Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MIDEQ), MI: Water Color Study, 2006
The MI-DEQ initiated this study to test the nutrient criteria model developed in the state in which water color was one of the predictor variables of lake phosphorus. Great Lakes Environmental Center (GLEC) collected samples from 24 lakes/reservoirs; MDEQ collected samples on 39 lakes; and GLEC analyzed all data in their lab.

Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MI): water quality sampling program, 1967-1997
This program is the water quality sampling program for the state of Michigan (formerly the Department of Natural Resources, then the Department of Environmental Quality). Most, if not all lakes are public and > 25 acres. The goal of the program is to determine inland lake trophic status. Spring samples are taken to determine total phosphorus and other parameter levels of the lake while it is well mixed. Summer samples were also performed for other parameters.
Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan's Lake Water Quality Assessment Program (MI-LWQA), 2001-2010
The sampling methodology and program was designed to replicate the methods used historically by MI-DEQ to sample inland lakes in the 1970-1980’s. Each year, lakes were selected randomly from 7-10 major watersheds in MI. Watersheds were monitored in a 5-yr cycle in conjunctions with current MI-DEQ water quality activities. Lakes > 25 acres were chosen that had public boat access.

The ribosomal DNA comprised of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 regions is widely used as a fungal marker in molecular ecology and systematics but cannot be aligned with confidence across genetically distant taxa. In order to study the diversity of Agaricomycotina in forest soils, we designed primers targeting the more alignable 28S (LSU) gene, which should be more useful for phylogenetic analyses of the detected taxa. This paper compares the performance of the established ITS1F/4B primer pair, which targets basidiomycetes, to that of two new pairs. Key factors in the comparison were the diversity covered, off-target amplification, rarefaction at different Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTU) cutoff levels, sensitivity of the method used to process the alignment to missing data and insecure positional homology, and the congruence of monophyletic clades with OTU assignments and BLAST-derived OTU names. The ITS primer pair yielded no off-target amplification but also exhibited the least fidelity to the expected phylogenetic groups. The LSU primers give complementary pictures of diversity, but were more sensitive to modifications of the alignment such as the removal of difficult-to align stretches. The LSU primers also yielded greater numbers of singletons but also had a greater tendency to produce OTUs containing sequences from a wider variety of species as judged by BLAST similarity. We introduced some new parameters to describe alignment heterogeneity based on Shannon entropy and the extent and contents of the OTUs in a phylogenetic tree space. Our results suggest that ITS should not be used when calculating phylogenetic trees from genetically distant sequences obtained from environmental DNA extractions and that it is inadvisable to define OTUs on the basis of very heterogeneous alignments.
Data from: The effects of male harm vary with female quality and environmental complexity in Drosophila melanogaster
Mate competition provides the opportunity for sexual selection which often acts strongly on males, but also the opportunity for sexual conflict that can alter natural selection on females. Recent attention has focused on the potential of sexual conflict to weaken selection on females if male sexual attention, and hence harm, is disproportionately directed toward high over low quality females, thereby reducing the fitness difference between these females. However, sexual conflict could instead strengthen selection on females if low quality females are more sensitive to male harm than high quality females, thereby magnifying fitness differences between them. We quantify the effects of male exposure on low vs. high quality females in Drosophila melanogaster in each of two environments ("simple" and "complex") that are known to alter behavioural interactions. We show that the effects of male harm are greater for low compared to high quality females in the complex but not the simple environment, consistent with mate competition strengthening selection on females in the former but not in the latter environment.

Sexual cues, including extended phenotypes, are expected to be reliable indicators of male genetic quality and/or provide information on parental quality. However, the reliability of these cues may be dependent on stability of the environment, with heterogeneity affecting how selection acts on such traits. Here we test how environmental change mediates mate choice for multiple sexual traits, including an extended phenotype – the structure of male-built nests – in stickleback fish. First, we manipulated the dissolved oxygen (DO) content of water to create high or low DO environments in which male fish built nests. Then we recorded the mate choice of females encountering these males (and their nests), under either the same or reversed DO conditions. Males in high DO environments built more compact nests than those in low DO conditions and males adjusted their nest structure in response to changing conditions. Female mate choice for extended phenotype (male nests) was environmentally-dependent (females chose more compact nests in high DO conditions), while female choice for male phenotype was not (females chose large, vigorous males regardless of DO level). Examining mate choice in this dynamic context suggests that females evaluate the reliability of multiple sexual cues, taking into account environmental heterogeneity.
