Network of reference tree-ring chronologies for forensic botanical (dendrochronological) examinations and dating of architectural structures in the Tyva Republic.
<p>The database consists of tables. First sheet - general description of tree-ring chronologies (general information: name of chronology, authors, data type, tree-ring parameter, notes, key words; description of sample collection site: site name, location, region, latitude, longitude, height; description of sample collection: collection code designation, number of series, year of first ring, year of last ring, maximum length of sample, average width of year ring; species affiliation - species; support - grant number). Second sheet, first column - years, second column - standardized growth value. The third sheet is a PDF document containing the results of independent testing in the program COFECA (the file is opened by the command: right-click/Acrobat Document object/open). The database is implemented in the OpenOffice.org Calc spreadsheet processor. The table file format is an internal OpenOffice.org Calc format, with the extension .ods. The data is accessed and structured using the standard tools "Sort", "Autofilter", etc. In the database, the integrity restriction control is not implemented, the user is invited to monitor the integrity of the database himself. Tree-ring width chronologies of subfossil oak from Seda River, Latvia
<p>The dataset includes six mean curves/chronologies of subfossil oak from Seda River, northern Latvia. Series No. 1-5 were radiocarbon dated and the chronology No. 6 was absolute dated against chronologies from the Baltic region or Baltic timber imported to the Western Europe.</p>

Standardized ring-width chronologies for white and black spruce at three sites in the southern Brooks Range, Alaska
Although black spruce is the dominant treeline species in the eastern boreal forest, its distribution stops several kilometers short of treeline in the Brooks Range in Alaska, and white spruce is the dominant treeline species. The explanation for this distribution is not known, but two hypotheses are plausible. First, black spruce may be less tolerant of climatic conditions near treeline than white spruce. Second, black spruce may be unable to regenerate successfully near treeline due to long intervals between fires. We are establishing permanently marked study plots along a transect from the Yukon River basin, where black spruce is the dominant species, to the foothills of the Brooks Range, where it reaches its distributional limit. We are reconstructing recruitment history of both black and white spruce at our study sites, and are reconstructing recent fire history from analysis of fire scars and stand age structures. These data are being used to parameterize matrix population models, with which we are describing patterns of population stability.
Data from: A novel method to analyze social transmission in chronologically sequenced assemblages, implemented on cultural inheritance of the art of cooking
Here we present an analytical technique for the measurement and evaluation of changes in chronologically sequenced assemblages. To illustrate the method, we studied the cultural evolution of European cooking as revealed in seven cook books dispersed over the past 800 years. We investigated if changes in the set of commonly used ingredients were mainly gradual or subject to fashion fluctuations. Applying our method to the data from the cook books revealed that overall, there is a clear continuity in cooking over the ages – cooking is knowledge that is passed down through generations, not something (re-)invented by each generation on its own. Looking at three main categories of ingredients separately (spices, animal products and vegetables), however, disclosed that all ingredients do not change according to the same pattern. While choice of animal products was very conservative, changing completely sequentially, changes in the choices of spices, but also of vegetables, were more unbounded. We hypothesize that this may be due a combination of fashion fluctuations and changes in availability due to contact with the Americas during our study time period. The presented method is also usable on other assemblage type data, and can thus be of utility for analyzing sequential archaeological data from the same area or other similarly organized material.
Indexed tree-ring oak chronologies from Vitsebsk region, Belarus
<p>The dataset includes two indexed tree-ring oak chronologies which combines subfossil wood (Luchosa river), wood from Polotsk Saviour's Transfiguration Church, and wood from archaeological excavations in Vitsebsk and Polotsk (Northern Belarus). Both chronologies were absolute dated against chronologies from the neighboring regions as well as Baltic timber imported to the Western Europe (Baltic 1, 2, 3 chronologies).</p>

Late Pleistocene stickleback environmental genomes reveal the chronology of freshwater adaptation
<p>Directly observing the chronology and tempo of adaptation in response to ecological change is rarely possible in natural ecosystems. Sedimentary aDNA (sedaDNA) has been shown to be a tractable source of genome-scale data of long-dead organisms, and to thereby potentially provide an understanding of the evolutionary histories of past populations. To date, time series of ecosystem biodiversity have been reconstructed from sedaDNA, typically using DNA metabarcoding or shotgun sequence data generated from less than one gram of sediment. Here we maximise sequence coverage by extracting DNA from ~50x more sediment per sample than the majority of previous studies, to achieve genotype resolution. From a time-series of Late Pleistocene sediments spanning from a marine to freshwater ecosystem, we compare adaptive genotypes reconstructed from the environmental genomes of threespine stickleback at key time points of this transition. We find a staggered temporal dynamic, in which freshwater alleles at known loci of large effect in marine-freshwater divergence of threespine stickleback (e.g. <em>EDA</em>) were already established during the brackish phase of the formation of the isolation basin. Yet marine alleles were still detected across the majority of marine-freshwater divergence associated loci, even after the complete isolation of the lake from marine ingression. Our retrospective approach to studying adaptation from environmental genomes of threespine sticklebacks at the end of the last glacial period complements contemporary experimental approaches and highlights the untapped potential for retrospective 'evolve-and-resequence' natural experiments using sedaDNA.</p>
