Figure 1 - Figure 1. Camel's Hump seen from the east. The Monroe Trail ascends to the cliffs and passes seeps, then crosses the Alpine Trail and ends at the Hut Clearing. The Long Trail follows the ridge line and goes up over the summit. The Dean Trail branches from the Monroe Trail and passes the Beaver Pond and reaches the Wind Gap nearby. The Little Bog is toward the northern end of the less-traveled Alpine Trail which provides access to some open rocky treeless areas (Basque Ledges) above the east cliffs and is a bad weather bypass around the summit. The Seeps may provide limited habitat for certain black flies (Simuliidae). Lower right inset shows the canopy trap in Hut Clearing as Ross Bell saw it in 1972. Lower left is a view of the Hut Clearing with canopy trap seen from near the summit with I-89 about 11 km away and no evidence of cliffs from here.

CMS: Tree Canopy Cover at 0.5-meter resolution, Vermont, 2016

This dataset contains estimates of tree canopy cover presence at high resolution (0.5m) across the state of Vermont for 2016 in Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF (*.tif) format. Tree canopy was derived from 2016 high-resolution remotely sensed data as part of the Vermont High-Resolution Land Cover mapping project. Object-based image analysis techniques (OBIA) were employed to extract potential tree canopy and trees using the best available remotely sensed and vector GIS datasets. OBIA systems work by grouping pixels into meaningful objects based on their spectral and spatial properties, while taking into account boundaries imposed by existing vector datasets. Within the OBIA environment a rule-based expert system was designed to effectively mimic the process of manual image analysis by incorporating the elements of image interpretation (color/tone, texture, pattern, location, size, and shape) into the classification process. A series of morphological procedures were employed to ensure that the end product is both accurate and cartographically pleasing. Following the automated OBIA mapping a detailed manual review of the dataset was carried out at a scale of 1:3000 and all observable errors were corrected. Tree canopy assessments have been conducted for numerous communities throughout the U.S. where the results have been instrumental in helping to establish tree canopy goals.

Seasonal frost penetration, Sleepers River Research Watershed, Vermont, USA, Version 1

The frost tube network is located within a 3.25-square-mile sub-watershed of the Sleepers River Research Watershed near Danville, Vermont, USA. Tubes were positioned in forested and non-forested cover types. The forest cover includes beech, birch, maple hardwoods with a 7% slope and 240 degree aspect, mixed conifer (spruce and balsam) and hardwoods with a 3% slope and 240 degree aspect, and coniferous forest with a 3% slope and 240 degree aspect. The open areas include two large non-cultivated agricultural fields (with approximate 5% slopes and aspects of 240 and 15 degrees) and a small heavily instrumented opening. Site data were generally recorded weekly. Snow depth was measured with a metal meter ruler while frost readings were measured from a plastic tube filled with methylene blue dye suspended in a PVC outer tube. Data cover winter seasons 1983-84 to 1992-93 only. These data are presented on the CAPS Version 1.0 CD-ROM, June 1998.

Soil temperatures at South Royalton, Vermont, USA, Version 1

This data set presents half-hourly measurements of soil temperatures at depths of 0 to 60 cm, together with meteorological data (air temperature, precipitation, pressure, relative humidity, wind speed/direction, solar radiation, longwave radiation) and snow depth. The data were collected in sandy loam soil at South Royalton, Vermont, between October 1989 and September 1993. The data document seasonal changes in soil temperature, including the development of a frozen layer and occasionally a transient thawed layer at the surface. Data are available via ftp.
