Data for: Curbing global solid waste emissions toward net-zero warming futures
<p>No global analysis has considered the warming that could be averted through improved solid waste management and how much that could contribute to meeting the Paris Agreement's 1.5° and 2°C pathway goals or the terms of the Global Methane Pledge. With our estimated global solid waste generation of 2.56 to 3.33 billion tonnes by 2050, implementing abrupt technical and behavioral changes could result in a net-zero warming solid waste system relative to 2020, leading to 11 to 27 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide warming–equivalent emissions under the temperature limits. These changes, however, require accelerated adoption within 9 to 17 years (by 2033 to 2041) to align with the Global Methane Pledge. Rapidly reducing methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide emissions is necessary to maximize the short-term climate benefits and stop the ongoing temperature rise.</p>

POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA: A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT
<p>Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) serves as a tool to estimate the potential impacts of a waste management system. Sleman Regency needs a scenario of waste management with a lower environmental impact. The present study aims to determine the potential impact of the existing business as usual (BAU) waste management practice in Sleman Regency and compare it with several alternatives to waste management strategies. The LCA method was applied following ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. The impact was assessed using the CML-1A Baseline and ILCD 2011 Midpoint+ methods, along with data from the Ecoinvent database. In the BAU scenario, the impact values observed in every 1 ton of waste managed were Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 4.90E+03 kg CO2 eq, Acidification Potential (ADP) of 2.78E-03 kg SO2 eq, Eutrophication Potential (EP) of 4.92E-02 kg PO4-eq, Human Toxicity Potential (HTP) of 2.06E+01 kg 1.4 DB eq, and Land Use Potential (LUP) of 4.71E+01 kg C deficit. Processing waste into biomass pellets and Refuse Derived Fuel accompanied by waste reduction could decrease the GWP value to 34.04 kg CO2 eq, ADP to 2.96E-06 kg SO2 eq, EP to 7.33E-05 kg PO4-eq, HTP to 3.70E-04 kg 1.4 DB eq, and LUP to 2.11E-03 kg C deficit. The results of waste management with the lowest impact value can serve as a reference for formulating waste management policies in the study area.</p>
Use of infrared spectroscopy for a sampling study of waste wood samples in a panel board industry

Due to the pandemic situation the Italian Society for Near Infrared Spectroscopy (SISNIR), in collaboration with the InnoRenew CoE and University of Primorska, has decided to organize an online National Symposium of NIR Spectroscopy, waiting for the opportunity to meet physically next year. </p> <p>The event is an important opportunity to virtually present works, and exchange ideas, opinions and future perspectives. This presentation perfectly fits with theme of NIR spectroscopy. Indeed, the presentation is about the use of NIR spectroscopy for assessing the best sampling procedure in order to describe a really heterogeneous material as waste wood is. </p>
Characterisations, yield and purity rates on Light Packagin Waste Sorting
<p>One of the objectives of the Plasticircle project has been to improve the sorting of post consumer packaging. Near Infrared (NIR) sorting is used commonly in the waste industry to recover materials of value from mixed streams. A high level review of the waste composition in the three pilot cities has been carried out, along with specification of the sorted product requirements and an initial study into the sorting efficiency of the PICVISA NIR unit. Present attached documents report results of the sorting performance on the waste streams coming from the project. </p>
LCC - Datasets for PlastiCircle Economic Evaluation of the Light Packaging Waste Management
<p>These datasets are related to deliverable 7.4 which presents the results from the economic assessment for the waste management systems evaluation of the city pilots and converter industries.</p> <p>PlastiCircle technologies allowed higher collection of plastic packaging and better input quality which might result in an increased market demand achieving the European recycling objectives. The higher volumes collected cause higher management costs which are compensated by higher remuneration from the PRO. The higher recovery resulted in higher recycling costs which are offset by higher revenues from sales. The evaluation of the industrial case studies indicates that the profitability of the production of industrial products using recycled post-consumer plastics is dependent of the market prices and the stability of the supply.</p>
S-LCA - Datasets for PlastiCircle Social Evaluation of the Light Packaging Waste Management (stakeholder perpectives)
<p>This deliverable (7.5) presents S-LCA results for the waste management systems in Valencia (Spain), Utrecht (Netherland) and Alba Iulia (Romania). Moreover, an extrapolation of the results has been calculated to show the results on the European level.</p> <p>Data is collected from groups of citizens, citizens associations, waste managers and municipalities (city hall workers).</p> <p>Questionnaires have been done in order to ask this groups of people questions to assess the social impact of the waste management systems in each city.</p> <p>Questions have been prepared according to the guidelines for social life cycle assessment of products - UNEP DTIE.</p>
LCA - Datasets for PlastiCircle Environmental Evaluation of the Light Packaging Waste Management
<p><strong>Datasets presented are related to Delievrable 7.3 - LCA.</strong></p> <p>To structure the environmental assessment, cities and industries are treated separately. The three pilot cities evaluated in PlastiCircle are:<br> 1. Valencia 2. Utrecht 3. Alba Iulia</p> <p><br> Within the project several technologies and strategies have been developed to improve the waste management of the pilot cities and other aspects in the value chain. Main developments spin around (a) citizens identification through a labelling system integrated on the container on a PAYT basis; (b) route optimization based on filling level sensors integrated on the container and corresponding algorithms for the optimization; (c) Eco-driving app to monitor the transport parameters and suggest efficient driving to the drivers. Moreover, on the sorting stage (d) PICVISA developed different improvement on their sorting equipment to enhance yield and purity on extracted fractions, and as well, a mechanical module to improve film recovery was developed. All these conditions have been evaluated on this report, focusing on the following sections:<br> 1. Collection – Impact of PAYT system on the pilot and quality segregation and IoT infrastructure.<br> 2. Transport – Impact of route optimization and efficient driving<br> 3. Sorting – Impact from yield and purity improvements and development of turbosorter</p> <p><br> For the sorting stage a model has been designed for each pilot waste recycling plant, focusing on the energy used per tonne, the yield of each fraction on the plant and the input waste as main parameters, inter alia.</p> <p>As a bridge between the cities and the final converters, there is a need of a proper pre-treatment/ conditioning of the post-consumer polymer to provide quality standard feedstock to the industries. PlastiCircle, lacks a partner on the consortium undertaking these tasks on an industrial level, however, different lab scale trials and some trials with Sorema have been assessed during the project, also considering broken down processes to evaluate impact on these intermediate stages taking into consideration processes such as the ones used by European industries as Sorema or Herbold, and other processes extracted from literature and commercial solutions:<br> 4. Washing/Pre-treatment – Impact on the pre-conditioning for plastic packaging bales.</p> <p><br> Once plastic is ready as flakes or pellets forms, industries within the project use those recycled plastic as raw materials to manufacture their products. Their different processes have been defined analysed, performing specific LCA for each one of their results considering the trials and impacts from the developments done during the project.</p> <p>Attached datasets used for the LCA models in PlastiCircle can be found.</p>

Chronic wasting disease alters the movement behavior and habitat use of mule deer during clinical stages of infection
<p>Integrating host movement and pathogen data is a central issue in wildlife disease ecology that will allow for a better understanding of disease transmission. We examined how adult female mule deer (<em>Odocoileus hemionus</em>) responded behaviorally to infection with chronic wasting disease (CWD). We compared movement and habitat use of CWD-infected deer (<em>n</em> = 18) to those that succumbed to starvation (and were CWD-negative by ELISA and IHC; <em>n</em> = 8) and others in which CWD was not detected (<em>n</em> = 111, including animals that survived the duration of the study) using GPS collar data from two distinct populations collared in central Wyoming, USA during 2018–2022. CWD and predation were the leading causes of mortality during our study (32 of 91 deaths attributed to CWD and 27 of 91 deaths attributed to predation). Deer infected with CWD moved slower and used lower elevation areas closer to rivers in the months preceding death compared with uninfected deer that did not succumb to starvation. Although CWD-infected deer and those that died of starvation moved at similar speeds during the final months of life, CWD-infected deer used areas closer to streams with less herbaceous biomass than deer that died of starvation. These behavioral differences may allow for the development of predictive models of disease status from movement data, which will be useful to supplement field and laboratory diagnostics or when mortalities cannot be quickly retrieved to assess cause-specific mortality. Furthermore, identifying individuals that are sick before predation events could help to assess the extent to which disease mortality is compensatory with predation. Finally, infected animals began to slow down around four months prior to death from CWD. Our approach for detecting the timing of infection-induced shifts in movement behavior may be useful in application to other disease systems to better understand the response of wildlife to infectious disease.</p>
