Transformed crane data from: Balancing structural complexity with ecological insight in spatio-temporal species distribution models
<p>The potential for statistical complexity in species distribution models (SDMs) has greatly increased with advances in computational power. Structurally complex models provide the flexibility to analyse intricate ecological systems and realistically messy data, but can be difficult to interpret, reducing their practical impact. Founding model complexity in ecological theory can improve insight gained from SDMs. </p> <p>Here, we evaluate a marked point process approach, which uses multiple Gaussian random fields to represent population dynamics of the Eurasian crane (<em>Grus grus</em>) in a spatio-temporal species distribution model. We discuss the role of model components and their impacts on predictions, in comparison with a simpler binomial presence/absence approach. Inference is carried out using Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) with inlabru, an accessible and computationally efficient approach for Bayesian hierarchical modelling, which is not yet widely used in SDMs. </p> <p>Using the marked point process approach, crane distribution was predicted to be dependent on the density of suitable habitat patches, as well as close to observations of the existing population. This demonstrates the advantage of complex model components in accounting for spatio-temporal population dynamics (such as habitat preferences and dispersal limitations) that are not explained by environmental variables. However, including an AR1 temporal correlation structure in the models resulted in unrealistic predictions of species distribution; highlighting the need for careful consideration when determining the level of model complexity.</p> <p>Increasing model complexity, with careful evaluation of the effects of additional model components, can provide a more realistic representation of a system, which is of particular importance for a practical and impact-focused discipline such as ecology (though these methods extend to applications for a wide range of systems). Founding complexity in contextual theory is not only fundamental to maintaining model interpretability, but can be a useful approach to improving insight gained from model outputs. </p>

<p><span>Frontotemporal lobe abnormalities are linked to neuropsychiatric disorders and cognition, but the role of cellular heterogeneity between temporal lobe (TL) and frontal lobe (FL) in the vulnerability to genetic risk factors remains to be elucidated. We provided single-nucleus transcriptome analysis in “fresh” human FL and TL which are integrated with genetic susceptibility, gene dysregulation in neuropsychiatric disease, and psychoactive drug response data. We show how intrinsic differences between TL and FL contribute to the vulnerability of specific cell types to both genetic risk factors and psychoactive drugs. Neuronal populations, specifically PVALB-neurons, were most highly vulnerable to genetic risk factors for psychiatric disease. These psychiatric disease-associated genes were mostly upregulated in the TL, and dysregulated in the brain of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. these data provide prefound insight into brain frontotemporal lobe.</span></p>
Data for: Temporal variation of soil microarthropods in different forest types and regions of Central Europe
<p>Biodiversity and biomass of aboveground arthropods in Central European forests continuously declined during the last decade. However, whether belowground microarthropod communities follow similar patterns has not been investigated. In this study, we compared the abundance, diversity, community composition, stability and asynchrony of oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatida) sampled in four forest types of increasing management intensity (unmanaged beech, old managed beech, young managed beech, and coniferous) at three-year intervals from 2008 to 2020. Forest sites were replicated in three regions in southern, central and northern Germany, i.e. the Swabian Alb, Hainich-Dün and the Schorfheide Chorin, which differ in soil characteristics and climate. We found 25,152 individuals and 121 species of oribatid mites and detected no linear decline in abundance and diversity over the last decade, suggesting that microarthropods in forest soils are buffered against land-use effects. However, we observed that years with low winter precipitation in regions with soils that are prone to drought, resulted in significant decreases in oribatid mite densities. Community compositions remained similar across sampling years, but differed between regions and forest types, predominantly due to differences in the proportion of asexual individuals. The stability of oribatid mite communities did not decrease in managed forests and was highest in deep soils with high water-holding capacity, which may reduce temporal variation, suggesting that soil properties are more important for the stability of oribatid mite communities than forest management. However, stability patterns were not explained by asynchrony in species fluctuations, as all communities either showed a high degree of synchrony or were not different from random. Our study highlights that the temporal dynamics of belowground communities may differ from those aboveground, and that regional differences in precipitation and soil properties are more important than forest types.</p>

Data for "Temporally Variable Stream Width and Surface Area Distributions in a Headwater Catchment" by Barefoot et al.
<p>This repository holds data necessary for reproducing results from Barefoot et al. (in prep). The data is a record of high-resolution stream width measurements in Stony Creek, a headwater stream in North Carolina, USA. Included are:</p> <ul> <li>Width measurements for 13 surveys collected from 2015 to 2016. </li> <li>High-resolution discharge measurements of discharge collected over the same period.</li> <li>Data summarizing the topology of the drainage network during each survey.</li> <li>A 5-year record of discharge from the closest USGS gauge for historical flow characterization. </li> <li>Data for estimating measurement error. </li> <li>A summary table for drainage density during each survey as well as other summary statistics. </li> <li>Geographic data detailing the mapped stream locations. </li> </ul> <p>The records span a range of discharge conditions measured from summer 2015 to spring 2016. Data from: Temporal and spatial variation in reproductive benefits in a partial migrant
<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><span>In partial migrant systems, where residents and migrants co-exist within a population, residents are commonly predicted to gain a reproductive advantage over migrants through priority access to high quality territories and an earlier breeding start. Annual variation in reproductive benefits has been suggested to be important for the co-existence of both strategies in a population, as differences in wintering conditions experienced by the two strategies may result in a periodic reproductive advantage for migrants. However, the importance of spatial environmental variation for reproductive output in partially migrant populations remains largely unexplored. We investigated variation in the reproductive output of migrants and residents in a population of Swiss red kites (<em>Milvus milvus</em>) both temporally, across and within years, and spatially, along an elevational gradient. We gathered four years of reproductive data combined with 183 GPS-derived full annual cycles from individuals breeding in the Swiss Alpine foothills. At low, but not high elevations residents produced more fledglings than migrants. We also found evidence for annual variation in the reproductive advantage of the two strategies. Furthermore, while reproductive output did decline with a later breeding start, there was no difference in the start of breeding between the two migration strategies. The results of this study suggest that differences in reproductive output between migrants and residents in partial migrant populations can vary due to both the use of spatially distinct overwintering grounds, as well as being differently affected by spatial variables in breeding areas, such as elevation. The study emphasizes that spatial and temporal variation in reproductive benefits must be considered when predicting how migratory species will respond to future environmental change.</span></p>
Dog neuroimaging data from: Action observation reveals a network with divergent temporal and parietal cortex engagement in dogs compared to humans
<p>Action observation is a fundamental pillar of social cognition. Neuroimaging research has revealed a human and non-human primate action observation network (AON) encompassing fronto-temporo-parietal areas with links to the species’ imitation tendencies and relative lobe expansion. Dogs (Canis familiaris) have good action perception and imitation skills and a less expanded parietal than temporal cortex, but their AON remains unexplored. We conducted a functional MRI study with 28 dogs and 40 humans and found functionally analogous involvement of somatosensory and temporal brain areas of both species’ AONs and responses to transitive and intransitive action observation in line with their imitative skills. Employing a functional localizer, we also identified functionally analogous agent-responsive areas within both species’ AONs. However, activation and task-based functional connectivity measures suggested significantly less parietal cortex involvement in dogs than in humans. These findings advance our understanding of the neural bases of action understanding and the convergent evolution of social cognition, with analogies and differences resulting from similar social environments and divergent brain expansion, respectively.</p> <p>This data set contains:</p> <ul> <li>raw functional neuroimaging data of <em>N</em> = 28 dogs</li> <li>structural scans of the same dogs including brain masks & skull-stripped versions</li> <li>eventfiles containing the condition names, onsets and durations for each dog and task run</li> </ul> <p>Data of the comparative human neuroimaging sample will be made available by the first author upon reasonable request.</p> <p>Please also visit our Open Science Framework project site for group-level imaging data of both species (https://osf.io/z479k/).</p>

Data for "Temporal and vertical variability in phytoplankton primary production and microbial community respiration in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre"
<p>This ALOHA_GOP&R.xslx data set provides measurements of biological rates conducted between April 2015 and July 2020 at different depths in the euphotic zone at or in the vicinity of Station ALOHA (22° 45' N, 158° W), the long-term sampling site of the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) program, within the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. </p> <p>The file ALOHA_GOP&R.xslx contains incubation-based measurements of gross oxygen production and community respiration that were measured in the same incubation bottles by applying the <sup>18</sup>O-water method and tracking net changes in oxygen to argon ratios during dawn to dusk in situ incubations, following Ferrón et al. (2016). The samples were measured using membrane inlet mass spectrometry.
