Sketches and Diagrams in Practice — Supplementary Material

Sketches and diagrams play an important role in the daily work of software developers. In our paper "Sketches and Diagrams in Practice" we present the results of our research on the usage of sketches and diagrams in software engineering practice. We focused especially on their relation to the core elements of a software project, the source code artifacts. Furthermore, we wanted to assess how helpful sketches are for understanding the related source code. We intended to find out if, how, and why sketches and diagrams are archived and are thereby available for future use. Software is created with and for a wide range of stakeholders. Since sketches are often a means for communicating between these stakeholders, we were not only interested in sketches and diagrams created by software developers, but by all software practitioners, including testers, architects, project managers, as well as researchers and consultants. In a survey with 394 software ‘practitioners’, we mainly asked questions about the the last sketch or diagram that they had created. Contrary to our expectations and previous work, the majority of sketches and diagrams contained at least some UML elements. However, most of them were informal. The most common purposes for creating sketches and diagrams were designing, explaining, and understanding, but analyzing requirements was also named often. More than half of the sketches and diagrams were created on analog media like paper or whiteboards and have been revised after creation. Most of them were used for more than a week and were archived. About half of the sketches were rated as helpful to understand the related source code artifact(s) in the future. Our study complements a number of existing studies on the use of sketches and diagrams in software development, which analyzed the above aspects only in parts and often focused on an academic environment, a single company, open source projects, or were limited to a small group of participants.

The questionnaire for the online survey was online from August 28, 2013 until December 31, 2013. Further information on our research design and research questions can be found in the referenced paper. This dataset contains the questionnaire, the data we collected during this survey, and a basic R script that can be used as a starting point for validating our results and further exploring the data. This data set has been reviewed and accepted by the Artifact Evaluation Committee of FSE 2014. Since we assured our participants that their data is handled confidentially, only the quantitative data is directly available here. If you are also interested in the qualitative data from our survey, don’t hesitate to contact the authors.

Supplementary Material - The conservation status of the Cretan Endemic Arthropods under Natura 2000 network

Arthropod decline has been globally and locally documented, yet they are still not sufficiently protected. Crete (Greece), a Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot, is a continental island renowned for its diverse geology, ecosystems and endemicity of flora and fauna, with continuous research on its Arthropod fauna dating back to the 19th century. Here we investigate the conservation status of the Cretan Arthropods using Preliminary Automated Conservation Assessments (PACA) and the overlap of Cretan Arthropod distributions with the Natura 2000 protected areas. Moreover we investigate their endemicity hotspots and propose candidate Key Biodiversity Areas. In order to perform these analyses, we assembled occurrences of the endemic Arthropods in Crete located in the collections of the Natural History Museum of Crete together with literature data. These assessments resulted in 75% of endemic Arthropods as potentially threatened. The hotspots of endemic taxa and the candidate Key Biodiversity Areas are distributed mostly on the mountainous areas where the Natura 2000 protected areas have great coverage. Yet human activities have significant impact even in those areas, while some taxa are not sufficiently covered by Natura 2000. These findings call for countermeasures and conservation actions.

The code is available here https://github.com/savvas-paragkamian/arthropods_assessment_crete and a zipped version of the repository is included here (arthropods_assessment_crete-1.2.0.tar).

Supplementary Material 1 is the Supplementary-material-1.xlsx file which contains the Arthropod occurrences as compiled from the literature and the specimens of the NHMC. In addition all references of the literature are included in a separate sheet.

Supplementary Material 2 1 is the Supplementary-material-2.docx which contains two (2) supplementary figures and two (2) supplementary tables.

The price of safety: Order picking in warehouses with in-house traffic regulations (Supplementary material)

In what follows, you will find the code and results of the paper:

"The price of safety: Order picking in warehouses with in-house traffic regulations" published in IISE Transactions.

List of files:

- Zip file: "Order Picking Problem with in-house traffic regulations" containing C# Code used to generate solutions for all safety policies

- Result.csv containing all generated results

- createPlots.py containing code to generate figures and tables from the paper

The C# code is object-oriented and contains a Main function in the Program.cs file that converts the Example.OPP file with the InstanceReaders to an OPPInstance and uses the Solve function from either the DynamicProgrammic.cs or RuralPostman.cs file to solve the OPPInstance with all the TrafficRegulations as described in the paper.

The Example.OPP defines the Depot location (0: decentral, 1: central), AisleLength, i.e. the number of pick positions within each aisle, and other dimensions of the warehouse. Finally, the items are defined by their picking aisle, shelf, position in the shelf, and region.

The dynamic program (DP) described in the paper is implemented in DynamicProgrammic.cs. A HashSet of DPNode represents each layer of the DP. A DPNode basically consists of components, nodeDegrees, and a value. Depending on the TrafficRegulation the nodeDegrees are either NodeDegreeClassic, i.e. Null, Uneven, or Even, or NodeDegreeInAndOutDifference, i.e. the difference of the in- and out-degree. To construct the solution at the end, the inEdge is also saved for each DPNode and the additional member depotIsConnected ensures that the depot is visited. The DPNodes in the next layer of the DP are created by the functions MakeNextLayerVertical and MakeNextLayerHorizontal by determining all possibleTransitions per node in the current layer and combining them into a newNode. Products are stored with their position on the shelves in the item list within a PickingAisle. All vertical possibleTransitions are determined in a preprocessing step depending on the TrafficRegulations and are saved within the respective PickingAisle. All horizontal possibleTransitions are determined during the DP with specific functions depending on the TrafficRegulation in HorizontalTransition.cs. When the layers are created, the best feasible DPNode per layer is saved and the best one, i.e. the one with the lowest value, is returned at the end.

The paper describes that certain safety policies cannot be solved with the DP. These OPPInstances are solved as a RuralPostman problem (RPP) by generating a Graph that adopts the rectangular structure of the warehouse. Within the Graph, requiredEdges are determined that correspond to PickingAisles containing items. The resulting RPP can be transformed into a traveling salesman problem (TSP) as described by applying an arc-oriented Dijkstra or, in certain cases, to a generalized TSP (GTSP) where one of the two directed edges must be visited. If necessary, the GTSP is transformed to an asymmetric TSP in GTSPInstance and then solved with TSPSolver using LKH-3.exe (Helsgaun 2017, http://webhotel4.ruc.dk/~keld/research/LKH-3/). To use LKH-3.exe, the TSP instance is saved in a TSPLIB format and a parameter file (.par) for LKH and a solution file (.sol) are created in the bin folder. These files are named according to the name specified in the instance.Solve function, where one can also choose to save or delete these files afterward.

For more information on LKH-3 see: Keld Helsgaun: An Extension of the Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun TSP Solver for Constrained Traveling Salesman and Vehicle Routing Problems (Technical Report, Roskilde University, 2017)

Evaluation.py

A Python script that generates figures 8, 9, and 10 and tables 6, 7 and 8 (in csv-format) of the paper by processing data from Results.csv.

It requires Results.csv to be in the same directory as the code.

It also requires the following Python packages:

- matplotlib

- pandas

- seaborn
