees. Additionally, bumblebees visited a lower proportion of flowers on an inflorescence that had robbed flowers. We found that flowers in the robbed treatment produced significantly fewer seeds per fruit on average but did not export fewer pollen grains. Our finding that robbing leads to reduced seed production could be due to fewer and shorter visits to flowers leading to less effective pollination. We discuss the potential consequences of new pollinator environments, such as exposure to nectar robbing, for plant reproduction.</p>
