Network topology and patch connectivity affect dynamics in experimental and model metapopulations

Biological populations are rarely isolated in space and instead interact with others via dispersal in metapopulations. Theory predicts that network connectivity patterns can have critical effects on network robustness, as certain topologies, such as scale-free networks, are more tolerant to disturbances than other patterns. However, at present, experimental evidence of how these topologies affect population dynamics in a metapopulation framework is lacking. We used experimental metapopulations of the aquatic protist Paramecium tetraurelia to determine how network topology influences occupation patterns. We created metapopulations engineered to be comparable in linkage density, but differing in their degree distribution. We compared random networks to scale-free networks by evaluating local population occupancy and abundance throughout 18-30 protist generations. In parallel, we used simulations to explore differences in patch occupation patterns among topologies. Under one scenario, random metapopulations of P. tetraurelia reached higher abundance and higher occupancy (proportion of occupied patches) compared to scale-free systems in both experimental and simulated systems, while in the other both types of metapopulations performed similarly. Increasing patch degree (i.e., number of connections per patch) reduced the probability of extinction of local populations in both types of networks. We suggest the interaction between colonization/extinction rates and network topology alters the likelihood of rescue effects which results in differential patterns of occupancy and abundance in metapopulations.

Data from: Modeling of kidney hemodynamics: probability-based topology of an arterial network
Through regulation of the extracellular fluid volume, the kidneys provide important long-term regulation of blood pressure. At the level of the individual functional unit (the nephron), pressure and flow control involves two different mechanisms that both produce oscillations. The nephrons are arranged in a complex branching structure that delivers blood to each nephron and, at the same time, provides a basis for an interaction between adjacent nephrons. The functional consequences of this interaction are not understood, and at present it is not possible to address this question experimentally. We provide experimental data and a new modeling approach to clarify this problem. To resolve details of microvascular structure, we collected 3D data from more than 150 afferent arterioles in an optically cleared rat kidney. Using these results together with published micro-computed tomography (μCT) data we develop an algorithm for generating the renal arterial network. We then introduce a mathematical model describing blood flow dynamics and nephron to nephron interaction in the network. The model includes an implementation of electrical signal propagation along a vascular wall. Simulation results show that the renal arterial architecture plays an important role in maintaining adequate pressure levels and the self-sustained dynamics of nephrons.
Evolving geometries, topologies, and apertures in fracture networks: Quantitative insights from lattice modeling

Fracture networks are crucial in controlling rock mass permeability. Some of the important features of the fracture networks like the density, interconnectivity, spatial distribution, and fracture apertures determine the success of the subsurface operations. Fracture networks can be studied with analogue studies, physical experiments, and numerical modeling. In this study, we analyse the evolution of a two-dimensional fracture network under gravitational and shear loads using the lattice modeling capabilities of the microstructural modeling environment “Elle”. The simulation cases include varying gravitational loads and Young’s moduli of the formations. The topological progression of the modeled fracture network from isolated to interconnected nodes depicts a realistic network evolution process. The study shows that the rock stiffness exhibits a direct correlation with the number of fractures influencing the average aperture size of the network. A higher gravity load resulted in the development of a sparse fracture network. Stiffer rock models also showed an early onset of fracturing.

Reference Packet Optical Network Topology for Edge to Core Transport

In this paper, we present a reference multi-layer hierarchical network topology that spans from access to core networks, specifically designed to meet the demands of next-generation 6G communication systems. This topology, inspired by the actual network deployments of Telefónica in medium-sized countries in Europe and America, integrates both IP and optical (DWDM) layers to provide a comprehensive framework for network design, optimization, and analysis. Our primary contribution is the development of an open-source benchmarking network, accessible to both researchers and industry professionals. This resource aims to facilitate the study and advancement of integrated IP and optical networks, addressing key challenges such as traffic aggregation, latency reduction, cost efficiency, and support for advanced
applications. We provide guidelines for utilizing this benchmark network, enabling users to evaluate and enhance their solutions for AI-driven network management, ultra-reliable low-latency communication, enhanced mobile broadband, and massive machine-type communication. By sharing this detailed and practical benchmarking network, we seek to foster innovation and collaboration within the optical network community, driving forward the capabilities and performance of future communication networks.
