Coarse Woody Debris on Watershed 6, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest
Fallen dead wood was sampled in Watershed 6 (W6) of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in 1978, 1995, and 2016. Two techniques, one for bolewood >3 cm in diameter and one for fallen twigs <3 cm and > 2 mm, were combined to determine the mass of fallen dead wood in the forest. The mass of deadwood in the forest remained unchanged over time, although the species composition did change. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Data from: Decomposition of coarse woody debris in a long-term litter manipulation experiment: a focus on nutrient availability
1.The majority of aboveground carbon in tropical forests is stored in wood, which is returned to the atmosphere during decomposition of coarse woody debris. However, the factors controlling wood decomposition have not been experimentally manipulated over time scales comparable to the length of this process. 2.We hypothesized that wood decomposition is limited by nutrient availability and tested this hypothesis in a long-term litter addition and removal experiment in a lowland tropical forest in Panama. Specifically, we quantified decomposition using a 15 year chronosequence of decaying boles, and measured respiration rates and nutrient limitation of wood decomposer communities. 3.The long-term probability that a dead tree completely decomposed was decreased in plots where litter was removed, but did not differ between litter addition and control treatments. Similarly, respiration rates of wood decomposer communities were greater in control treatments relative to litter removal plots; litter addition treatments did not differ from either of the other treatments. Respiration rates increased in response to nutrient addition (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) in the litter removal and addition treatments, but not in the controls. 4.Established decreases in concentrations of soil nutrients in litter removal plots and increased respiration rates in response to nutrient addition suggest that reduced rates of wood decomposition after litter removal were caused by decreased nutrient availability. The effects of litter manipulations differed directionally from a previous short-term decomposition study in the same plots, and reduced rates of bole decomposition in litter removal plots did not emerge until after more than 6 years of decomposition. These differences suggest that litter-mediated effects on nutrient dynamics have complex interactions with decomposition over time.

Tree regeneration on coarse woody debris (CWD) is considered to be one the most ecologically valuable aspects of CWD in forest systems. However, most studies have focused solely on uncovering the differences in establishment and growth on CWD (regarded as a homogeneous substrate) in comparison with the forest floor. Our study concentrates on the underlying mechanisms of germinant and seedling colonization patterns and demographic responses relative to various properties of CWD. We analysed the effects of CWD properties (decay class, form, species and diameter) on: (i) germinant and seedling annual counts; (ii) annual germinant and seedling survival; and (iii) seedling growth and height. Our study comprised three species (beech, fir and spruce) over 7-year span in two old-growth stands in the Western Carpathians, and employed generalized linear models and mixed models to test for differences between species. CWD properties affected regeneration at the germination stage. There were some demographic differences between species relative to CWD properties. Decay class had the most pronounced effect on beech, not only on its establishment but also survival and growth. Beech and spruce established and survived in higher densities on beech CWD, while their height growth was enhanced on conifer-derived CWD, particularly on spruce CWD. Stumps enhanced establishment of all species and survival of conifer seedlings. Synthesis. Our study shows that CWD properties do influence seedling establishment, growth, height distribution and survival. Moreover, there may be trade-offs between seedling growth and survival among tree species growing on different species of CWD. This highlights the need to include CWD heterogeneity as a factor that can affect the role of CWD in regeneration in forest ecosystems.
Coarse woody debris density and carbon concentration by decay classes in mixed montane wet tropical forests (Dataset)
<p>This dataset contains data from a study considering the relationship between decay class, wood density and C content of CWD in old-growth mixed monsoon montane tropical forests in Vietnam based on the inventory of 359 CWD pieces.</p> <p>The CWD inventories were conducted on forty one (3-4 per site) 50 m long and 4 m wide transects. The first dataset for contains site description, plot and transect numbers with geographical coordinates. All CWD pieces of more than 6 cm in diameter were inventoried. The dataset contains position of CWD: stumps, standing dead trees (snags), lying logs, leaning logs and branches, diameter, proportion consumed by termites, decay class, bulk density and moisture of wood and mass loss. The second dataset contains the data on the wood density of tree species present in the study area according to the global database compiled by Zanne et al. (2009).</p>

LBA-ECO CD-10 Coarse Woody Debris Data at km 67 Tower Site, Tapajos National Forest
This data sets reports properties of fallen course woody debris in an old-growth upland forest at the Para Western (Santarem) - km 67, Primary Forest Tower Site. This site is in the Tapajos National Forest located in north central Brazil. Measurements extend from April 2001 through July 2001.Standing and Fallen coarse woody debris (CWD), or necromass were measured in a series of ecological plots at the km 67 eddy flux tower site in the Tapajos National Forest (Figure 2). The data set includes different size classes of debris measured in different plot sizes. Size classes were: 2-10cm (in 64 m2 subplots) , 10-30cm (in 1600 m2 subplots), 30cm (in 38400 m2 subplots), standing (in entire 50m by 1000m transects).
