Process data for development of a digital material shadow for the press hardening route of medium manganese steel
<p>Press-hardened ultra-high strength steel parts are widely used in the automotive sector for their lightweight and safety advantages. Medium-Manganese Steels (MMnS) are being explored as an alternative to boron-manganese steels due to their high strength and ductility after quenching, achieved at lower annealing temperatures thus reducing energy usage and carbon emissions. However, industrial adoption of MMnS is hindered by challenging processing requirements, e.g. in cold-rolling and press hardening. To expedite and improve the process development, data-driven decisions based on process parameters hold promise. Establishing a link between process data and the final produced part necessitates the development of a framework for a Digital Material Shadow (DMS). This paper investigates the development of a DMS framework for the cold rolling and press hardening process chain. In conjunction with conventional data acquisition methods employed for cold rolling, novel data acquisition techniques are introduced specifically tailored for press hardening, ensuring the comprehensive availability of relevant data. Moreover, a data pipeline is implemented to enable automatic processing, visualization, and analysis of process data. To facilitate seamless data linkage across processes in the DMS, an ID-system is introduced. Finally, the developed framework’s validity is demonstrated by creating a DMS for press-hardened MMnS parts, showcasing its potential for practical applications.</p>

MacLeod, kirstyjmacleod@gmail.com.</p> <p>Abstract: Reproduction is a critical part of an animal’s life history, but one which incurs significant costs to survival and future reproductive potential. These physiological consequences are likely to be influenced by context – for example, if an individual is subject to environmental stressors, physiological and behavioral changes associated with reproduction may be altered. Glucocorticoids, hormones produced as part of the physiological response to stressors, may alter how reproduction affects female physiology and behavior, and therefore the outcomes of reproductive trade-offs. Glucocorticoids prioritize immediate survival over reproduction, for example through changes in immune function, metabolic rate, and foraging, which may reduce energy expenditure or increase energy gain. However, we previously found that female eastern fence lizards (<em>Sceloporus undulatus</em>) experiencing elevated glucocorticoid levels during gestation were nevertheless able to maintain reproductive output and body condition. Here we investigate compensatory mechanisms by which eastern fence lizard females may maintain reproduction under experimental increases in a glucocorticoid, corticosterone (CORT). We found that, although CORT-treated females had similar immune function and behavior, they had reduced metabolic rates 3-5 days post-parturition compared to control females. Given that CORT-treated females spent a similar time basking and had equal food intake compared to control females, we suggest that the reduced metabolic rate is a mechanism by which CORT-treated females maintain their energy balance and reduce the energetic costs of gestation during periods of stress. This study suggests that physiological responses to reproduction may be context-dependent and could act to minimize costs of reproduction in situations where CORT is elevated (such as during periods of environmental stress). </p>
Press versus pulse nutrient supply and species interactions mediate growth of coral reef macroalgae
<p>Globally, ecosystems are experiencing dramatic alterations in the supply of resources, including nutrients. How the temporal regime (press versus pulse), independent of total resource supply, affects growth and species interactions of primary producers remains unexplored. Coral reefs experience anthropogenic modifications to nutrient regimes, making it critical to understand impacts on primary producers, such as macroalgae. In mesocosms, we examined how three macroalgae respond to the temporal pattern in nutrient regime (ambient, press, pulse) and species interactions (alone, pairwise, or all together) in terms of their individual growth and assemblage productivity. We found nutrient regime and species interactions influenced individual growth and total assemblage productivity. Press regimes promoted the highest productivity of total assemblages. We observed species interactions ranging from competitive to facilitative varied between macroalgal species and nutrient regimes. Ours is the first study to demonstrate the temporal regime of nutrient delivery, independent of total nutrient supply, strongly impacts the productivity of species assemblages, the nature and outcome of species interactions, and the relative growth rates of individual producer species. As nutrient regimes increasingly fluctuate for coastal marine ecosystems in the Anthropocene, our findings imply macroalgal community composition may also fluctuate. More broadly, our study highlights the importance of assessing primary producer species' responses to varying nutrient regimes to understand factors structuring their communities.</p>

Neonatal 3T PRESS Basis Sets (MARBLE)
<p>Neonatal 3T basis sets used for the multi-site MARBLE study, simulated using Vespa. These correspond to the vendor-provided PRESS sequences used on Siemens, Philips and GE scanners, as described in Lally PJ, Montaldo P et al. The clinical impact of high-profile animal-based research reported in the UK national press: a detailed discussion of articles from 1995, and full search results from the Nexis database
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Objectives</b>: We evaluated animal-based biomedical 'breakthroughs' reported in the UK national press in 1995 (25 years prior to the conclusion of this study). Based on evidence of over-speculative reporting of biomedical research in other areas (e.g. press releases and scientific papers), we specifically examined animal research in the media, asking, "In a given year, what proportion of animal research 'breakthroughs' published in the UK national press had translated, more than 20 years later, to approved interventions?"</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Methods</b>: We searched the Nexis media database (LexisNexis.com) for animal-based biomedical reports in the UK national press. The only restrictions were that the intervention should be specific, such as a named drug, gene, biomedical pathway, to facilitate follow-up, and that there should be claims of some clinical promise. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Main Outcome Measures</b>: Were any interventions approved for human use? Data from: Nutrient presses and pulses differentially impact plants, herbivores, detritivores and their natural enemies
Anthropogenic nutrient inputs into native ecosystems cause fluctuations in resources that normally limit plant growth, which has important consequences for associated food webs. Such inputs from agricultural and urban habitats into nearby natural systems are increasing globally and can be highly variable, spanning the range from sporadic to continuous. Despite the global increase in anthropogenically-derived nutrient inputs into native ecosystems, the consequences of variation in subsidy duration on native plants and their associated food webs are poorly known. Specifically, while some studies have examined the effects of nutrient subsidies on native ecosystems for a single year (a nutrient pulse), repeated introductions of nutrients across multiple years (a nutrient press) better reflect the persistent nature of anthropogenic nutrient enrichment. We therefore contrasted the effects of a one-year nutrient pulse with a four-year nutrient press on arthropod consumers in two salt marshes. Salt marshes represent an ideal system to address the differential impacts of nutrient pulses and presses on ecosystem and community dynamics because human development and other anthropogenic activities lead to recurrent introductions of nutrients into these natural systems. We found that plant biomass and %N as well as arthropod density fell after the nutrient pulse ended but remained elevated throughout the nutrient press. Notably, higher trophic levels responded more strongly than lower trophic levels to fertilization, and the predator/prey ratio increased each year of the nutrient press, demonstrating that food web responses to anthropogenic nutrient enrichment can take years to fully manifest themselves. Vegetation at the two marshes also exhibited an apparent tradeoff between increasing %N and biomass in response to fertilization. Our research emphasizes the need for long-term, spatially diverse studies of nutrient enrichment in order to understand how variation in the duration of anthropogenic nutrient subsidies affects native ecosystems.

Analysis of Translation Techniques in the English Translations of Press Releases
<p>This article is aimed at identifying, describing and explaining the types of translation techniques used in translating press releases from French into English published on the official websites of some ministries of Cameroon. These include the areas of public exams (Ministry of Public Service and Administrative Reforms), education (Ministries of Secondary and Higher Education), transport (Ministry of Sports), health (Ministry of Public Health), economy (Ministry of Finance), and public relations (Ministry of External Relations). The Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) approach by Gideon Toury, the communication and skopos theories of translation were used to analyse 50 (fifty) excerpts of French press releases which have been translated into English. The findings show that the most used translation technique in the English translation of press releases was Modulation, followed by Amplification. However, 11 translation techniques are identified in the English translations of press releases.</p>
