HAMSTER: Hyperspectral Albedo Maps dataset with high Spatial and TEmporal Resolution
<p>This dataset contains 365 hyperspectral albedo maps of Earth with a temporal resolution of 1 day. The hyperspectral albedo maps are built from a 10-year average of the MODIS Surface Reflectance dataset (MCD43D42-48, version 6.1). Using a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) regression algorithm we combine different hyperspectral laboratory and in-situ measurements datasets of various dry soils, vegetation surfaces and mixure of both to reconstruct the albedo maps in the entire wavelength range from 400 to 2500 nm. The hyperspectral albedo maps have a spatial resolution of 0.25° in latitude and longitude.</p> <p>Additional hyperspectral albedo maps with a coarser spatial and spectral resolutions are available in the "Data sets" supplemetary material of "HAMSTER: Hyperspectral Albedo Maps dataset with high Spatial and TEmporal Resolution" (Roccetti et al., 2024, https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2024-167) or upon request to the corresponding author.</p>

<p>PTEC provides spatiotemporally estimates of Gross Primary Productivity based on a two-leaf light use efficiency model incorporating plant water status and phenology. PTEC integrates a set of satellite and climate variables within a parsimonious modeling framework to be simple yet robust and grounded on eco-physiological principles. Available at 8-day/monthly/annual and 0.05° resolution from 2001 to 2021, PTEC shows superior performance compared to benchmark products.</p>

Data from: Evolutionary rates of mid-Permian tetrapods from South Africa and the role of temporal resolution in turnover reconstruction
The Main Karoo Basin of South Africa contains a near-continuous sequence of continental deposition spanning 45 million years from the middle Permian to the Early Jurassic. The terrestrial vertebrates of this sequence provide a high-resolution stratigraphic record of regional origination and extinction, especially for the middle–late Permian. Until now, data have only been surveyed at coarse stratigraphic resolution using methods that are biased by non-uniform sampling rates, limiting our understanding of the dynamics of diversification through this important time period. High-resolution data now cross the mid-to-late Permian transition; to these we apply robust methods (gap-filler and modified gap-filler rates) for the inference of patterns of species richness, origination rates and extinction rates to a subset of 1321 securely-identified fossil occurrences resolved to approximately 50 metre stratigraphic intervals. This dataset provides an approximate time resolution of 0.3-0.6 million years and shows that extinction rates increased considerably in the upper 100 metres of the middle Permian Abrahamskraal Formation, corresponding to the latest part of the Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone (AZ). Origination rates were weakly elevated in the same interval, and were not sufficient to compensate for these extinctions. Subsampled species richness estimates for the lower part of the overlying Teekloof Formation (corresponding to the Pristerognathus and Tropidostoma AZs) are low, and show that species richness remained low for at least 1.5–3 million years after the main extinction pulse. A high unevenness of the taxon abundance-frequency distribution, which is classically associated with trophically unstable post-extinction faunas, in fact developed shortly before the acme of elevated extinction rates due to the appearance and proliferation of the dicynodont Diictodon. Our findings provide strong support for a Capitanian ('end-Guadalupian') extinction event among terrestrial vertebrates and suggest that further high-resolution quantitative studies may help resolve the lack of consensus among palaeobiologists regarding this event.
Data from: Oscillayers: a dataset for the study of climatic oscillations over Plio-Pleistocene time scales at high spatial-temporal resolution
Motivation: In order to understand how species evolutionarily responded to Plio-Pleistocene climate oscillations (e.g. in terms of speciation, extinction, migration and adaptation), it is first important to have a good understanding of those past climate changes per se. This, however, is currently limited due to the lack of global-scale climatic datasets with high temporal resolution spanning the Plio-Pleistocene. To fill this gap, I here present Oscillayers, a global-scale and region-specific bioclim dataset, facilitating the study of climatic oscillations during the last 5.4 million years at high spatial (2.5 arc-minutes) and temporal (10 kyr time periods) resolution. This data set builds upon interpolated anomalies (Δ layers) between bioclim layers of the present and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) that are scaled relative to the Plio-Pleistocene global mean temperature curve, derived from benthic stable oxygen isotope ratios, to generate bioclim variables for 539 time periods. Evaluation of the scaled, interpolated estimates of palaeo-climates generated for the Holocene, Last Interglacial and Pliocene showed good agreement with independent General Circulation Models (GCMs) for respective time periods in terms of pattern correlation and absolute differences. Oscillayers thus provides a new tool for studying spatial-temporal patterns of evolutionary and ecological processes at high temporal and spatial resolution. Main types of variable contained: 19 bioclim variables for time periods throughout the Plio-Pleistocene. Input data and R script to recreate all 19 bioclim variables. Spatial location and grain: Global at 2.5 arc-minutes (4.65 x 4.65 = 21.62 km2 at the equator). Time period and grain: The last 5.4 million years. The grain is 10 kyr (= 539 time periods). Level of measurement: Data are for terrestrial climates (excluding Antarctica) taking sea level changes into account. Software format: All data are available as ASCII (ESRI) grid files.

Many species of songbirds exhibit dramatic seasonal variation in song output. Recent evidence suggests that seasonal changes in auditory processing are coincident with seasonal variation in vocal output. Here we show for the first time that frequency selectivity and temporal resolution of the songbird auditory periphery change seasonally and in a sex-specific manner. Male and female house sparrows (Passer domesticus) did not differ in their frequency sensitivity during the non-breeding season, nor did they differ in their temporal resolution. In contrast, female house sparrows showed enhanced frequency selectivity during the breeding season which was matched by a concomitant reduction of temporal resolution. However, males failed to show seasonal plasticity in either of these auditory properties. We discuss potential mechanisms generating these seasonal patterns and the implications of sex-specific seasonal changes in auditory processing for vocal communication.
