Surface Elevation Table Lagoon Data for Wachapregue marshes and north Mockhorn Island of the Virginia Coast Reserve 2002-2014

Dataset consists of a subset of all the USGS-sponsored data collected using the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center "old style" SET arm, which began in Fall 1998. Because of changes made to the type of pins used (switched from brass pins to fiberglass in 2002), we present only the post-2002 data here. Each datum under "ELEVTN" variable is the mean SET elevation measured from 36 pins. In the Wachapreague marshes, three high marsh sites (short form Spartina alterniflora) were selected (Curlew Bay 1 (East)HM, Curlew Bay 2 (West)HM, and Gates BayHM), and three low-mid marsh sites (tall form Spartina) as well (same names, except MM as a suffix). About 20 miles south, at the north end of the Mockhorn Island Wildlife Management Area (state owned), only two low-mid marsh sites were selected - Mockhorn East and West.  The dataset does not include elevations taken at unvegetated "pond" sites as measurements were curtailed after 2003.Â

Modeled Wind Fetch for the Bays of the Virginia Coast Reserve

Wind fetch in meters was estimated for the bays along the Virginia portion of the Delmarva Peninsula. Wind fetches in this model were calculated in ArcGIS 9.2, using scripts designed by David Finlayson, USGS, Pacific Science Center (Rohweder et al. 2008. Application of Wind Fetch and Wave Models for Habitat Rehabilitation and Enhancement Projects. USGS Open-File Report 2008-1200). Individual raster data layers were produced for each 10-degree increment in angle, from 0 through 350 degrees. Each layer contains the fetch distance in meters for each pixel (when unbounded, negative values were used). To estimate the mean fetch during the summers of 2014 and 2015, a mean fetch layer was estimated using the proportion of time wind originated from each of the 10-degree increments as weights. Wind direction frequency came from the Wachapreague NOAA station. This work was completed as part of a Distinguished Major undergraduate thesis by Marnie R. Kremer, supervised by Matthew Reidenbach.

Bird observations on the tidal flats of the Virginia Coast Reserve, 2016-2018

This dataset contains data on observations of birds on tidal flats along the Virginia portion of the Delmarva Peninsula, along the Atlantic side as part of the dissertation research of Alice Besterman. The first data table (ShorebirdswithZerosV1a.csv) has summary information on bird activities broken down by patch type and relation to tide. Shorebirds were surveyed on 9 intertidal mudflats from late April through end of May 2016. Surveys conducted within 3-5 hours of low tide. Scans last 15 minutes or less. Data table 2 (2018_patchscale_long.csv) contains data from surveys of shorebirds on 36 intertidal mudflats. Surveys conducted in May 2018 at low tide. Tidal flats were visited a single time, and scanned a single time. Scans lasted 15 minutes or less. Only target species were counted and microhabitat-use was recorded. A "wide" version of the data with columns of species/cover is also provided as a .zip file. Data table 3 (ContinSampFinala.csv) contains data collected during focal behavioral observations of shorebirds on intertidal mudflats. Data were collected from 9 sites in 2016 between late April and the end of May during low tide. Observations lasted up to 3 minutes or less if observer lost sight of the bird or bird left the site. Data table 4 (allbirds2a.csv) contains surveys of shorebirds using mudflats in May 2018. Sites were visited a single time during low tide. Tidal flats were scanned a single time, and scans lasted 15 minutes or less. This data table differs from Data table 2 in that all shorebird species of interest were counted (not just target species for behavioral analyses), and microhabitat-use data were not included. Data table 5 (InstantSampFinala.csv) contains data collected during focal behavioral observations of shorebirds on intertidal mudflats. Data were collected from 9 sites in 2016 between late April and the end of May during low tide. Observations lasted up to 3 minutes or less if observer lost sight of the bird or bird left the site.

The columns are: map: base map number (i.e., the map number that Dolan/Hayden used for their rectangular blocks of coastline) trans: transect number from south to north for that map The remaining columns refer to a point on the transect at which there is a transition between vegetation communities (as defined by McCaffrey and digitized by LTER): utm1: first utm co-ord for transition point utm2: second utm co-ord for transition point unit: unit number for the vegetation community type that we are moving INTO. We are moving along the transect from the sea side to the mainland side of the island. The unit numbers are the numbers that you used when digitizing the map. For example, note that the first observation for every transect has unit number 7 since this is the number for sand. Ground Water Levels on a Parramore Pimple on the Virginia Coast Reserve 1995-1997

This data was collected between 1995 and 1997 on the water "injection" pimple on Parramore Island. Note that during the period of record no actual injections were made. This data is designed to be used for the pre-injection period of the experiment. Data was collected using a digital Leopold and Stevens portable recording station (Model 420 Level Logger with a SDT-II pressure transducer, with a total range of 3.048 meters). The data fall into two periods. From April 15, 1995 to March 14, 1996 and October 18, 1996 through May 8, 1997. During the period between these measurement periods the well was deepened to reduce the number of 0 readings. Thus, the depth data for the different times should be interpreted differently. To aid in interpretation of the data, along with the water level information, tide and precipitation data is also supplied. This data comes from other VCR/LTER datasets (VCR97053 - Tide Data for Hog Island (1991-), Redbank (1992-). 12 minute interval and VCR97018 - Hourly Meteorological Data for the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER). See those datasets for documentation on methods of measurement etc.

Muskrat Lodge Locations near transect 1 on northern Hog Island of the Virginia Coast Reserve 2005-2015

Locations of lodges of muskrats near Transect 1 on the northern end of Hog Island in May 2005 and repeated in May 2007, April 2009, May 2011, April 2013 and March 2015. In April 2009 no active muskrat lodges were observed from Transect 1. The remains of two lodges were observed, but they were less than 20 cm in height, had vegetation growing out of them, and showed no sign of activity, so they were not surveyed. Similarly in April 2011 a survey yielded no lodges. So for 2009 and 2011 GIS files were not created, because they would not have contained any points. In 2013 and 2015 one and three lodges were observed, respectively. Data collection was ceased after 2015, when the spread of Phragmites decreased visibility along the open areas of the transect to a few meters, making it impossible to detect lodges adjacent to the transect. Comments in the attribute tables in the layers contains information on the diameter and height(in decimeters or meters) of lodges.

The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Virginia Coast Reserve (VCR) contains county area measurements in squareKilometers units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.
