Data from: The socially mediated recovery of a fearful fish paired with periodically replaced calm models

Social learning is an important mechanism for acquiring knowledge about environmental risk. However, little work has explored the learning of safety and how such learning outcomes are shaped by the social environment. Here, we exposed minnows, Pimephales promelas, to a high-risk environment to induce behavioral responses associated with fear (e.g., neophobia). We then used the presence of calm conspecific models (low-risk individuals) to weaken these responses. When observers (individuals from the high-risk environment) and models were paired consistently in a one-on-one setting, the observers showed no recovery (i.e., no weakening of the fear responses), and instead the models indirectly acquired those responses (i.e., a socially-transmitted state of fear). However, observers paired with models that were periodically replaced with new calm models showed a significant recovery, and each new model showed diminished socially-transmitted fear. We argue that our understanding of predation-related fear and social information transfer can prove fruitful in understanding problems with fear and stress across animal taxa, including among humans who experience post-traumatic stress and secondary trauma. Our findings indicate that the periodic replacement of models can promote fear recovery in observers and reduce socially-transmitted fear in models.

Pink salmon distribution in Sweden: the calm before the storm?

Pink salmon distribution has recently expanded substantially across northern Europe. On the Swedish west coast, relatively few pink salmon have been observed to date, nonetheless a notable rise in 2021 (70 observations). However, with no national monitoring together with a ceased Atlantic salmon commercial fishery, there is little opportunity to understand the extent of the spread in this region. Here we present the current data and address the need for future monitoring and research in order to understand the potential impacts of this invasive species in Sweden's aquatic ecosystems.

Town of Ennis traffic calming project August - October 2020

The Western Transporation Institute in partnership with the Town of Ennis and the Montana Department of Transportation conducted a temporary traffic calming project on Main Street in Ennis, MT. The project was installed on August 3rd and was removed on October 19th. The traffic calming included the use of curb extensions, road diets, crosswalks, and restriping to simulate a reconstruction project. The goal of the project was to improve safety for pedestrians along and crossing Main St. Pre-installation data collection was conducted between July 24th and July 30th and post-installation data collection was conducted between September 3rd and September 8th. Speed & volume data, pedestrian counts, and driver yielding rates data were all collected before and after the installation of the traffic calming to determine any impact on these indicators. In addition, a community survey was created in partnership with the Town of Ennis to get feedback from community members and visitors about the project, it's perception, and perceived impact.
