Mycorrhizal benefit to plants is most frequently evaluated through growth differences between mycorrhizal (M) and non‐mycorrhizal (NM) plants. These growth differences are often considered to be due to differences in belowground carbon (C) expenditure, or in cost efficiency, i.e. amount of nutrients acquired per C expended. In order to understand whether growth differences between M and NM plants are dictated by differences in C availability, we searched published reports on for relations between plant growth and belowground C allocation, C use efficiency, or nutrient uptake, in ectomycorrhizal (ECM) versus non‐mycorrhizal plants. This search was done for carrying out a meta-analysis on the published literature. The list of studies used in this meta-analysis, along with relevant information from each study, can be found in this dataset.
Half-Dose Fulvestrant plus Anastrozole as a First-Line Treatment for Hormone Receptor-Positive Metastatic Breast Cancer: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis
Abstract Objective The S0226 trial demonstrated that the combination of half-dose fulvestrant (FUL) and anastrozole (ANA) (F&A) caused a significant improvement in overall survival (OS) versus ANA monotherapy for first-line treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer (PMW-MBC[HR+]). The objective of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of F&A in the first-line treatment for PMW-MBC(HR+) in China. Design We constructed a Markov model over a life-time horizon. The clinical outcomes and utility data were obtained from published literature. Cost data were obtained from official Chinese websites. Sensitivity analyses were performed to test result uncertainty. Setting Chinese health care system perspective. Population A hypothetical cohort of adult patients presenting with PMW-MBC(HR+). Interventions F&A compared with full-dose FUL and ANA monotherapy. Main outcome measures The main outcome of this study was the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) and quality-adjusted life-years (QALY). Results ANA was estimated to have the lowest cost and minimum life years (LYs). The ICER of F&A versus ANA was $15,665.891/QALY with incremental cost and QALY of $12,401.120 and 0.792, respectively, which was less than the willingness-to-pay (WTP) of $29,383/QALY. Compared with F&A, FUL yielded a higher cost and a shorter lifetime; hence, it was identified as a dominated strategy. The univariate sensitivity analysis indicated the price of FUL was the most influential factor in our study. The probability that F&A was cost-effective at a threshold of $29,383/QALY in China was 86.5%. Conclusion F&A is a cost-effective alternative to FUL and ANA monotherapy for the first-line treatment of PMW-MBC(HR+) in China. F&A is a promising first-line treatment for PMW-MBC(HR+), and more research is needed to evaluate the economy of using F&A in other countries.
Data from: The costs and benefits of paternal care in fish: a meta-analysis
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Male-only parental care, while rare in most animals, is a widespread strategy within teleost fish. The costs and benefits to males of acting as sole carer are highly variable between fish species making it challenging to determine the selective pressures driving the evolution of male-only care to such a high prevalence. We conducted a phylogenetic meta-analysis to examine the costs and benefits of paternal care across fish species. We found no evidence that providing care negatively affects male condition. In contrast to other taxa, we also found limited evidence that male care has evolved as a strategy to improve offspring survival. Instead, we found that males already caring for a brood are preferred by females and that this preference is strongest in those species in which males work harder to care for larger broods. Thus, in fish, investment in offspring care does not constrain a male's mating success but rather augments it, suggesting that the relatively high prevalence of male-only care in fish may be in part explained by sexual selection through female preference for caring males. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
Benefit-cost analysis of adaptation objectives to coastal flooding at the global scale
<p>This dataset presents results of benefit-cost analyses of different adaptation objectives using grey infrastructure to coastal flooding at the global scale. </p> <p>The four adaptation objectives are: (1) ‘Protection constant’, which keeps protection levels in the future the same as current protection levels; (2) ‘Absolute risk constant’, which calculates future protection standards when the absolute value for expected annual damage is kept the same as current; (3) ‘Relative risk constant’, which calculates future protection standards when expected annual damage as a percentage of GDP is kept the same as current; and (4) ‘Optimize’, which calculates future protection standards by maximizing net present value.</p> <p>The results for each adaptation objective include future protection standards, change in risk relative to GDP, benefit-cost ratio and net present value for various RCP-SSP combinations for sub-national regions.</p>
Cost-effectiveness analysis of cetuximab combined with chemotherapy as a first-line treatment for RAS wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer patients based on the TAILOR trial
<p><b>Objectives</b> Cetuximab plus leucovorin, fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX-4) is superior to FOLFOX-4 alone as a first-line treatment for patients with RAS wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer (wt mCRC), with significantly improved survival benefit by TAILOR, an open-label, randomized, multicentre, phase III trial. Nevertheless, the cost-effectiveness of these two regimens remains uncertain. The following study aims to determine whether cetuximab combined with FOLFOX-4 is a cost-effective strategy for specific RAS wt mCRC patients in China.</p> <p><b>Design</b> A combined decision tree and Markov model with three health states (stable, progressive and dead) was constructed to simulate a hypothetical cohort of patients with RAS wt mCRC. The health outcomes and utility scores were derived from the TAILOR trial and previously published sources, respectively. Costs were calculated with reference to the Chinese societal perspective. A lifetime horizon was used. Univariate and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were carried out to test the robustness of the model results.</p> <p><b>Participants</b> The included patients were newly diagnosed Chinese patients with fully RAS wt mCRC. <b>Interventions</b> Either cetuximab plus FOLFOX-4 or FOLFOX-4 alone as a first-line treatment.</p> <p><b>Main outcome measures</b> The primary outcomes are costs, quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs).</p> <p><b>Results</b> Baseline analysis showed that the addition of cetuximab increased the QALYs by 0.383, while an increase of $62,947 was observed in relation to FOLFOX-4 chemotherapy. This led to an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of $164,044/QALY. Sensitivity analysis showed that across the wide variation in parameters, the ICER exceeded the willingness-to-pay threshold of $28,106/QALY, which was three times the per capita GDP in China.</p> <p><b>Conclusions</b> Despite the survival benefit, cetuximab combined with FOLFOX-4 is not a cost-effective treatment for the first line treatment of patients with RAS wt mCRC in China.</p>
Data from: A new analytical approach to landscape genetic modeling: least-cost transect analysis and linear mixed models
Landscape genetics aims to assess the effect of the landscape on intraspecific genetic structure. To quantify interdeme landscape structure, landscape genetics mostly uses landscape resistance surfaces and least-cost paths or straight-line transects. However, both approaches have drawbacks. Parameterization of resistance surfaces is a subjective process, and least-cost paths represent a single migration route. A transect-based approach might oversimplify migration patterns by assuming rectilinear migration. To overcome these limitations, we combined these two methods in a new landscape genetic approach: least-cost transect analysis (LCTA). Habitat-matrix resistance surfaces were used to create least-cost paths, which were subsequently buffered to form transects in which the abundance of several landscape elements was quantified. To maintain objectivity, this analysis was repeated so that each landscape element was in turn regarded as migration habitat. The relationship between landscape predictor variables and genetic distances was then assessed following a mixed modeling approach to account for the non-independence of values in distance matrices. Subsequently, predictor variables were selected making use of the R_β^2 statistic. We applied LCTA and the mixed model approach to an empirical genetic dataset on the endangered damselfly, Coenagrion mercuriale. We compared the results to those obtained from traditional least-cost, effective and resistance distance analysis and showed that LCTA not only outperforms existing methods in a statistical way, but also provides more information about the migration ecology of the focal species. Although we believe the statistical approach to be an improvement for the analysis of distance matrices in landscape genetics, more stringent testing is needed.
Data from: Three-month modified Rankin Scale as a determinant of five-year cumulative costs after ischemic stroke: an analysis of 11,136 patients in Korea
Objective: Stroke is a devastating and costly disease; however, there is a paucity of information on long-term costs and on how they differ according to 3-month modified Rankin scale (mRS), which is a primary outcome variable in acute stroke intervention trials. Methods: We analyzed a prospective multicenter stroke registry (Clinical Research Collaboration for Stroke in Korea) database through linkage with claims data from the National Health Insurance Service with follow up to December 2016. Healthcare expenditures were converted into daily cost individually, and annual and cumulative costs up to 5 years were estimated and compared according to the 3-month mRS. Results: Between January 2011 and November 2013, 11,136 patients were enrolled in the study. The mean age was 68 years, and 58% were men. The median follow-up period was 3.9 years (range 0–5 years). Mean cumulative cost over 5 years was $117,576 US dollar (USD); the cost in the first year after stroke was the highest ($38,152 USD), which increased markedly from the cost a year before stroke ($8,718 USD). The mean 5-year cumulative costs differed significantly according to the 3-month mRS (P<.001); the costs for a 3-month mRS score of 0 or 5 were $53,578 USD and $257,486 USD, respectively. Three-month mRS was an independent determinant of long-term costs after stroke. Conclusions: We shows that 3-month mRS plays an important role in the prediction of long-term costs after stroke. Such estimates relating to 3-month mRS categories may be valuable when undertaking health economic evaluations related to stroke care.
Cost‑effectiveness analysis of anti‑influenza drugs in adult outpatient settings in Japan
<p>The loss of productivity due to influenza virus (flu) infections (3 to 5 million cases globally), which can sometimes amount to as much as five working days, is a major socioeconomic issue. This study compares baloxavir marboxil's cost-effectiveness with that of oseltamivir for influenza treatment in adult outpatient settings in Japan from the healthcare-payer perspective. A decision tree model was constructed with probabilities from CAPSTONE 1 for low-risk patients and CAPSTONE 2 for high-risk patients. Direct costs included medical costs and drug prices. Medical costs were obtained from the Japanese Medical Fee Index (2019 version). Effectiveness outcomes (quality-adjusted life-year [QALY]) were measured using the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire for adult patients who previously experienced flu infection. The time horizon was 14 days. Deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed to examine the robustness of the results. The base case analysis revealed oseltamivir dominated baloxavir marboxil for low-risk patients. However, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for high-risk patients with body weight < 80 kg was 3,178,163 yen/QALY (US$ 30,905/QALY), which was less than the willingness to pay 5,000,000 yen/QALY (US$ 48,621/QALY). </p> <p>Moreover, the ICER for high-risk patients with influenza and body weight ≥ 80 kg was 10,709,187 yen/QALY (US$ 104,139/QALY). The study revealed baloxavir marboxil was more cost-effective than oseltamivir for high-risk patients with body weight < 80 kg. As the concept of a formulary in hospitals has gradually become popular, healthcare providers may find the insights from this study helpful in developing a novel formulary for decision-makers to consider.</p>
