Physico-chemical characterization of sterilized TiO2 PVP nanoparticles by XPS / HAXPES / SEM
<p>Here a dataset of XPS, HAXPES and SEM measurements for the physico-chemical characterization of sterilized nanoparticles is presented. The measurements are part of the H2020 project “NanoSolveIT”.</p> <p>TiO2 PVP nanoparticles were provided by Promethean Particles and treated differently by project partners from the University of Birmingham (EMR identifier in the project: ERM00000414, ERM00000456, ERM00000435).</p> <p>The particles were treated by different sterilization methods (autoclave or microwave) and BSA was or was not added as stabilizer. This finally leads to five different samples: pristine, autoclave, microwave, autoclave with BSA, microwave with BSA.</p> <p>Prior to the measurements, the samples were prepared from the solution as drop cast on Si wafers. First SEM and EDS measurements were performed, followed by XPS and HAXPES measurements on the same samples. Here at first survey spectra were recorded followed by high resolution spectra. For XPS / HAXPES several Si-wafers were mounted together on one platen. The platen was left in the intro chamber of the instrument for several hours before the measurement started.</p> <p>Equipment:</p> <p>SEM images were acquired with a <em>Supra 40 </em>(Zeiss) SEM equipped with a <em>Quantax 400 </em>(Bruker) SDD EDS spectrometer.</p> <p>For X-ray spectroscopy experiments, a combined XPS / HAXPES spectrometer (<em>Quantes </em>from ULVAC-PHI) was used, where XPS is measured at 1486.6 eV (monochromatic Al Kα source) and HAXPES at 5414.9 eV (monochromatic Cr Kα source). Here it is possible to perform the measurements at the exact same position.</p> <p>Data:</p> <p>For SEM, the data are given in .tif format. For XPS / HAXPES the raw data are given as .spe (PHI format) and .npl (VAMAS format) files. The measurement conditions are given in the data files.</p> <p>Naming of data:</p> <p>SEM: <em>sample_treatment (n)</em>, with n a consecutive number.</p> <p>XPS / HAXPES: For the .spe and for the corresponding .npl files <em>Pn.m.o.sample_treatment, </em>with Pn: platen-number, m: spectrum number (order of the measurements); o: point-number, of the position on the sample, sample_treatment with "m" for microwave and "a" for autoclave.</p> <p> </p> <p>The authors thank Sigrid Benemann, who performed the SEM measurements.</p>

Data from: Photocatalytic Inactivation of E. coli under UV Light Irradiation using Large Surface Area Anatase TiO2 Quantum Dots
In this study, high specific surface area of anatase TiO2 quantum dots were successfully synthesized through a novel one-step microwave-hydrothermal method in rapid synthesis time (20 min) without further heat treatment. XRD analysis and HR-TEM images showed that the as-prepared TiO2 quantum dots of ~2 nm size have high crystallinity with anatase phase. Optical properties showed that the energy band-gap (Eg) of as-prepared TiO2 quantum dots was 3.60 eV, which is higher than the standard TiO2 bandgap, which might be due to the quantum size effect. Raman studies showed shifting and broadening of the peaks of TiO2 quantum dots due to the reducing of the crystallite size. The obtained BET specific surface area (381 m2/g) of TiO2 quantum dots is greater compared to the surface area (181 m2/g) of commercial TiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activities of TiO2 quantum dots were conducted by the inactivation of E. coli under ultraviolet light irradiation and compared with commercially available anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic inactivation ability of E. coli was estimated to be 91% at 60 μg/ml for TiO2 quantum dots, which is superior to the commercial TiO2 nanoparticles. Hence, the present study provides new insight into the rapid synthesis of TiO2 quantum dots without any annealing treatment to increase the absorbance of ultraviolet light for superior photocatalytic inactivation ability of E. coli.
Data from: Irradiation-catalyzed degradation of methyl orange using BaF2-TiO2 nanocomposite catalysts prepared by a sol–gel method
BaF2-TiO2 nanocomposite material (hereinafter called the composite) was prepared by a sol–gel method. And the composite surface area, morphology and structure were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that BaF2 and TiO2 form a PN-like structure on the surface of the composite. Composites were used to catalyze the degradation of methyl orange by irradiation with ultraviolet light, γ-rays, and an electron beam(EB). It was demonstrated that the composite is found to be more efficient than prepared TiO2 and commercial P25 in the degradation of methyl orange under γ-irradiation. And increasing the composite catalyst concentration within a certain range can effectively improve the decolorization rate of the methyl orange solution. However, when the composite material is used to catalyze the degradation of organic matter in the presence of ultraviolet light or 10 MeV electron beam irradiation, the catalytic effect is poor or substantially ineffective. In addition, a hybrid mechanism is proposed; BaF2 absorbs γ-rays to generate radioluminescence(RL) and further excites TiO2 to generate photo-charges. And due to the heterojunction effect, the resulting photo-charge will produce more active particles. This seems to be a possible mechanism to explain γ-irradiation catalytic behavior.
Data from: Photocatalytic activity of graphene oxide–TiO2 thin films sensitized by natural dyes extracted from Bactris guineensis
This study synthesized and characterized composites of graphene oxide and TiO2 (GO-TiO2). GO-TiO2 thin films were deposited using the Doctor Blade technique. Subsequently, the thin films were sensitized with a natural dye extracted from a Colombian source (Bactris guineensis). Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and diffuse reflectance measurements were used for physicochemical characterization. All the samples were polycrystalline in nature, and the diffraction signals corresponded to the TiO2 anatase crystalline phase. Raman spectroscopy and FT-IR verified the synthesis of composite thin films, and the SEM analysis confirmed the TiO2 films morphological modification after the process of GO incorporation and sensitization. XPS results suggested a possibility of appearance of Titanium (III) through the formation of oxygen vacancies (Ov). Furthermore, the optical results indicated that the presence of the natural sensitizer and GO improved the optical properties of TiO2 in the visible range. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) was studied under visible irradiation in aqueous solution, and pseudo-first order model was used to obtain kinetic information about photocatalytic degradation. These results indicated that the presence of GO has an important synergistic effect in conjunction with the natural sensitizer, reaching a photocatalytic yield of 33%.
Data from: Electrospinning preparation of oxygen-deficient nano TiO2-x/carbon fibre membrane as a self-standing high performance anode for Li-ion batteries
Improving the specific capacity and electronic conductivity of TiO2 can boost its practical application as a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries. In this work, a three-dimensional networking oxygen-deficient nano TiO2-x/carbon fibre membrane was achieved by combining the electrospinning process with a hot-press sintering method and directly used as a self-standing anode. With the synergistic effects of three-dimensional conductive networks, surface oxygen deficiency, high specific surface area and high porosity, binder-free and self-standing structure, etc., the nano TiO2-x/carbon fibre membrane electrode displays a high electrochemical reaction kinetics and a high specific capacity. The reversible capacity could be jointly generated from porous carbon, full-lithiation of TiO2 and interfacial lithium storage. At a current density of 100 mA g−1, the reversible discharge capacity can reach 464 mA h g−1. Even at 500 mA g−1, the discharge capacity still remains at 312 mA h g−1. Compared with pure carbon fibre and TiO2 powder, the TiO2-x/C fibre membrane electrode also exhibits an excellent cycle performance with a discharge capacity of 209 mA h g−1 after 700 cycles at the current density of 300 mA g−1, and the coulombic efficiency always remains at approximately 100%.
