Data from: Ultraviolet signaling in a butterfly is preferred by females and conveys male genetic quality

<p>Indicator models of sexual selection posit that females chose males on the basis of traits that reveal male genetic quality and thereby enjoy increased offspring production. Here we report that females of the butterfly Eurema hecabe receive indirect benefits from choosing males based on their UV wing colouration, a heritable and condition-dependent trait in this species. We first used a large laboratory-bred pedigree to demonstrate a per-family association between inbreeding and male UV trait value. Females exerted choice for UV-bright males within this protocol, and average male UV trait value increased over six consecutive generations presumably due to such selection and despite an increasing rate of pedigree-wide inbreeding. We then experimentally imposed a standard strength of inbreeding upon lines of divergent male UV trait value. Inbreeding depressed the siring performance of low-UV treatment males more severely and resulted in a marginal reduction of their UV brightness, which rebounded sharply following subsequent outcrossing. These findings are consistent with the ornament-based signaling of genetic quality as a function of underlying individual-level mutational load.</p>

A database of 10 km Ultraviolet Radiation Product over mainland China: 2005-2020

<ul> <li>Data products with a 10km spatial resolution across mainland China for the years 2005-2020 were generated using a random forest model, incorporating ground UV radiation measurements, satellite remote sensing data, and re-analysis dataset. The R<sup>2</sup> (root mean square error, RMSE) was 0.97 (15.64 W m<sup>-2</sup>) for model development and 0.83 (37.44 W m<sup>-2</sup>) for overall 10-fold cross-validation at daily level, demonstrating high accuracy of the product.</li> <li>The data is formatted as CSV files.&nbsp;</li> </ul>

Vocal range and ultraviolet-induced photoluminescence in gliding mammals and their relatives

<p>Gliding is only present in six extant groups of mammals – interestingly, despite divergent evolutionary histories, all mammalian gliders are strictly nocturnal. Gliding mammals also seem to have relatively high rates of ultrasound use and ultraviolet-induced photoluminescence (UVP) in contrast with their close relatives. Therefore, we hypothesized that, despite diverging lineages, gliding mammals use similar modes of cryptic communication compared to their non-gliding counterparts. We developed two datasets containing the vocal range (minimum-maximum of the dominant harmonic; kHz) and UVP of 73 and 82 species, respectively; we report five novel vocal repertoires and 57 novel observations of the presence or absence of UVP. We complemented these datasets with information about body size, diel activity patterns, habitat openness, and sociality to explore possible covariates related to vocal production and UVP. We found that the maximum of the dominant harmonic was significant higher in gliding mammals when vocalizing than their non-gliding relatives. Additionally, we found that nocturnality was the only significant predictor of UVP, consistent with the previous hypothesis that luminophores primarily drive UVP in mammal fur. In contrast, however, we did not find UVP ubiquitous in nocturnal mammals, suggesting that some unknown process may contribute to variation in this trait.</p>

Far Ultraviolet Variable Stars in M31:

<p>The AstroSAT/UVIT survey of M31 has observed the central part of M31 in FUV at different epochs, allowing a search for FUV variables. Here we report the detection of &gt;100 variables (at &gt;5-sigma confidence) and &gt;1000 variables (at &gt;3-sigma confidence). Counterparts are found for most of the &gt;5-sigma variables. Most of the counterparts are young massive stars or stellar clusters. Results on the nature of the counterparts will be presented.</p>

Ancestral environment determines the current reaction to ultraviolet radiation in Daphnia magna

<p><span>An individual's phenotype can be altered by direct contact with its present environment but also by environmental features experienced by previous generations, i.e. parental or grandparental effects. However, the strength and direction of these transgenerational effects may be highly variable according to the ecological conditions experienced by ancestral generations. Here we performed a reciprocal split-brood experiment to compare transgenerational responses to the threat of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in the zooplankter <em>Daphnia magna</em>, which had, or had not, been exposed to UVR for more than 150 generations, respectively. We found that the environment at which parents and grandparents were reared significantly influenced both behavior and life-history traits of their descendants. However, such transgenerational responses </span><span>differed between <em>D. magna</em> individuals with contrasting ancestral stress history</span><span>, that is, when exposed to UVR previously unexposed individuals rapidly changed their behavior and life-history traits, whereas individuals previously exposed to UVR showed less pronounced response when the UVR threat level relaxed. Hence, we here demonstrate an asymmetric transgenerational plasticity in response to UVR threat. The findings advance our understanding on the evolutionary ecology of such transgenerational effects and their potential role in response to changes in the local environment.</span></p>

Higher ultraviolet skin reflectance signals submissiveness in the anemonefish, Amphiprion akindynos

<p>Ultraviolet (UV) vision is widespread among teleost fishes, of which many exhibit UV skin colours for communication. However, aside from its role in mate selection, few studies have examined the information UV-signalling conveys in other socio-behavioural contexts. Anemonefishes (subfamily, Amphiprioninae) live in a fascinating dominance hierarchy, in which a large female and male dominate over non-breeding subordinates, and body size is the primary cue for dominance. The iconic orange and white bars of anemonefishes are highly UV-reflective, and their colour vision is well-tuned to perceive the chromatic contrast of skin, which we show here decreases in the amount of UV-reflectance with increasing social rank. To test the function of their UV-skin signals, we compared the outcomes of staged contests over dominance between size-matched Barrier Reef anemonefish (<em>Amphiprion akindynos</em>) in aquarium chambers viewed under different UV-absorbing filters. Fish under UV-blocking filters were more likely to win contests, whereas fish under no-filter or neutral-density filter were more likely to submit. For contests between fish in no-filter and neutral density filter treatments, light treatment had no effect on contest outcome (win/lose). We also show that sub-adults were more aggressive towards smaller juveniles placed under a UV filter than a neutral density filter. Taken together, our results show that UV-reflectance or -contrast in anemonefish can modulate aggression and encode dominant and submissive cues when changes in overall intensity are controlled for.</p>

FUMES III: Ultraviolet and Optical Variability of M Dwarf Chromospheres

<p>We obtained ultraviolet and optical spectra for 9 M dwarfs across a range of rotation periods to determine whether they showed stochastic intrinsic variability distinguishable from flares. The ultraviolet spectra were observed during the Far Ultraviolet M Dwarf Evolution Survey <em>Hubble Space Telescope</em>&nbsp;program using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The optical observations were taken from the Apache Point Observatory 3.5-meter telescope using the Dual Imaging Spectrograph and from the Gemini South Observatory using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph. We used the optical spectra to measure multiple chromospheric lines: the Balmer series from H$\alpha$ to H$10$ and the Ca II H and K lines. We find that after excising flares, these lines vary on the order of $1-20\%$ at minute-cadence over the course of an hour. The absolute amplitude of variability was greater for the faster rotating M dwarfs in our sample. Among the 5 stars for which measured the weaker Balmer lines, we note a tentative trend that the fractional amplitude of the variability increases for higher order Balmer lines. We measured the integrated flux of multiple ultraviolet emission features formed in the transition region: the N V, Si IV, and C IV resonance line doublets, and the C II and He II&nbsp;multiplets. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the UV data was too low for us to detect non-flare variability at the same scale and time cadence as the optical. We consider multiple mechanisms for the observed stochastic variability and propose both observational and theoretical avenues of investigation to determine the physical causes of intrinsic variability in the chromospheres of M dwarfs.</p> <p>All code associated with the analysis and plots for this paper are included in .py&nbsp;scripts. All raw data for the optical spectra are its&nbsp;files compressed into a tar.gzip archive while all reduced spectra are in fits&nbsp;files. All tables are provided in the astropy&nbsp;ASCII&nbsp;text ecsv&nbsp;file format.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Optical Reduction Code</strong>:&nbsp;The reduction code is divided into two folders, one labelled &quot;pydis&quot; and another labelled &quot;pygemini&quot;.</li> <li><strong>Equivalent Width Measurements:</strong>&nbsp;The equivalent widths are measured using a combination of two tables for each exposure: one ending with the suffix &quot;ew_windows.ecsv&quot; that lists the boundaries of the blue and red continua windows and the continuum flux density value, and another ending with the suffix &quot;ew_lines.ecsv&quot; that lists the boundaries of the wavelength window, the integrated line flux with its error, and the equivalent width with its error. These tables are in a subdirectory named &quot;fit_tables&quot;.</li> <li><strong>spectralPhoton:</strong>&nbsp;The version of spectralPhoton&nbsp;code and the scripts we use to split the <em>Hubble</em>&nbsp;x1d&nbsp;spectra are in a directory named &quot;uv&quot;.</li> <li><strong>Line-fitting Tables:</strong>&nbsp;The parameter values and associated errors are recorded in tables structured similarly to the equivalent width tables, ending with suffixes &quot;windows.ecsv&quot; and &quot;lines.ecsv&quot;.</li> <li><strong>Time Series Tables:</strong>&nbsp;The equivalent widths and integrated line fluxes are collated into time series tables in the subdirectory &quot;time_series&quot;. Entries with cosmic ray hits in the middle of the line or other spectral defects have been commented out using a # symbol.</li> <li><strong>Posterior Distributions:</strong> All posterior samples and their log-likelihood values are recorded in numpy binary .npy&nbsp;files that can be read using the numpy.load()&nbsp;function. These files are divided into two subdirectories named ``abs&quot; &nbsp;and ``frac&quot; for the absolute and fractional flux fits respectively.</li> </ul>

Ultraviolet Echelle Spectrograph data for RR Telescopii

<p>This entry contains spectra of the star RR Telescopii obtained with the Ultraviolet Echelle Spectrograph (UVES), an instrument installed on the Kueyen telescope of the Very Large Telescope, on 1999 October 16. The spectra were used in the publications Young, Berrington &amp; Lobel (2005, A&amp;A, 432, 665) and&nbsp;Young, Feldman &amp; Lobel (2011, ApJS, 196, 23).</p> <p>The tar file is structured as follows:</p> <p>reduced/bluearm/withflat/<br> reduced/redarm/withflat/</p> <p>with the directories containing the echelle order spectra for the UVES blue arm and the UVES red arm, respectively.</p> <p>The echelle order spectra are contained in FITS files with names of the form blueNNNN.fits and redNNNN.fits, where the number NNNN gives the echelle order number. In each directory there is also a file WAVELENGTHS.txt that summarizes the wavelength range of each spectrum.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Can short-term data accurately model long-term environmental exposures? Investigating the multigenerational adaptation potential of Daphnia magna to environmental concentrations of organic ultraviolet filters

<p>Organic ultraviolet filters (UVFs) are contaminants of concern, ubiquitously found in many aquatic environments due to their use in personal care products to protect against ultraviolet radiation. Research regarding the toxicity of UVFs such as avobenzone, octocrylene and oxybenzone indicates that these chemicals may pose a threat to invertebrate species; however, minimal long-term studies have been conducted to determine how these UVFs may affect continuously exposed populations. The present study modeled the effects of a 5-generation exposure of <em>Daphnia</em> <em>magna</em> to these UVFs at environmental concentrations. Avobenzone and octocrylene resulted in minor, transient decreases in reproduction and wet mass. Oxybenzone exposure resulted in &gt; 40% mortality, 46% decreased reproduction and 4-fold greater reproductive failure over the F0 and F1 generations; however, normal function was largely regained by the F2 generation. These results indicate that <em>Daphnia</em> are able to acclimate over long-term exposures to concentrations of 6.59 μg/L avobenzone, ~0.6 μg/L octocrylene or 16.5 μg/L oxybenzone. This suggests that short-term studies indicating high toxicity may not accurately represent long-term outcomes in wild populations, adding additional complexity to risk assessment practices at a time when many regions are considering or implementing UVF bans in order to protect these most sensitive invertebrate species.</p>

Oviposition behaviour is not affected by ultraviolet light in a butterfly with sexually-dimorphic expression of a UV-sensitive opsin

<p>Animal vision is important for mediating multiple complex behaviours. In <em>Heliconius</em> butterflies, vision guides fundamental behaviours such as oviposition, foraging and mate choice. Colour vision in <em>Heliconius</em> involves ultraviolet (UV), blue and long- wavelength sensitive photoreceptors (opsins). Additionally, <em>Heliconius</em> possess a duplicated UV opsin, and its expression varies widely within the genus. In <em>Heliconius</em> <em>erato</em>, opsin expression is sexually dimorphic; only females express both UV-sensitive opsins, enabling UV wavelength discrimination. However, the selective pressures responsible for sex-specific differences in opsin expression and visual perception remain unresolved. Female <em>Heliconius</em> invest heavily in finding suitable hostplants for oviposition, a behaviour heavily dependent on visual cues. Here, we tested the hypothesis that UV vision is important for oviposition in <em>H</em>. <em>erato</em> and <em>Heliconius</em> <em>himera</em> females by manipulating the availability of UV in behavioural experiments under natural conditions. Our results indicate that UV does not influence the number of oviposition attempts or eggs laid, and the hostplant, <em>Passiflora</em> <em>punctata</em>, does not reflect UV wavelengths. Models of <em>H. erato</em> female vision suggest only minimal stimulation of the UV opsins. Overall, these findings suggest that UV wavelengths do not directly affect the ability of <em>Heliconius</em> females to find suitable oviposition sites. Alternatively, UV discrimination could be used in the context of foraging or mate choice, but this remains to be tested.</p>

SSUSI Images acquired by Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager aboard DMSP satellite from October to December during 2004-2006

<p>SSUSI is a far ultraviolet scanning imaging spectrometer, which can detect 5 spectral bands of ultraviolet aurora (HI-Lyman&nbsp;&alpha;@121.6 nm、&nbsp;OI@130.4nm、&nbsp;OI@135.6 nm、&nbsp;N2-LBHS@140-160&nbsp;nm and&nbsp;N2-LBHL@160-180&nbsp;nm) for synchronous scanning imaging observation, its mirror rotates perpendicular to the satellite orbit, and each scan produces&nbsp;an image of 16 &times;156pixels.&nbsp;Due to the DMSP satellites need 20-30 minutes to fly over the polar regions, SSUSI can obtain an image covering 1/3 to 1/2 of the auroral oval with a spatial resolution of about 10 &times; 10 km for each polar flight.In order to reduce the influence of dayglow&nbsp;on SSUSI image data, we only use data from October to December 2004 to 2006 for the study of substorm detection (the aurora oval region in the northern hemisphere during this period is in the polar night region, and the aurora image is weakly affected by dayglow and solar light).<br> The zip file SSUSIdata_mat contains two folders, the plain folder contains the data without the westbound surge structure and the wts folder contains the files with the westbound surge structure.</p>

Evolutionary history and analysis of iridescent ultraviolet butterfly scales

<p>Iridescent ultraviolet (IUV) patterns on pierid butterfly wings are phenotypic adaptations commonly used as sexual signals, generated by scales with ultrastructural modifications. Pierid IUV patterns are sexually dichromatic, with reduced size in females, where conspicuous sexual signaling balances courtship against ecological predation. There have been no phylogenetic reconstructions of IUV within Pieridae and little morphological characterization of phenotypic diversity. Our genus-wide characterization of IUV revealed the uniform similarity of stacked lamellar ridges on the dorsal surface of cover scales. We tested a hypothesis of single versus multiple origins by reconstructing a phylogeny of 534 species (~43.2% described species), with all genera represented, and a trait matrix of 734 species (~59.4%) screened for IUV. A single, early dimorphic origin of IUV followed by several losses and gains received strong support, concluding that IUV patterns and structural coloration are old traits. Collectively, these results support the homology of IUV scales and patterns that diversified within several lineages, suggesting an interplay between female-mediated sexual selection and ecological predatory selection.</p>
