Record low Arctic sea ice extent in 2012 linked to two-year La Niña-driven sea surface temperature pattern

<p class="Abstract"><span>Arctic summer sea ice decline accelerated from the mid-2000s to 2012, with the 2012 record low remaining unbroken. While frequent La Niña events during this period have been suggested as a driver of this trend acceleration, no convincing evidence has been presented. Here, using a climate model nudged to observed pan-tropical sea surface temperatures (SST), we show that the back-to-back La Niña events during 2010–2011, followed by a North Pacific cooling and a marginal El Niño, were a key contribution to the 2012 record low. Specifically, the La Niña events in 2010–2011 warmed the Arctic Pacific sector, whereas tropical SST anomalies in 2012 strengthened the Greenland high pressure, leading to an Arctic dipole-like pressure pattern and strengthening of transpolar ice drift. These Arctic temperature and circulation anomalies led to the record low sea ice extent in 2012, highlighting the strong influence of tropical SSTs on Arctic climate.</span></p>

No-analogue associations in the fossil record of southern conifers reveal conservatism in precipitation, but not temperature axes

<p><span class="Heading1Char"><span>Aim:</span></span> Southern conifers have evolved under different evolutionary pressures to northern lineages, but in both regions these plants have undergone extensive extinction and range alteration over the Cenozoic (the last 66 million years). It is not possible to directly observe the ecology of fossils, but indirect evidence of changes in bioclimatic envelopes can be derived from no-analogue assemblages – groups of co-occurring fossils that have climatically incongruous living relatives. We identify and examine the specific pairs of no-analogue fossils within assemblages to disentangle the effects of climatic factors on past conifer extinctions, and suggest which of these factors are likely to threaten southern conifer biodiversity in the future.</p> <p><span class="Heading1Char"><span>Location:</span></span><span class="Heading1Char"><span><span> Southern Hemisphere</span></span></span></p> <p><span class="Heading1Char"><span>Time period:</span></span><span class="Heading1Char"><span><span> Cenozoic</span></span></span></p> <p><span class="Heading1Char"><span>Major taxa studied:</span></span><span class="Heading1Char"><span><span> Conifers</span></span></span></p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We use a recently developed method, 'hyperoverlap', to identify no-analogue pairs of southern conifers. We characterise each pair in terms of temperature and precipitation, and evaluate temporal patterns in no-analogue pairs. These analyses represent a novel approach to studying both no-analogue fossils, and past changes in bioclimatic envelopes.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: We identified 240 no-analogue pairs in the Cenozoic record of southern conifers. Most (75.4%) observations of no-analogue pairs are likely to result from a change in the thermal (rather than hydrological) distribution between the fossil taxa and their extant counterparts, regardless of region or assemblage age. Thus, the fossil record shows some thermal lability, but strong hydrological stability in the tolerances of these plants. This implies that most southern conifers have inhabited wet climates through the Cenozoic, which is consistent with physiological evidence suggesting strong conservatism in drought tolerance.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: Southern conifers have successfully adapted to a wide range of temperatures, but future changes in rainfall are likely to pose the greatest threat to these plants, either directly or indirectly (e.g., through increased incidence of fire in mesic areas).</p>

Data from: Resource specialists lead local insect community turnover associated with temperature – analysis of an 18-year full-seasonal record of moths and beetles

Insect responses to recent climate change are well documented, but the role of resource specialization in determining species vulnerability remains poorly understood. Uncovering local ecological effects of temperature change with high-quality, standardized data provides an important first opportunity for predictions about responses of resource specialists, and long-term time series are essential in revealing these responses. Here, we investigate temperature-related changes in local insect communities, using a sampling site with more than a quarter-million records from two decades (1992–2009) of full-season, quantitative light trapping of 1543 species of moths and beetles. We investigated annual as well as long-term changes in fauna composition, abundance and phenology in a climate-related context using species temperature affinities and local temperature data. Finally, we explored these local changes in the context of dietary specialization. Across both moths and beetles, temperature affinity of specialists increased through net gain of hot-dwelling species and net loss of cold-dwelling species. The climate-related composition of generalists remained constant over time. We observed an increase in species richness of both groups. Furthermore, we observed divergent phenological responses between cold- and hot-dwelling species, advancing and delaying their relative abundance, respectively. Phenological advances were particularly pronounced in cold-adapted specialists. Our results suggest an important role of resource specialization in explaining the compositional and phenological responses of insect communities to local temperature increases. We propose that resource specialists in particular are affected by local temperature increase, leading to the distinct temperature-mediated turnover seen for this group. We suggest that the observed increase in species number could have been facilitated by dissimilar utilization of an expanded growing season by cold- and hot-adapted species, as indicated by their oppositely directed phenological responses. An especially pronounced advancement of cold-adapted specialists suggests that such phenological advances might help minimize further temperature-induced loss of resource specialists. Although limited to a single study site, our results suggest several local changes in the insect fauna in concordance with expected change of larger-scale temperature increases.

GHRSST L3C hourly Atlantic reprocessed sub-skin sea surface temperature data record v1.0 from SEVIRI on MSG produced by OSISAF

A Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) dataset for the Eastern Atlantic Region from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) on the MSG satellites (Meteosat-8 and Meteosat-9). The European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF) has reprocessed SST products in (long) delayed-mode from MSG/SEVIRI. SST is retrieved from the SEVIRI infrared channels (10.8 and 12.0 micrometer) using a multispectral algorithm and the cloud mask (CM) from OSI SAF. Atmospheric profiles of water vapor and temperature from a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model, OSTIA Sea Surface Temperature re-analysis and analysis, together with a radiative transfer model (RTTOV), are used to correct the multispectral algorithm for regional and seasonal biases due to changing atmospheric conditions. Every 15-minute slot is processed at full satellite resolution. The products are then produced by remapping over a 0.05-degree regular grid (60S-60N and 60W-60E) SST fields obtained by aggregating all available 15-minute SST data into hourly files with priority being given to the value closest in time to the product nominal hour. The product format is compliant with the GHRSST Data Specification (GDS) version 2.
