The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) contains mean daily streamflow measurements in litersPerSecond units and were aggregated to a monthly timescale.

Data from: Co-prescription network reveals social dynamics of opioid doctor shopping

This paper examines network prominence in a co-prescription network as an indicator of opioid doctor shopping (i.e., fraudulent solicitation of opioids from multiple prescribers). Using longitudinal data from a large commercially insured population, we construct a network where a tie between patients is weighted by the number of shared opioid prescribers. Given prior research suggesting that doctor shopping may be a social process, we hypothesize that active doctor shoppers will occupy central structural positions in this network. We show that network prominence, operationalized using PageRank, is associated with more opioid prescriptions, higher predicted risk for dangerous morphine dosage, opioid overdose, and opioid use disorder, controlling for number of prescribers and other variables. Moreover, as a patient's prominence increases over time, so does their risk for these outcomes, compared to their own average level of risk. Results highlight the importance of co-prescription networks in characterizing high-risk social dynamics.

<p>Clinical case reports for the task Looking for similar patients: the AI Doctor House conquers severe COVID-19! at the event Bits x la Marat&oacute;: https://www.fib.upc.edu/en/la-marato</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>There is a pressing need by healthcare professionals to access information relevant to clinical practice in a more effective way. Over 80% of clinically relevant data is essentially unstructured, mainly images like MRI and clinical texts.</p> <p>One of the challenges faced by doctors is finding patients and clinical cases that show particular similarities to a given case (similar symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, or other characteristics) amongst the rapidly growing amount of clinical records and medical publications and the complexity of the data. Detection of similarities among patients or groups of patients is key for evidence-based clinical practice, the selection of patients for clinical trials, prioritizing patients for vaccination and for understanding the variability in clinical outcomes.</p> <p>From a COVID-19 point of view, AI tools should distinguish between patients with and with no risk of a severe outcome, so that clinicians could intervene promptly.&nbsp;<strong>Specifically, this task aims to promote the development of systems able to detect similarities among a collection of clinical case texts.</strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Technology point of view:</strong></p> <p>The objective is to be able to compute and measure similarity between patients represented by their clinical case, that is, the text describing their medical condition, previous morbidities, medical tests and treatments performed, diagnosis or outcome. This very complex scenario can in principle be approached by a diversity of methodologies ranging from text similarity techniques used to detect plagiarism, clinical concept detection, or even more advanced semantic textual similarity strategies dealing with the meaning of natural language through AI.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Healthcare point of view:</strong></p> <p>Access to medically relevant information hidden in clinical texts is one of the principal&nbsp;challenges for healthcare professionals in the AI digital age. Questions such as which&nbsp;are the symptoms of patients with a worse outcome, given similar comorbidities,&nbsp;medications or procedures are very difficult to answer without systematically&nbsp;processing clinical texts. Does the white coat influence satisfaction, trust and empathy in the doctor-patient relationship in the general and family medicine consultation? - interventional study

<p>Objectives: To understand the influence of the white coat on patient satisfaction, opinions about medical clothing, perception about confidence, empathy and medical knowledge and the satisfaction and comfort level of physicians in consultation.</p> <p>Setting: An interventional study was conducted with a representative sample of the population attending primary care in central Portugal.</p> <p>Participants: The sample was composed by 286 patients divided into two groups exposed or not to a doctor wearing a white coat. The first and last patients in consultation every day for 10 consecutive days were included.</p> <p>Interventions: Every other day the volunteer physicians consulted with or without the use of a white coat. At the end of the consultation, a questionnaire was distributed to the patient with simple questions with a Likert scale response, the Portuguese version of the "Trust in physician" scale and the JSPPPE-VP scale. A questionnaire was also distributed to the physician.</p> <p>Outcomes: Planned and measured primary outcomes were patient satisfaction, trust and perception about empathy and secondary outcomes were opinion about medical clothing, satisfaction and comfort level of physicians in consultation.</p> <p>Results: The sample was homogeneous in terms of sociodemographic variables. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of satisfaction, trust, empathy and knowledge perceived by the patients. There were differences in the opinion of the patients about the white coat, and when the physician was wearing the white coat this group of patients tended to think that this was the only acceptable attire for the physician (p&lt;0.001). But, when the family physician was in consultation without the white coat, this group of patients tended to agree that communication was easier (p=0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions: There was no significant impact of the white coat in patient satisfaction, empathy, and confidence in the family physician.</p> <p>Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov</p> <p>ID Number: NCT03965416</p>
