Data from: Refuge or predation risk? Alternate ways to perceive hiker disturbance based on maternal state of female caribou
Human presence in natural environments is often a source of stress that is perceived by large ungulates as an increased risk of predation. Alternatively, disturbance induced by hikers creates a relatively predator-free space that may serve as a refuge. We measured the behavioral responses of female caribou to disturbance associated with the presence of hikers during summer in the Gaspésie National Park. We used those data to determine whether caribou responded negatively to human activity (i.e., the predation risk hypothesis) or whether human activity resulted in a decrease in the magnitude of perceived risk (i.e., the refuge hypothesis). Female caribou with a calf spent nearly half of their time feeding, regardless of the presence of a trail or the number of hikers. They also decreased their vigilance near trails when the number of hikers increased. Conversely, lone females fed less frequently and almost doubled the time invested in vigilance under the same circumstances. However, both groups of females moved away from trails during the day, especially in the presence of hikers. We demonstrated that risk avoidance was specific to the maternal state of the individual. Lactating females accommodated the presence of hikers to increase time spent foraging and nutritional intake, providing support for the refuge hypothesis. Alternatively, lone females with lower energetic requirements and no maternal investment in a vulnerable calf appeared less tolerant to risk, consistent with the predation risk hypothesis. Synthesis and applications: Hikers influenced the vigilance–feeding trade-off in caribou, underlining the importance of appropriate management of linear structures and human activities, especially across the critical habitat of endangered species. Even if some individuals seemed to benefit from human presence, this behavioral adaptation was not sufficient to reduce annual calf mortality associated with predation.
Data from: American black bears perceive the risks of crossing roads
Roadways may negatively impact wildlife species through vehicular-related mortality and spatial displacement or obstruction. Here we investigated physiological responses, which provide insights into the animal's perception of its environment. We deployed GPS-collars in combination with cardiac biologgers on American black bears (Ursus americanus; 18 bear-years) in areas with differing road densities across Minnesota, USA. We tested whether bears exhibited acute stress responses, as defined by significant increases in heart rate (HR), associated with road crossings. Maximum HR between successive telemetry locations were, on average, 13 bpm higher when bears were known to cross a road. They crossed a road, on average, once per day. Different demographic groups (males, females with and without cubs) responded similarly. We found stronger HR responses when crossing high-traffic roads relative to low-traffic in half of the bear-year combinations we sampled. Bears crossed high-traffic roads mainly at night, but low traffic roads during daylight. Bear HRs first became elevated when 73−183 meters away from roadways. Our findings suggest that roadways act as an acute stressor, but the magnitude of the stress response appears to be mild. Elevated HRs may reflect an increased vigilance and recognition of threat when preparing to cross a road. Bears' recognition and alertness to human-related threats is adaptive for living in human-altered landscapes.
Data for: Perceived risk structures the space use of competing carnivores
<p>Competition structures ecological communities. In carnivorans, competitive interactions are disproportionately costly to subordinate carnivores who must account for risk of interspecific killing when foraging. Accordingly, missed opportunity costs for meso-carnivores imposed by risk can benefit the smallest-bodied competitors. However, the extent to which the risk perpetuates into spatial partitioning in hierarchically structured communities remains unknown. To determine how risk-avoidance behaviors shape the space-use of carnivore communities, we studied a simple community of carnivores in northern Patagonia, Argentina: pumas (<i>Puma concolor</i>; an apex carnivore), culpeo foxes (<i>Lycalopex culpaeus</i>; a meso-carnivore), and chilla foxes (<i>Lycalopex griseus</i>; a small carnivore). We used multi-species occupancy models to quantify the space use within the carnivore community and giving-up densities to understand the behaviors that structure space use. Notably, we applied an analytical framework that tests whether actual or perceived risk of predation most strongly influences the space use of subordinate carnivores while accounting for their foraging and vigilance behaviors. We found that there was a dominance hierarchy from the apex carnivore through the meso-carnivore to the subordinate small carnivore, which was reflected in space. Although both meso- and small carnivores exhibited similar predator avoidance behavioral responses to apex carnivores, the habitat associations of apex carnivores only altered meso-carnivore space use. The biases in risk management we observed for meso-carnivores likely translates into stable co-existence of this community of competing carnivores. We believe our analytical framework can be extended to other communities to quantify the spatial-behavioral tradeoffs of risk.</p>

Perceived family functioning profile in adolescents at clinical high risk for psychosis: rigidity as a possible preventive target
<p><strong>Introduction</strong></p> <p>This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “Perceived family functioning profile in adolescents at Clinical High-Risk for Psychosis: rigidity as a possible preventive target”, currently under submission.</p> <p>In this paper, we reported sociodemographic characteristics, family history of any DSM-5 psychiatric disorder, personal history of any DSM-5 psychiatric disorder, psychopathological assessment, and level of functioning. We aimed at investigating the role of family functioning for APS adolescents compared to adolescents suffering from early onset psychosis and with other psychiatric disorders.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong></p> <p>Participants were then divided into three groups: 1) adolescents with established Early Onset Psychosis (EOP), 2) adolescents meeting DSM-5 Attenuated psychotic Syndrome (APS) criteria and the attenuated psychotic symptoms subgroup of the Clinical High Risk for Psychosis (CHR-P), 3) adolescents with other DSM-5 psychiatric disorders who did not meet APS/EOP criteria.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>Our results suggest that family functioning has a central role and could represent a worthwhile target of intervention for adolescents at CHR-P, leading the way to new preventive approaches.</p>
