Greater functional similarity in mobile compared to sessile assemblages colonizing artificial coastal habitats
<p><span>Among anthropogenic habitats built in the marine environment, floating and non-floating structures can be colonized by distinct assemblages. However, there is little knowledge whether these differences are also reflected in the functional structure. This study compared the functional diversity of sessile and mobile invertebrate assemblages that settle over 3 months on floating vs. non-floating artificial habitats, in two Chilean ports. Using morphological, trophic, behavioral, and life history traits, we found differences between mobile and sessile assemblages regarding the effect of the type of habitat on the functional diversity. Compared to sessile assemblages, a greater functional similarity was observed for mobile assemblages, which suggests that their dispersal capacity enables them to balance the reduced connectivity between settlement structures. No traits, prevailing or selected in one or the other habitat type, were however clearly identified; a result warranting further studies focusing on more advanced stages of community</span><span> development.</span></p>
Traits mediate environmental responses of benthic ciliates in dynamic coastal habitats
<p><strong>Aim:</strong> Understanding how species' traits mediate environmental responses provides a mechanistic perspective on community assembly processes. Although traits that influence the response of multicellular organisms to environments have been studied, the identification of such traits in unicellular organisms, like ciliates, is underexplored. Since ciliates are dominate animals at coastal sandy sediments and contribute significantly to interstitial community respiration, identifying links between their occurrence and sandy-coast characteristics is crucial for conserving biodiversity and protecting coastal habitats.</p> <p><strong>Location:</strong> Coasts of China.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> We used Hierarchical Modeling of Species Communities, a trait-based joint species distribution model, to analyze ciliate community data collected from 344 sites belonging to 31 beaches across the Chinese coastline.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> We found that physical variables play the most important role in determining ciliate occurrence. The beach index which combines the tidal range, sediment grain size and beach slope of beach selected species based on body size as well as feeding type, while sediment grain size constrained different mobility types, with swimming species favoring fine sandy sediments. The significant contribution of phylogeny in explaining the residual variation among species responses indicates that there are phylogenetically conserved but unmeasured traits too that influence species' responses. Species richness of benthic ciliates was higher in dissipative beaches with high primary productivity.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions:</strong> Based on our research, ciliate occurrence in coastal beaches is mediated by their traits which are filtered by local environmental variables. The beach index is essential in predicting distribution patterns and species richness of benthic ciliates. Nevertheless, further research is needed to identify additional traits that will enhance the accuracy of predicting ciliate niches. Our study provides insights into the mechanisms driving ciliate community assembly processes and has implications for the conservation of biodiversity in sandy coastal habitats.</p>
Database of facilitative interactions between pairs of coastal marine habitats
<p>Large-scale restoration of habitats is urgently needed to meet international calls for restoration and to reinstate the ecosystem services derived from these habitats. Coastal marine seascapes are comprised of interconnected habitats where their density, diversity and spatial distributions are shaped by the biophysical and ecological processes occurring among them. Cross-habitat facilitation, where processes generated in one habitat benefit another (e.g., wave attenuation, sediment stabilisation), naturally underpins coastal ecosystem development, resilience and expansion but restoration of coastal marine habitats has traditionally focused on single- rather than multi-habitat approaches. We identified over 2100 studies on coastal restoration, yet only 6 (0.002%) addressed restoration of multiple habitats concurrently, and just 3 explicitly aimed to harness cross-habitat facilitation. Using a systematic literature review, we then identified over 200 facilitative interactions between pairs of coastal marine habitats, but 85% of them were described on scales <1m. This database describes the spatial scale and type of facilitative processes documented between pairs of coastal marine habitat types. In order to scale-up coastal marine restoration, we need to address a key knowledge gap in understanding how processes underpinning cross-habitat facilitation operate at the spatial scales of those used in restoration.</p>

The essential habitat role of a unique coastal inlet for a widely distributed apex predator
<p>Essential habitats support specific functions for species, such as reproduction, feeding or refuge. For highly-mobile aquatic species, identifying essential habitats within the wider distribution range is central to understanding species ecology, and underpinning effective management plans. This study examined the movement and space use patterns of sevengill sharks (<em>Notorynchus cepedianus</em>) in Caleta Valdés, a unique coastal habitat in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Seasonal residency patterns of sharks were evident, with higher detectability in late spring and early summer and lower during autumn and winter. The overlap between the residency patterns of sharks and their prey, elephant seals, suggests that Caleta Valdés functions as a seasonal feeding aggregation site for <em>N. cepedianus</em>. The study also found sexual differences in movement behavior, with males performing abrupt departures from Caleta Valdés and showing increased roaming with the presence of more sharks, and maximum detection probability at high tide. These movements could be related to different feeding strategies between sexes or mate-searching behavior, suggesting that Caleta Valdés may also be essential for reproduction. Overall, this study highlights the importance of coastal sites as essential habitats for <em>N. cepedianus</em> and deepens our understanding of the ecological role of this apex predator in marine ecosystems.</p>

Coastal Habitat Restoration Survey
<p>Online expert elicitation survey of the membership of Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) and International Coral Reef Society (ICRS). Data from: Phytoplankton community interactions and environmental sensitivity in coastal and offshore habitats
Assessing the relative importance of environmental conditions and community interactions is necessary for evaluating the sensitivity of biological communities to anthropogenic change. Phytoplankton communities have a central role in aquatic food webs and biogeochemical cycles, therefore, consequences of differing community sensitivities may have broad ecosystem effects. Using two long-term time series (28 and 20 years) from the Baltic Sea, we evaluated coastal and offshore major phytoplankton taxonomic group biovolume patterns over annual and monthly time-scales and assessed their response to environmental drivers and biotic interactions. Overall, coastal phytoplankton responded more strongly to environmental anomalies than offshore phytoplankton, although the specific environmental driver changed with time scale. A trend indicating a state shift in annual biovolume anomalies occurred at both sites and the shift's timing at the coastal site closely tracked other long-term Baltic Sea ecosystem shifts. Cyanobacteria and the autotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum were more strongly related than other groups to this trend with opposing relationships that were consistent across sites. On a monthly scale, biotic interactions within communities were rare and did not overlap between the coastal and offshore sites. Annual scales may be better able to assess general patterns across habitat types in the Baltic Sea, but monthly community dynamics may differ at relatively small spatial scales and consequently respond differently to future change.
