Major changes in fish thermal habitat diversity in Canada's Arctic lakes due to climate change

Climate warming is a major disruptor of fish community structure globally. We use large-scale geospatial analyses of 447,077 Canadian Arctic lakes to predict how climate change would impact lake thermal habitat diversity across the Arctic landscape. Increases in maximum surface temperature (+2.4–6.7 °C), ice-free period (+14–38 days), and thermal stratification presence (+4.2–18.9%) occur under all climate scenarios. Lakes, currently fishless due to deep winter ice, open up; many thermally uniform lakes become thermally diverse. Resilient coldwater habitat supply is predicted; however, thermally diverse lakes shift from providing almost exclusively coldwater habitat to providing substantial coolwater habitat and previously absent warmwater habitat. Across terrestrial ecozones, most lakes exhibit major shifts in thermal habitat. The prevalence of thermally diverse lakes more than doubles, providing refuge for coldwater taxa. Ecozone-specific differences in the distribution of thermally diverse and thermally uniform lakes require different management strategies for adapting fish resource use to climate change.

PAH concentrations in the Fram Strait, the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and the lower Great Lakes

The PEs were deployed at different water depths of deep moorings deployed in the Fram Strait during 2014-2015 (9 samples) and 2018-2019 (22 samples), as well as in surface seawater of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (6 samples), and in the air (6 samples) and surface water (3 samples) of the lower Great Lakes during 2018-2019. For atmospheric sampling, PEs have deployed at ~1-2 m height and fixed inside two inverted bowls to prevent rainfall and direct solar radiation. For water sampling, PEs were strung on stainless steel wires and attached to stainless steel cages. The surface-water cages were fixed to subsurface floats at ~4-5 m depth, while the deep-water cages were fastened to deep moorings at different depths for ~1 year. PAH concentration data were collected.

Supporting information for "Zhang, L., Ma, Y., Vojta, S., Morales-McDevitt, M., Hoppmann, M., Soltwedel, T., et al. Arctic PASSION Online Seminar on "Lake Ice Information in Your Pocket"

Arctic PASSION Online Seminar on "Lake Ice Information in Your Pocket"

10 November 1 PM GMT

Get to know the Lake Ice Service tool for your pocket, listen to the current status of its development as well as our future steps towards the expanded service. The Lake Ice Service collects lake ice information from multiple sources and visualizes the information in an easily accessible and understandable format website map tool. These information are generated by satellite data, governmental in situ networks as well as Community-Based Monitoring. Among other things, lake ice information is important for our understanding of ice-related changes and climate change. Lake ice is sensitive to intra-annual temperature fluctuations and long-term temperature trends. Beside the climate change aspect, lake ice data are important for transport, arctic livelihood, and safety issues. The information will be useful for citizens and local communities as well as for scientific purposes. The development of the Lake Ice Service is part of the Arctic PASSION project and will be further extended and co-designed in cooperation with users.

Speakers:

Kirsikka Heinilä (Senior research scientist at the Finnish Environment Institute/Arctic PASSION)

Timo Pyhälahti (Senior expert at the Finnish Environment Institute/Arctic PASSION)

Moderation: Lisa Grosfeld (Project Manager at the Alfred Wegener Institute/Arctic PASSION), Oda Mulelid (GRID-Arendal/Arctic PASSION)

Webinar recording: https://youtu.be/_g097u4MsD8

Related links:

Check the current version of TARKKA + here: https://testbed.ymparisto.fi/eo-tarkka/. Total numbers per square meter and taxa of insects taken during a survey of headwater streams in the Toolik Lake region during the summer of 2001, Arctic LTER 2001.

A Surber sampler (25 X 25 cm frame fitted with a 243 um mesh net) was used to sample invertebrates on a single date at each site. Five replicates were taken from at least two riffles at each site. Samples were preserved in 4% formaldehyde and transported to Orono, Maine, where invertebrates were removed by hand under 15X magnification and then identified and counted. All values are the mean of five replicates and have been converted to individuals per square meter.
