The Ontario Lake and River Routing Product Version 2 (OLRRP V2)

The Ontario Lake and River Routing Product (OLRRP) is a high-resolution, vector-based lake-river routing GIS product over the Province of Ontario. The OLRRP supplies network topology and various subbasin, channel, and lake attributes required for hydrological modeling. Version 2 of OLRRP is an enhancement relative to Version 1 (here).

Key upgrades in OLRRP V2 include using the Provincial Digital Elevation Model to derive elevation related attributes, almost 500 non-HYDAT hydrometric stations and over 200 hydropower generating station locations are now defined as Points of Interest (POI), an improved POI snapping procedure improves the inclusion rate and accuracy of POI on the lake and river networks, and an enhanced suite of cloud-based Python GIS post-processing tools (BasinMaker V3.1) are now available for users to access and customize their case study routing networks.

The OLRRP V2 connects 245,576 subbasins (average area 4.3 km²) and 82,928 lakes (surface areas ranging from 0.1 km² to 4,506 km²) and assigns 4033 POI to these subbasins and lakes. The agreement between ECCC HYDAT reported drainage areas (998 in total) and the corresponding computed drainage areas is excellent. For 74% of comparisons, drainage areas show less than 2% difference while in only 4% of these comparisons, the absolute drainage area difference exceeds 10%. The OLRRPv2 provides detailed routing networks for any of the above lakes/subbasins/POIs and thus supports semi-distributed hydrological modeling, vector-based routing only modeling and other water resources analyses requiring the connectivity of lakes and rivers in Ontario.

The OLRRP V2 Homepage for online map viewing and download is here.

The BasinMaker V3.1 Post-Processing Tools available on Google Colab can be found here.

In this repository, three different files are attached:

(1) Nine folders for OLRRP V2 in the nine drainage regions in Ontario (i.e., 'NW', 'FNC1', 'FNC2', 'FNE', 'FNW', 'NC', 'NE', 'SE', and 'SW'). Too many to count: Using orthophotography to census an unharvested beaver (Castor canadensis) population in Ontario

Various field methods exist to monitor wildlife populations and estimate trends in their distribution and abundance. For American beaver (Castor canadensis), aerial surveys provide a means to obtain abundance data over large areas and typically involve observers searching watercourses and shorelines for active beaver presence. Here, we describe a systematic aerial photo census we designed and executed in autumn to quantify annual beaver abundance on the 184 km2 Michipicoten Island, Ontario from 2015–2019. Aerial photos were stitched together into orthophoto mosaics after each census and visually searched for beaver food caches, with each food cache representing an independent beaver colony. Our methods revealed that beaver colony abundance declined substantially from a peak of 6.1 colonies/km2 in 2015, the highest reported across North America, to 0.4 colonies/km2 in 2018. Beaver abundance remained low through 2019. Though photographing the entire isolated study area required relatively little time and effort, even when beaver density was very high, post-census processing work was time-consuming. Lessons learned will improve the efficiencies of our future censuses and aid other researchers. Our method is advantageous over traditional aerial wildlife surveys in that it provides a digital and visual record that can be used for additional analyses.

Brook trout occupancy in the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone, Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry compiled brook trout presence and absence data for rivers and streams within the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone of Ontario. Data from hundreds of electrofished sites were grouped into two time periods, past (1970-1980) and recent (2000-2010), to quantify the change in brook trout occupancy in streams of the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone in Ontario at different spatial scales. The data include information for five spatial scales: 1) tertiary watersheds; 2) quaternary watersheds; 3) the well-sampled Credit River-Sixteen Mile Creek tertiary watershed; and, 4) sites within 50 m of each other were sampled in both the past (1970-1980) and recent (2000-2010) periods, and 5) at each spatial scale brook trout occupancy along the longitudinal axes of the rivers was assessed using Strahler stream order. This data set will be cited in a manuscript that quantifies the declines in brook trout occupancy in rivers and streams of southern Ontario.

Data to accompany from: Effects of neonicotinoid seed treatments on wildbee populations and soybean and corn fields in eastern Ontario

Neonicotinoid-coated corn and soybean seeds are a common crop in Canada and the US. A growing body of research is demonstrating that, through various exposure routes, neonicotinoids can impact a suite of non-target organisms including beneficial insects such as bees. However, to date, only a few studies have examined the effects of neonicotinoids in field settings. We assessed the relationship between agricultural crop soil neonicotinoid levels and wild bee abundance and diversity at 16 agricultural sites representing different soil neonicotinoid levels. We detected clothianidin at 11 sites, thiamethoxam at three sites; imidacloprid was not detected. Hedgerow and crop soils were consistent in terms of where clothianidin was detected; thiamethoxan was not detected in hedgerow soils. Based on model outcomes, fields with higher levels of soil neonicotinoids exhibited significantly lower wild bee abundance and diversity than those with low or no neonicotinoids detected. Crop soil neonicotinoid level, hedgerow floral resource abundance and crop type were consistent predictors of bee abundance across models; only neonicotinoid level and crop type were significant predictors of diversity. Our results are consistent with recent findings in the midwestern US, and underscore the potential risk of soil neonicotinoids to wild bee populations across regions and crop systems.
