Mangrove Crab Sampling Data in Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve, Haikou, Hainan Province, China

<p>This dataset contains the results of a study on mangrove crabs conducted in four seasons (Summer, SU; Autumn, AU; Winter, WI; Spring, SP) of 2020 and 2021. The samples were collected in the Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve, Haikou, Hainan Province, China, at five sites: Sanjiang (SJ), Tashi (TS), Shanweitou (SWT), Luodou (LD), and Puqian (PQ). The primary focus is on crab species belonging to the superfamilies Ocypodoidea (ghost crabs), Grapsoidea (square crabs), and Portunoidea (swimming crabs).</p> <p>Sampling was conducted using net trapping, with three replicate plots set up for each habitat type at each site. Each plot was sampled continuously for three days. Vegetation information was recorded using dominant species as representatives, and water environmental information was collected using a WTW instrument. The parameters measured include total dissolved solids (TDS) (mg/L), dissolved oxygen (DO) (mg/L), salinity (SAL) (&permil;), water temperature (T) (℃), and pH. Finally, the longitude and latitude in the WGS84 coordinate system and Cartesian coordinates for each plot were recorded.</p> <p>The dataset fields are as follows:</p> <ul> <li>date: Date of sampling</li> <li>year: Year of sampling</li> <li>month: Month of sampling</li> <li>day: Day of sampling</li> <li>site: Sampling location, including TS, SJ, SWT, LD, PQ</li> <li>habitat: Habitat type, including tidal channels, tidal flats, and several vegetation types represented by mangrove trees such as Avicennia marina, Rhizophora stylosa, Bruguiera sexangular, Sonneratia apetala, and Ceriops tagal.</li> <li>plotname: Plot name</li> <li>species: Species name, as per the World Register of Marine Species (<a href="https://www.marinespecies.org/">https://www.marinespecies.org</a>)</li> <li>superfamily: Superfamily, as per the World Register of Marine Species (<a href="https://www.marinespecies.org/">https://www.marinespecies.org</a>)</li> <li>season: Season, including Summer (SU), Autumn (AU), Winter (WI), and Spring (SP)</li> <li>cname: Plot division by season, site, and habitat</li> <li>fullname: Plot division by season, site, habitat, and plot sequence number</li> <li>pname: Plot division by site, habitat, and plot sequence number</li> <li>TDS: Water total dissolved solids (mg/L)</li> <li>pH: Water pH</li> <li>DO: Water dissolved oxygen (mg/L)</li> <li>T: Water temperature (℃)</li> <li>SAL: Water salinity (&permil;)</li> <li>longitude: Longitude in WGS84 coordinate system</li> <li>latitude: Latitude in WGS84 coordinate system</li> <li>x: Cartesian coordinate x</li> <li>y: Cartesian coordinate y</li> </ul> <p>We thank Chengpu Jiang, Liangjun Wei and other colleagues for their assistance during the field&nbsp;samplings. Thanks also for the experimental conditions and sampling support provided by Hainan Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve Authority.</p>

Fiddler crab and mollusk density in experimentally manipulated tidal creeks off the Rowley River, (Rowley and Ipswich, MA)

Climate change is predicted to shift or extend the range of warm-water species poleward. In 2014, the fiddler crab was observed for the first time at the PIE LTER site in Northeast Massachusetts, which is north of its historical range. Beginning in 2014, density estimates were collected.

Fiddler crab density in Plum Island Sound estuary, Rowley, Massachusetts

Climate change is predicted to shift or extend the range of warm-water species poleward. In 2014, the fiddler crab, Minuca (Uca) pugnax, was observed for the first time in PIE, which is north of its historical range. Beginning in 2014, density estimates were collected.

PIE LTER fish and crab trap data associated with marsh sites used in space for time sea level rise study, Rowley, MA.

This dataset consists of assessments of crab and fish abundances using traps placed in creeks adjacent to marsh community survey transects at sites around the Rowley River and the south side of Sawyer Island at the Plum Island LTER. At each site, four sets of crab and fish traps were deployed for one week. Traps were sampled daily and all individuals were identified and then returned to the creek away from the area where traps were placed. See HTL-RO-ST-MAR-Sites for site description.

Fiddler crab impacts from observational study 2020-21: Aboveground & diatom biomass, plant height, percent N, burrow & mussel density, belowground biomass, and organic matter

The fiddler crab, Minuca pugnax, expanded its range into the Gulf of Maine recently and was first observed in the Plum Island Estuary in 2014. In 2020 and 2021, we investigated the impact of this burrowing crab on benthic microalgal biomass, sediment properties and the above- and belowground biomass of the cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. To accomplish this, we conducted a control-impact study in plots with and without fiddler crabs in three marshes in the PIE-LTER: Sawyer, Clubhead, and Metcalf. In its historical range (i.e., south of Cape Cod), M. pugnax, enhances Spartina aboveground biomass. In contrast, we found that, on average, when fiddler crabs were present, aboveground biomass was 40% lower in the PIE-LTER. We also found that belowground biomass was 30% lower and benthic microalgal biomass was 45% lower when fiddler crabs were present, which is in line with our expectations. Because fiddler crabs reduced the biomass of foundational primary producers in its expanded range, our results imply that M. pugnax can influence other saltmarsh functions such as carbon storage and accretion as they expand north. More broadly, our results suggest that as species expand or shift their range with climate change, not only can they have profound impacts in their new ranges, but that those impacts can be the inverse of what is seen in their historical ranges.

Blue Crab Densities in a Landscape Context on the Virginia Coast, Summer 2019

Table 1 Crab Data : Blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) abundance was sampled at twenty-four sites in Spider Crab Bay, Cobb Bay, and South Bay (comprising two large seagrass meadows: "South Bay" for the northern portion and "Ship Shoal" for the southern portion) as part of a study to evaluate the drivers of blue crab spatial patterns across restored seagrass meadows in the coastal bays of Virginia, USA. The four meadows are representative of seagrass meadows in the region that have recovered after experiencing large declines due to wasting disease and storms (Orth et al., 2006). Each meadow contained six fixed sampling sites. Each captured crab's morphological and demographic characteristics were evaluated; as such, data are presented at the individual level. Table 2 Landscape Data: Landscape measurements were taken for twenty-four sites in Spider Crab Bay, Cobb Bay, and South Bay (comprising two large seagrass meadows: "South Bay" for the northern portion and "Ship Shoal" for the southern portion) as part of a study to evaluate the drivers of blue crab spatial patterns across restored seagrass meadows in the coastal bays of Virginia, USA. The four meadows are representative of seagrass meadows in the region that have recovered after experiencing large declines due to wasting disease and storms (Orth et al. 2006). Each meadow contained six fixed sampling sites. All landscape measurements were made using QGIS 3.14.0 (QGIS.org 2020). Seagrass landscape measurements were calculated using maps developed from aerial imagery by Orth et al. (2019). Oyster reefs polygons were mapped by Ross and Luckenbach (2009). Salt marsh polygons were mapped by Berman et al. (2011) and modified based on imagery from Planet Team (2019). Mean seagrass shoot density measurements were based on a VCR-wide 2019 sampling effort led by McGlathery (2018).
