Data from: Tetra-EU 1.0: a species-level trophic meta-web of European tetrapods

Motivation Documenting potential interactions between species represents a major step to understand and predict the spatial and temporal structure of multi-trophic communities and their functioning. The metaweb concept summarises the potential trophic (and non-trophic) interactions in a given species-pool. As such, it generalises the regional species-pool of community ecology by incorporating the potential relationships between species from different trophic levels along with their functional characteristics. However, while this concept is theoretically very attractive, it has rarely been used to understand the structure of ecological network, mostly because of data availability. Here, we provide a continental scale, species-level, metaweb for all tetrapods (mammals, breeding birds, reptiles, amphibians) occurring in Europe and in the Northern Mediterranean basin. This metaweb is based on data extracted from scientific literature, including published papers, books, and grey literature. Main type of variable contained For each species considered, we built the network of potential 2-way trophic interactions. Spatial location and grain We considered all species occurring in the entire European sub-continent, from Macaronesia (including only the islands politically belonging to Spain and Portugal) to the Ural Mountains (west to east), and from Fennoscandia and UK islands to the Mediterranean (north to south). We included Turkey, geographically part of Asia, to provide a complete picture of the north-eastern Mediterranean coast. Time period The data represent information published and/or collected during the last 50 years. Major taxa studied and level of measurement We focused our metaweb on terrestrial tetrapods occurring in the study area. Only species introduced in historical times and currently naturalized were considered; novel introductions were excluded. In total we included 288 mammals, 509 regularly breeding birds, 250 reptiles, and 104 amphibians. Software format Data are supplied as semi-colon separated text files.

Seasonality and interspecific competition shape individual niche variation in co-occurring tetra fish in Neotropical streams

The drivers of intraspecific niche variation and its effects on species interactions are still unclear, especially in species-rich Neotropical environments. Here, we investigated how ecological opportunity and interspecific competition affect the degree of individual trophic specialization and the population niche breadth in tetra fish. We studied the four ecologically similar species (Psalidodon aff. gymnodontus, P. aff. paranae, P. bifasciatus, and Bryconamericus ikaa) in subtropical headwater streams (three sites with two co-occurring species and three sites with only one species). We sampled fish in two contrasting seasons (winter/dry and summer/wet), and quantified their trophic niches using gut content analysis. Psalidodon bifasciatus was the only species distributed over all the sampled streams. We observed seasonal differences in population trophic niche breadth of P. bifasciatus just when this species co-occurred with P. aff. gymnodontus. These findings confirm the complex nature of the effects of interspecific competition, depending, for instance, on the identity of the competitor. The degree of individual specialization of P. bifasciatus was higher in the winter, and it was not influenced by the presence of another species. Conversely, the other two Psalidodon species studied presented greater individual specialization in the summer, when fish consumed a higher proportion of allochthonous items (terrestrial insects and seeds), and there were no effects only for B. ikaa. Herein, our results suggest that seasonality in food-resource availability is a major driver of niche variation and it has the potential to play an important role in how these similar tetra species interact and coexist.

Attractive males are cautious and better learners in the sailfin tetra

<p>A major component of Darwin's formulation of sexual selection theory is whether mate choice can contribute to the evolution of cognitive abilities. Although a correlation between cognition and attractive traits has commonly been reported, the processes that generate such associations remain elusive. Here, we investigated female preference, neophobia and spatial learning in the sailfin tetra, <em>Crenuchus spilurus</em>, a sexually dimorphic fish. Females chose the most ornamented males, which were also more neophobic. This is in line with the asset protection principle, which posits that attractive males should be more cautious because of their higher prospective fitness returns. After repeated exposure, more ornamented males learnt to navigate the complex maze faster, with chosen (and highest ornamented) males showing higher accuracy to solve the maze on the last day of trials. Because the asset protection principle stems from predation pressure, we propose that sexual selection through female mate choice creates a risk–reward trade-off, upon which natural selection acts by indirectly increasing learning abilities. As such, sexual selection forms the substrate, but natural selection drives enhanced cognitive abilities in attractive <em>C. spilurus</em> males.<span> </span></p>

Raw Diffraction Images: Formation of a highly dense tetra rhenium cluster in a protein crystal and its implications in medical imaging.

<p>Exploration of a &ldquo;time on shelf&rdquo; protein structure containing the radiopharmaceutical synthon <em>fac</em>-[Re(CO)<sub>3</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>O)<sub>3</sub>]<sup>+ </sup>as an <em>in vivo</em> reaction vessel to form tetranuclear rhenium clusters appropriate for theranostic applications.That a protein crystal can serve as a chemical reaction vessel is intrinsically fascinating. That it can produce an electron dense tetranuclear rhenium cluster compound from a rhenium tricarbonyl tribromo starting compound adds to the fascination. The cluster has been synthesised before in vitro when it formed under basic conditions. Therefore its synthesis in a protein crystal grown at pH4.5 is even more unexpected. The X-ray crystal structures presented here are for the protein hen egg white lysozyme incubated with the rhenium tricarbonyl tribromo compound for periods of 1 year and 2 years. These reveal a completed, very well resolved, tetra rhenium cluster after two years and an intermediate state after 1 year where the carbonyl ligands to the rhenium cluster are not yet clearly resolved. A dense tetra-nuclear rhenium cluster, and its technetium form, offers enhanced medical imaging contrast. The raw diffraction images for the one year and two year protein structure, described in the manuscript, is made avaliable on the Zenodo repository.</p>

Data from: Seasonal population and individual niche dynamics in a tetra fish in the Pantanal wetlands

In seasonal tropical regions, rainfall and/or temporary floods during the wet season generally increase the abundance and diversity of food resources to many consumers as compared to the dry season. Therefore, seasonality can affect intraspecific competition and ecological opportunity, which are two important ecological mechanisms underlying population and individual niche variations. Here, we took advantage of the strong seasonality in the Pantanal wetlands to investigate how within- and between-individual diet variations relate to seasonal population niche dynamics of the tetra fish Astyanax lacustris. We quantified dietary niche using gut contents and stable isotopes. Tetras had higher gut fullness and better body condition in the wet season, suggesting that competition is more intense in the dry season. The population niche was broader in the wet season due to an increase in diet divergence between individuals, in spite of potential stronger competition in the dry season. We posit that low ecological opportunity in the dry season limits the diversifying effect of intraspecific competition, constraining population niche expansion. Our results add new insights on how seasonality affects population and individual diets, indicating that intraspecific competition and ecological opportunity interact to determine temporal niche variations in seasonal environments.
