Environmental correlates of reptile variation on the Houtman Abrolhos archipelago, eastern Indian Ocean

Aim: To examine the relationships between island environmental attributes, both biotic and abiotic, and three measures of reptilian variation – species assemblage, species richness, and body size distributions. Location: Houtman Abrolhos archipelago, Western Australia. Taxon: Reptiles. Methods: Nineteen islands were sampled from 2002 - 2012 using foraging and trapping. Body size (snout-vent length) was measured on first capture. Island size varied from 0.3 - 587 ha, encompassing the three geomorphic island types, the three bathymetric groups, and a range of other environmental attributes. Results: From about 1500 captures, 24 reptile species were recorded, including three previously undocumented on the archipelago, and 55 records of species not previously recorded on specific islands. Four significantly different reptile assemblage groups were identified. These were highly correlated with geomorphological composition - two groups encompassing the three large aeolianite islands; another the high rock islands and the largest composite island; and a fourth consisting of the remaining composite islands with one very small high rock island. Both assemblage and richness on islands were significantly correlated with island area, geomorphology and native plant species richness. Of the 13 species captured frequently, eleven showed statistically significant inter-island variation in body size, and two exhibited sexual dimorphism. In three species, size was also correlated with environmental attributes, including reptile species richness, native plant richness, geomorphology and island area. Six of the eleven species captured on the two largest islands (both aeolianite) differed in size on these adjacent islands. Main Conclusions: High inter-island variation in body size and assemblage composition suggest strong differential selection since the most recent isolation event at 6,500 bp. Anthropogenic disturbances over the last 150 years have resulted in several island extinctions. Species assemblage and richness are strongly associated with environmental attributes. Inter-island body size variation in three species revealed idiosyncratic responses to environmental pressures. Results provide guidance for effective conservation and management strategies, and evidence for the extinction debts inherent in more recently fragmented mainland habitats.

Pearson correlation tests for environmental variables, Student t-test for range shift and comparisons for habitat loss in 2070

<p><span>Habitat loss and shifts associated with climate change threaten global biodiversity, with impacts likely to be most pronounced at high latitudes. With the disappearance of the tundra breeding habitats, migratory shorebirds that breed at these high latitudes are likely to be even more vulnerable to climate change than those in temperate regions. We examined this idea using new distributional information on two subspecies of Black-tailed Godwits <em>Limosa limosa</em> in Asia: the northerly, bog-breeding <em>L. l. bohaii</em> and the more southerly, steppe-breeding <em>L. l. melanuroides</em>. Based on breeding locations of tagged and molecularly assayed birds, we modelled the current breeding distributions of the two subspecies with species distribution models, tested those models for robustness, and then used them to predict climatically suitable breeding ranges in 2070 according to bioclimatic variables and different climate change scenarios. Our models were robust and showed that climate change is expected to push bohaii into the northern rim of the Eurasian continent. <em>Melanuroides</em> is also expected to shift northward, stopping in the Yablonovyy and </span><span>Stanovoy Ranges</span><span>, and breeding elevation is expected to increase.</span> <span>Climatically suitable breeding habitat ranges would shrink to 16% and 11% of the currently estimated ranges of <em>bohaii</em> and <em>melanuroides</em>, respectively. Overall, this study provides the first predictions for the future distributions of two little-known Black-tailed Godwit subspecies and highlights the importance of factoring in shifts in bird distribution when designing climate-proof conservation strategies.</span></p>

Data from: Environmental correlates of molluscan predator-prey body size in the northern Gulf of Mexico

<p>The Mississippi River watershed drains 40% of the continental United States, and the tremendous primary productivity in the adjacent north-central Gulf of Mexico has created one of the most extensive dead zones on Earth. In contrast, smaller watersheds deliver less nutrients to the northeastern Gulf, and consequently productivity is limited and hypoxia is uncommon. How has variation in primary productivity, oxygen availability, and sea surface temperature, affected coastal food webs? Here, we investigate environmental controls on the size of molluscan predators and prey in the northern Gulf of Mexico using Holocene death assemblages. Linear mixed models indicate that bivalve size and the frequency of drilling predation are affected by dissolved oxygen concentrations; drilling frequency declines with declining oxygen, whereas bivalve size increases. In contrast, sea surface temperature is positively associated with the size of molluscan predators and prey. Net primary productivity contributes relatively little to predator or prey size, and predator-to-prey size ratios do not vary consistently with environmental conditions across the northern Gulf. Larger bivalves in areas of oxygen limitation may be due to decreased predation pressure and consequently greater prey longevity. The larger size of bivalves and predatory gastropods in warmer waters may reflect enhanced growth under these conditions, provided dissolved oxygen concentrations exceed a minimum threshold. Holocene death assemblages can be used to test long-standing hypotheses regarding environmental controls on predator-prey body size distributions through geologic time and provide baselines for assessing the ongoing effects of anthropogenic eutrophication and warming on coastal food webs.</p>
