IronRefs database of bibliographic data on remediation of contaminated environmental materials using zerovalent metals such as iron (ZVI)
<p>Database of bibliographic data for publications (journal articles, reports, patents, presentation abstracts, etc.) on the use of zerovalent metals (ZVMs)—especially zerovalent iron (ZVI)—for remediation or treatment of contaminated environmental materials (mainly groundwater, but also wastewater, soil, and sediment).</p> <p>The data were compiled and curated between 1996 and 2011 by members of the research group of Professor Paul G. Tratnyek at the Oregon Graduate Institute in Beaverton, Oregon, USA. At the beginning, the field was very small and most new work appeared first in gray-literature, so manual curation of the database made it a uniquely-valuable resource for the community.</p> <p>The original list of references was replaced with a searchable online database in 1998, which was named the “IronRefs” database and made available to all at <a href="http://cgr.ebs.ogi.edu/ironrefs/">http://cgr.ebs.ogi.edu/ironrefs/</a>. The database was updated periodically until 2011, by which time the field had grown so large that it was no longer practical to keep up with all of the new publications.</p> <p>The early development and impact of the IronRefs database was documented when it reached 500 records (Tratnyek, 2002) and when it reached 1000 records (Schneider et al., 2008). The former was published as an article in Groundwater Monitoring and Remediation (DOI: 10.1111/j.1745-6592.2002.tb00757.x) and the latter was given as a poster at the 6th International Conference on Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds, Monterey, CA (PDF included here).</p> <p>In 2019, the server containing IronRefs was retired, so this unique resource became unavailable. In place of IronRefs, we provide here all of the data (2000+ records) in two tagged-field formats that are compatible with most bibliographic data management software: an EndNote compressed library (.enlx) and an RIS file (.ris). We also exported the data to a tab-delimited text file and provide that in .csv and .txt formats.</p> <p>Note that no new records were added to the IronRefs database after about mid-2011, so the value of the dataset provided here is largely historical. There are many newer publications that are relevant, and the literature on this topic continues to grow rapidly as of 2020.</p>

Blasting Quarry Operations: Adverse And Cumulative Effects, Lawsuits And Complaints, And Suggested Remedies
<p>Breaking rock for road construction, installation of infrastructure or for extraction typically involves detonation of explosives. Any time explosives are detonated there are undesirable impacts on the environment and its inhabitants, which are always more severe in populated areas of significant human and non-human activity. The primary focus of this paper is on the impact that blasting quarry operations have on the environment and its inhabitants. A number of civil cases, investigations, published articles and press releases documenting the adverse and cumulative effects of blasting rock are presented, discussed and analyzed. The extensive number of documented cases and media reports of the adverse and cumulative effects of blasting quarry operations on the environment and its inhabitants shed light on the gas lighting strategy employed by the aggregate industry and their explosives engineers to alter the public’s perception of reality by consistently and repeatedly claiming that blasting within regulatory limits cannot cause structural damage and that the vibrations felt from blasting are no more than a minor inconvenience. Gas lighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which the abusers, in this case the aggregate industry and its explosives engineers, attempt to sow self-doubt and confusion in the minds of their victims, and to mislead approval authorities and cause them to question their own judgment and intuition from a practical non-theoretical perspective. The research conducted supports reducing Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) to a maximum of 2 mm per second measured along the entire perimeter of a blasting quarry operation, combined with a permanent onsite 500-metre setback and offsite minimum separation distance of 1,000 metres from incompatible land uses to minimize damage from structural response to ground vibrations and airblast (concussion), and to eliminate or reduce substantially lawsuits and complaints from residents exposed to the adverse impacts of blasting. None of the <span>adverse effects </span>prohibited under the <span>Ontario </span>Environmental Protection Act are permitted to impact public or private third-party properties beyond the boundary of an existing or proposed blasting or non-blasting quarry operation.</p>

Hydrothermal carbonization of vegetable-tanned leather shavings (HTC-VTS) for environmental remediation: optimization of process conditions
<p><span>Herein, the response surface methodology (RSM) has been used to study simultaneously the effects of carbonization temperature, residence time, and moisture content on the activated hydrochar preparation-based vegetable-tanned leather shavings (VTS) using hydrothermal carbonization method (HTC). Owing to the desirability chosen, three responses were analysed, namely: the hydrochar yield, iodine, and methylene blue numbers. The analysis of experimental results revealed that the hydrochar yield was decreased with an increase in carbonization temperature which led to micropores formation inside the hydrochar network. The optimal preparation conditions retained were: 83.10%, 390.44 mg/g, and 259.63 mg/g for the hydrochar yield, iodine, and methylene blue number respectively. The hydrochar micrograph showed the presence of external pores, whereas the FTIR analysis recorded the presence of acidic functional groups found on hydrochar surface. The findings revealed that the VTS is a good precursor for the hydrochar preparation useful in the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants in aqueous media. </span></p>
