<p>Dataset supporting publication: Presentation of GEOFIT at the <a href="https://www.hp-summit.de/en">European Heat Pump Summit</a> (2019) </p> <p>Available for download: <a href="https://zenodo.org/record/3901527">GEOFIT Zenodo</a></p> <p>The integration of geothermal systems for heating / cooling solutions in conjunction with heat pump technology is a major challenge, particularly in the case of renovation. In order to find the best solution for the increased flow temperatures compared to a new building for the renovation, various heat pump configurations are evaluated according to energy and economic criteria. A refrigerant with low greenhouse gas potential (GWP) is used as the working medium, e.g. R1234ze (E)) less than 10 used. A favorable refrigeration circuit configuration for high flow temperatures is a twin-circuit system, which essentially consists of two heat pumps with different condensing temperatures and the same evaporation temperatures. An alternative to this is a single-stage configuration with a significantly larger condenser for improved supercooling. Both systems should enable efficient operation when renovating buildings.</p>

Building thermal and electrical energy hourly time series
<p>The results reported are the <strong>hourly thermal and electrical energy use</strong> for one year of a renovated five-floor small Multi-Family house with ten dwellings in different EU climates.</p> <p>A simulation-based database organized in Excel files (one per each climate) collects the hourly thermal and electrical energy use in the considered reference building (a small Multi-Family house) in three EU climates: Nordic, EU Continental, and Mediterranean considering the HVAC system solution with room booster heat pumps (HPs) developed within Horizon 2020 HAPPENING project and two reference systems. </p> <p>The building, HVAC and on-site renewable energy production systems are modeled and simulated using TRNSYS as dynamic simulation software. </p> <p>The fact that this simulation work is performed in different EU climates allows to extrapolate indications about how the HVAC system solutions work in different EU climatic contexts.</p> <p>Regarding the <strong>building</strong>, a small Multi-Family house is considered as it represents the target building for the HP-base solutions developed within the HAPPENING project. The building has five floors with two dwellings per floor with a floor area of 50 m<sup>2</sup> each, for a total floor area of 500 m<sup>2</sup>. In terms of thermal envelope performance, a renovated building has been considered, with a yearly space heating thermal demand in the range of 70 kWh/m<sup>2</sup>/y in the Nordic and EU Continental climates.</p> <p>Regarding the <strong>HVAC system</strong> solutions, the dataset reports the results obtained considering the cascade HP-based solution with room booster HPs developed in the project HAPPENING. In addition to that, a typical (reference) air-water HP system, and a gas boiler system are used as reference systems to assess and compare the HAPPENING system solution performance.</p> <p>Regarding the <strong>on-site renewable energy production system</strong>, a PV plant has been considered. The presence of an electric battery is also accounted for to allow a more complete assessment of the interactions between on-site renewable production and HVAC system consumption, highlighting the effects, advantages, and disadvantages of having also an electric storage. The PV and battery system is considered in all HVAC system solutions (HAPPENING solution, reference air-water HP system, gas boiler system) to highlight the differences in the interactions between different HVAC system solutions with PV and battery.</p> <p>The project deliverable D2.7, available in the material, reports more details about all the quantities included in the dataset, as well as a series of system performance analyses, both over representative weeks and on a yearly basis.</p> <p> </p> <p>The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community's Horizon 2020 Programme (H2020) under grant agreement n° 957007.</p>

<p>Dataset supporting publication:“Environmental sustainability and Energy Efficiency in Historical Buildings: GeoFit Project Implementation in the Case Study of a medieval fortress in Perugia” (publication available for download: <a href="https://zenodo.org/record/7435513">GEOFIT Zenodo</a>)</p> <p>Italian cities are mainly constituted by buildings constructed until the mid-20th century by pre-industrial construction techniques. A HVAC system for the energy retrofit of historical buildings is evaluated when applied in the case study of Sant’Apollinare. It consists of a ground source heat pump a water tank for thermal energy storage connected to a low-temperature radiant system and air handling unit. The building thermal-energy behavior, typically influenced by thermal inertia in historical buildings, and the novel HVAC system performance interactions are comparatively assessed together with more traditional scenarios. Energy demand decreases by about one third compared to the pre-retrofit situation.</p>

Weather dataset (Typical Downscaled Year, Extreme Cold Year, Extreme Warm Year) for building energy simulations (.epw format) in future climate (2069-2098, RCP 8.5), Kortrijk Kennedy Park, Belgium
<p>Typical Downscaled Year (TDY), Extreme Cold Year and Extreme Warm Year based on the methodology of Nik (2016), is extracted for the location of Kortrijk Kenny Park (50° 48' 2"N 3°16'13" E) from the EC-Earth driven convection-permitting climate model COSMO-CLM for the Belgian domain extended with land-surface scheme TERRA_URB(v2.0) making use of the SURY (Semi-empirical URban canopY) parameterization ( Wouters et al. 2016). The integrations are identical to the ones which are described in Vanden Broucke et al. (2019). The climate model has a spatial resolution of 2.8 km and an hourly temporal resolution and is available for the recent past (1976-2004) and future (2070-2098, RCP 8.5 climate change scenario) as 30-year datasets. For this dataset, the TDY, ECY, and EWY are extracted for the future period. A bias correction is applied for the following variables: temperature (as described in Ramon et al. 2020), solar radiation and relative humidity as described in Ramon et al. (202X).</p>
