Noise Reduction by NBS in Valladolid city

<p>Noise pollution by traffic, construction works, etc. is a common city problem. Nuisance from noise is detrimental to neighbourhood liveability, living comfort and work environments, and can increase risk of serious health problems such as hearing loss and cardiovascular disease.</p> <p>Urban ecosystems provide noise reduction services by serving as a natural sound buffer. Vegetation provides both a direct and an indirect barrier to environmental noise. Starting with its direct functions, green belts attenuate noise by absorption, dispersal, and destructive interference of sound waves, though sound levels can intensify locally if measured right below tree crowns. Indirect noise reduction effects are generated by lessened wind speeds and the absorptive capacity of pervious soils. UGS also proved to offer noise reducing services via psychological effects: just observing the presence of a green wall can lead people to perceive less noise nuisance or alter the perception of noise as sounds such as flowing water, bird singing, and leaves rustling in the wind mask disturbing background noise.</p> <p>On the other hand, the methodology proposed for this KPI is based and uses the methodology and tools proposed by the European Commission Working Group Assessment of Exposure to Noise (WG-AEN).</p> <p>The Environmental Noise Directive (END) requires two main indicators to be applied in the assessment and management of environmental noise. The first indicator (Lden) is the noise level for the day, evening and night periods and is designed to measure &lsquo;annoyance&rsquo;. The END defines an Lden threshold of 55 dB. The second indicator (Lnight) is the noise level for night-time periods and is designed to assess sleep disturbance. The END defines an Lnight threshold of 50 dB. Member States must report the numbers of people who are exposed to noise levels above both thresholds for each noise source (e.g. roads, railways, airports, industry).</p>

Measurements of ethylene production (using the acetylene reduction assay) as a proxy for nitrogen fixation of epiphytes on seagrass in West Falmouth Harbor during July from 2005 through 2019.

West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000’s. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have measured nitrogen fixation rates of seagrass-associated epiphytes using the acetylene reduction technique. Samples were taken annually in July at two sites, one in the well-flushed outer basin (OH) and one in the inner basin closer to the dominant groundwater N source (Snug Harbor, SH). Additional data are presented in 2019 at 18 sites spatially distributed through the seagrass bed to assess spatial heterogeneity. Individual replicate data are presented. These data are in support of a manuscript submitted to the journal Biogeochemistry by Marino et al, submitted for publication (12/2022).

Acetylene reduction and 15N2 uptake rates for Alnus tenuifolia and Alnus crispa in six different successional habitats

This study sought to determine the conversion factor between acetylene reduction and N-fixation rates by root nodules excised from naturally-occurring Alnus tenuifolia and Alnus crispa plants in 18 sites in the BNZ-LTER. N-fixation rate was measured via uptake of 15N2 by excised nodule tissue. Sites were chosen to represent three replicates of early, mid, and late successional habitats on the Tanana River floodplain and in surrounding upland areas. A. tenuifolia was sampled in floodplain sites, and A. crispa in uplands. Parameters measured: acetylene reduction rate, N2 fixation rate, ratio of acetylene reduced to N2 fixed, soil temperature, leaf del 15N, and specific leaf weight. Most of the fixed nitrogen (N) that enters the N cycle in Alaskan forests is fixed biologically by alder (Alnus spp.) in symbiosis with the N-fixing bacterial genus Frankia. Estimates of gross N inputs resulting from this process ultimately rely on accurate measurement of N-fixation by nodule tissue. These rates are typically estimated by measuring rates of acetylene reduction by nodule tissue, then using an empirically determined conversion factor to obtain the corresponding N fixation rate. The purposes of this study were to determine: 1) the conversion factor(s) for Alnus tenuifolia and Alnus crispa in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, and 2) whether the conversion factor varied between plants occurring in different successional habitats.

Forest restoration and fuels reduction work: Different pathways for achieving success in the Sierra Nevada

Fire suppression and past selective logging of large trees have fundamentally changed frequent-fire adapted forests in California. The culmination of these changes produced forests that are vulnerable to catastrophic change by wildfire, drought, and bark beetles, with climate change exacerbating this vulnerability. Management options available to address this problem include mechanical treatments (Mech), prescribed fire (Fire), or combinations of these treatments (Mech + Fire). We quantify changes in forest structure and composition, fuel accumulation, modeled fire behavior, inter-tree competition, and economics from a 20-year forest restoration study in the northern Sierra Nevada. All three active treatments (Fire, Mech, Mech + Fire) produced forest conditions that were much more resistant to wildfire than the untreated control. The treatments that included prescribed fire (Fire, Mech + Fire) produced the lowest surface and duff fuel loads and the lowest modeled fire hazards. Mech produced low fire hazards beginning 7-years after the initial treatment and Mech + Fire had lower tree growth than controls. The only treatment that produced inter-tree competition similar to historical California mixed-conifer forests was Mech + Fire, indicating that stands under this treatment would likely be more resilient to enhanced forest stressors. While Fire reduced modeled fire hazard and reintroduced a fundamental ecosystem process, it was done at a net cost to the landowner. Using Mech that included mastication and commercial thinning resulted in positive revenues and was also relatively strong as an investment in reducing modeled fire hazard. The Mech + Fire treatment represents a compromise between the desire to sustain financial feasibility and the desire to reintroduce fire. One key component to long-term forest conservation will be continued treatments to maintain or improve the conditions from forest restoration. Many Indigenous people speak of 'active stewardship' as one of the key principles in land management and this aligns well with the need for increased restoration in western US forests. If we do not use the knowledge from 20+ years of forest research and the much longer tradition of Indigenous cultural practices and knowledge, frequent-fire forests will continue to be degraded and lost.
