Data from: Environmental modification via a quorum sensing molecule influences the social landscape of siderophore production

Bacteria produce a wide variety of exoproducts that favourably modify their environment and increase their fitness. These are often termed 'public goods' because they are costly for individuals to produce and can be exploited by non-producers (cheats). The outcome of conflict over public goods is dependent upon the prevailing environment and the phenotype of the individuals in competition. Many bacterial species use quorum sensing (QS) signalling molecules to regulate the production of public goods. QS, therefore, determines the cooperative phenotype of individuals, and influences conflict over public goods. In addition to their regulatory functions, many QS molecules have additional properties that directly modify the prevailing environment. This leads to the possibility that QS molecules could influence conflict over public goods indirectly through non-signalling effects, and the impact of this on social competition has not previously been explored. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa QS signal molecule PQS is a powerful chelator of iron which can cause an iron starvation response. Here, we show that PQS stimulates a concentration-dependent increase in the cooperative production of iron scavenging siderophores, resulting in an increase in the relative fitness of non-producing siderophore cheats. This is likely due to an increased cost of siderophore output by producing cells and a concurrent increase in the shared benefits, which accrue to both producers and cheats. Although PQS can be a beneficial signalling molecule for P. aeruginosa, our data suggest that it can also render a siderophore-producing population vulnerable to competition from cheating strains. More generally, our results indicate that the production of one social trait can indirectly affect the costs and benefits of another social trait.

Productivity of riparian Populus forests: satellite assessment along a prairie river with an environmental flow regime

<p>In semi-arid regions, the growth and survival of cottonwoods (riparian Populus species) depend on river water supplementing the limited precipitation. Indicators of growth and productivity are needed to assess how altered streamflow regimes on regulated rivers impact cottonwood trees and the riparian forest ecosystems they support. Satellite imagery from the Landsat program was used to make historical assessments of ecosystem productivity in a riparian cottonwood forest along a regulated prairie river in southern Alberta, Canada from 1984 to 2020, with an environmental flow regime that increased the minimum flows implemented in 1993. A version of the near-infrared reflectance of vegetation scaled with incoming sunlight (NIRvP) was calculated from Landsat images to  provide a proxy for primary production. NIRvP was validated against gross primary production measurements from eddy covariance and cottonwood basal area increment measurements from tree ring analyses. Streamflow and weather data were used to assess what  environmental conditions drive year-to-year variations in NIRvP.</p>

Data_Effects of Environmental Financial Support Instruments on Firm Productivity

<p>Recent research provides inconsistent evidence of the effectiveness of European Union (EU) renewable energy policies. Therefore, this paper aims at empirically verifying the effectiveness of three major EU renewable energy policies at the micro level. Using pooled OLS, fixed effects, random effects, and system generalized method-of-movements, it analyzes panel data for EU countries over a twenty-year period. The paper first examines in what extent the Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) in combination with other renewable support instruments, such as Feed-in Tariff (FIT) and Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), contribute to the reduction of emissions by regulated firms. Second, as regulated firms switch to new and more energy-efficient technologies in order to meet the regulation, this paper estimates the impact of the EU ETS, together with the FIT and RPS instruments, on firms&rsquo; productivity premia and productivity growth. The main results show that the EU ETS does not have a significant impact on firms&rsquo; productivity (except in periods around the implementation phase, i.e. in years <em>t0</em> and <em>t1</em>). Firms that are using the FIT support already had higher relative productivity before the EU ETS implementation and continue to maintain the productivity premia over non-EU ETS firms after the ETS implementation, while RPS is shown to boost firms&rsquo; productivity after implementation of the EU ETS. The interactions between EU ETS and FIT-RPS measures do not seem to have an additional systematic impact on the productivity of firms affected.</p> <p><strong>Keywords: </strong>renewable energy, FIT, RPS, EU ETS, technology diffusion, firm productivity</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
