Ion exchange membrane measure of nutrient availability of the 2015 experimental burn at Toolik Lake Field Station, Alaska 2016
An experimental burn conducted in the summer of 2015 to provide sites for an experiment whether seeds of Eriophorum vaginatum from different ecotypes could establish in recently burned areas. It consisted of ten 2 meter X 2 meter plots along with a similar number of control plots. There was little seedling establishment but other data were collected on the plots. Ion exchange membranes were used to measure nutrient availability over two time periods: Early season (June) and mid season (July).

Soil and canopy temperature data from the Arctic LTER 1989 Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots(MAT89). The station was established in 1990 in block 2 of a 4 block random block design. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake, Alaska (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Treatments include - control (CT), greenhouse (GH), greenhouse plus nitrogen and phosphorus (GHNP) shade (SH), shade plus nitrogen and phosphorus (SHNP) and nitrogen and phosphorus (NP). Profiles include above and within canopy, 10, 20 and 40 centimeter soil depths. Not all treatments have a complete profile. Meteorological data was also collected but are included in a separate data set.

Stream temperature and discharge measured each summer for Roche Moutonnee Creek and Trevor Creek. Dataloggers measured stream temperature and stream height at regular intervals. Stream height is converted into stream discharge based on a rating curve calculated from manual discharge measurements throughout the season. The principal investigator in charge of the temperature and discharge measurements is Dr. Breck Bowden.

We tested effects of temperature (12 and 19.3 degrees C; 27 days) on habitat use, consumption, and growth of slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus). To measure temperature selection by sculpin, we connected two 5.7 L tanks with a PVC pipe that was passable by sculpin (n = 12 tanks). We heated one side of the tank to 12 °C and the other to 19.3 °C using aquarium heaters.

Plants were part of a fertilization experiment begun in 2006 and included four levels of nutrient addition. For the simulated herbivory experiment, plants were not clipped, clipped once in 2018, or clipped every year of the experiment.

Whole plant biomass totals and root biomass (partitioned by percent of total leaf area) for species, tissue type, and functional group for the Arctic LTER experimental 1981 mesic acidic tussock tundra (MAT81) for the 2000 and 2015 harvests. Because most of the root biomass could not be identified to species in either 2000 or 2015, the calculation of root biomass and element content for roots not identified to species was estimated by the proportion of those species’ contributions to total leaf area. Specific Leaf Area (SLA = leaf area per gram leaf, centimeter squared per gram) values were available from several previous harvests of this experiment; in the present study, we used measurements from the 1995 harvest (Shaver et al. 2001).
Dark respiration and photosynthesis data from Dry Heath Nitrogen & Phosphorus addition plots, Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station, Alaska, summers 2023-2024.
To determine the effects of weather variability on Arctic plant functioning, we conducted this study looking at the response of plant dark respiration and photosynthesis to short-term, high-frequency, temperature and light variability. We measured Betula nana, Chamaenerion angustifolium, and Calamagrostis stricta from the dry heath tundra N&P fertilized plots. We took measurements through two summer seasons. The first summer we obtained data regarding responses to variable temperature and light, and in the second summer we obtained the dark respiration to temperature response and photosynthesis to light response curves.
Data from nitrogen isotopic analyses used to calculate biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) rates and field measurements from lichen, bryophyte, litter, and soil samples in MAT2006 plots, Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station, Alaska, summers 2022-2023.
This dataset contains nitrogen (N) fixation and isotope data from experimental samples collected at Toolik Lake, Alaska during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. Sampling was conducted across multiple block treatments to capture spatial variability and included four substrate types: lichen, moss, litter, and soil. Within each plot, substrates were collected systematically along transects to ensure representative sampling, with lichen samples collected opportunistically due to lower abundance. Samples were incubated in the field under ambient conditions using 15N₂ to measure biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). In 2023, a short-term wetting experiment was conducted to assess the influence of moisture on BNF rates, with subsamples exposed to controlled additions of water. Across both years, data include isotope ratios, incubation conditions, moisture, fresh and dry biomass, and treatment assignments. The dataset provides information on BNF across substrate types, moisture regimes, and fertilization treatments in Arctic tundra. These data support investigation of N cycling processes, the influence of moisture and fertilization on fixation rates, and variability across vegetation types. The dataset is complete for the two field seasons (2022 and 2023) and includes sample- and block-level metadata necessary for reuse in ecological and biogeochemical research.

"2012_GS_PFandCH_GPS" contains GPS locations of all datalogger, 1m x 1m chamber flux and point frame plots sampled IVO Toolik Field Station in Alaska during the summer of 2012. The sorting variables (YEAR, DATE, SITE, GROUP, PLOT, TREAT, PLOT SIZE) are identical to those in other files with data collected that season. The main purpose of this file is for reference and as an aid in interpretation of data analyses and among-site comparisons.
Photosynthetically Active Radiation data taken with the Delta-T SunScan wand every 15 cm of 1m x 1m chamber flux and point frame plots as well as four remotely monitored canopies at the Toolik Field Station in AK, Summer 2012.
Within-canopy PAR was measured with a Delta-T SunScan wand every 15 cm from the ground to above the canopy under both direct and diffuse light. The data includes all outputs from the SunScan wand: time of measurement, spread of PAR sensors, total irradiance, total diffuse light, and individual outputs of 64-PAR sensors on the SunScan wand. These measurements were taken for 1m x 1m chamber flux (n=14) and point frame (n=19) plots as well as sites four montitored remotely by PAR sensors located above, within, and below shrub canopies. All plots were dominated either by tall Salix pulchra and Betula nana species and were located near the LTER shrub plots at Toolik Field Station , AK in the summer of 2012.
