Sketch planning tool for sustainable and resilient urban goods distribution
<p>The urban goods distribution system is a critical component of modern society. However, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in this system, as it struggled to cope with an unforeseen surge in demand. This crisis highlighted the urgent necessity of developing a resilient and sustainable urban goods distribution system capable of efficiently recovering from high-severity disruptions. To address this challenge, our research team previously developed a novel analytical model, the Robustness, Redundancy, Resourcefulness, and Rapidity - Last-Mile Distribution - Resilience Triangle (R4-LMD-RT) framework. In line with the previous work, this work aims to create a sketch-planning tool tailored for local jurisdictions, based on the R4-LMD-RT model. This tool assists in the strategic planning of urban goods distribution systems, identifying land use requirements and proposing sustainable and resilient strategies, such as urban consolidation, micro-hubs, alternative delivery points, and zero-emission vehicles. As part of a case study, the authors validate the effectiveness of this planning tool by applying it to the city of Los Angeles for a COVID-19-like disruption. The outcome of this research paves the way for more sustainable and resilient urban goods distribution systems in the post-pandemic world.</p>
Fire code review sketch dataset
<p>Automatic assessments of building plans are uncommon in the early design stages, especially when schematic sketches are in raster format. Existing design evaluation tools, such as fire code reviewers, which are typically used in the late design stage, primarily evaluate vector format images that contain complete building information. These tools use conditional shape-embedding techniques to analyze the vector images. However, there are limitations to identifying and evaluating drawings through vector-shape relationships. Our research aimed to develop tools that can automatically assess schematic sketches in raster format to overcome the limitations of existing tools. We integrated a conditional shape-embedding tool, named Shape Machine, to assess vector images, with machine learning techniques, namely a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), to assess raster sketches. This integration enables the evaluation of fire evacuation sketches in the early stages of the design process, thereby improving design efficiency and reducing costs. Moreover, in the future, this integration could allow the evaluation of designs in multiple image formats.</p>

Lincoln Memorial Sketch Model
American sculptor Daniel Chester French was chosen to create the statue that would be the centerpiece of the new Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. After consultations with Henry Bacon, the architect and his longtime personal friend, French decided to have the president seated. The first tentative model for the statue was this fast sketch model. Fine details weren't important at this early stage. The sketch model was intended to be a general idea of the possible final statue. This first draft model is interesting as it was eventually mirrored into the final design. The projecting left leg and foot were moved back under the seat while the opposite foot and leg were extended. The clenched and relaxed hands were switched as well. The chair was eventually turned into a smooth monolithic throne. The massive marble statue today unmistakably reflects this first early design. The sketch model can be seen today in the studio at Chesterwood. It sits on the edge of the six-foot model that dominates the room. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
