Effect of space diffuser on flow characteristics of a centrifugal pump by computational fluid dynamic analysis

<p><span>Achieving an optimal configuration of the diffuser is indispensable for high pump performances. In this work, a numerical study on diffuser configuration is conducted for a high pump performance using a computational fluid dynamics code, and the effects of the wrap angle and the relative position of the diffuser vane to the impeller on pump performances are included. The results indicate that the modified diffuser with a suitable wrap angle may improve the pump hydraulic efficiency and the head by approximately 4% and 8%, respectively, while a suitable position of the diffuser vane can enhance the pump head by more than 4%. Meanwhile, the pressure recovery coefficient and the local Euler head of the diffuser are adopted to evaluate the diffuser performance. For a high pump performance, the local Euler head of the diffuser has a peak value at the leading edge with the change rate of zero along the meridian streamline, meaning that no blade loading at the leading edge of the diffuser guarantees a better match between the impeller and the diffuser.</span></p>

Data from: The relevance of gene flow in metapopulation dynamics of an oceanic island endemic, Olea europaea subsp guanchica

Theoretical and empirical studies suggest that geographical isolation and extinction-recolonization dynamics are two factors causing strong genetic structure in metapopulations. Here, we investigated the effect of population age structure and isolation by distance in the patterns of genetic diversity in a tree species (Olea europaea subsp. guanchica) sporadically affected by volcanic events across the Canarian archipelago. Genetic variation was assessed at six nuclear microsatellites (nDNA) and six chloroplast fragments (cpDNA) in nine subpopulations sampled on four oceanic islands. Subpopulations occurring on more recent substrates were more differentiated than those on older substrates, but within-subpopulation genetic diversity was not significantly different between age groups for any type of marker. Contrary to the general trend for island systems, between-island differentiation was extremely low, and lower than differentiation between subpopulations on the same island. The pollen-to-seed ratio was close to one, two orders of magnitude lower than the average estimated for other wind-pollinated, animal-dispersed plants. Our results showed that population turnover and geographical isolation increased genetic differentiation relative to an island model at equilibrium, but overall genetic structure was unexpectedly weak for a species distributed among islands. This empirical study shows that extensive gene flow, particularly mediated by seeds, can ameliorate population subdivision resulting from extinction-recolonization dynamics and isolation by distance

Data from: Current geography masks dynamic history of gene flow during speciation in northern Australian birds

Genome divergence is greatly influenced by gene flow during early stages of speciation. As populations differentiate, geographical barriers can constrain gene flow and so affect the dynamics of divergence and speciation. Current geography, specifically disjunction and continuity of ranges, is often used to predict the historical gene flow during the divergence process. We test this prediction in eight meliphagoid bird species complexes codistributed in four regions. These regions are separated by known biogeographic barriers across northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. We find that bird populations currently separated by terrestrial habitat barriers within Australia and marine barriers between Australia and Papua New Guinea have a range of divergence levels and probability of gene flow not associated with current range connectivity. Instead, geographic distance and historical range connectivity better predict divergence and probability of gene flow. In this dynamic environmental context, we also find support for a nonlinear decrease of the probability of gene flow during the divergence process. The probability of gene flow initially decreases gradually after a certain level of divergence is reached. Its decrease then accelerates until the probability is close to zero. This implies that although geographic connectivity may have more of an effect early in speciation, other factors associated with higher divergence may play a more important role in influencing gene flow midway through and later in speciation. Current geographic connectivity may then mislead inferences regarding potential for gene flow during speciation under a complex and dynamic history of geographic and reproductive isolation.

Data From: Active sinking particles: Flow and transport dynamics due to sessile suspension feeders on sinking aggregates

<p>Sinking or sedimentation of biological aggregates plays a critical role in carbon sequestration in the ocean and in vertical material fluxes in waste-water treatment plants. In both these contexts, the sinking aggregates are "active," since they are biological hot-spots and are densely colonized by microorganisms including bacteria and sessile protists, some of which generate feeding currents. However, the effect of these feeding currents on the sinking rates, trajectories, and mass transfer to these "active sinking particles," has not previously been studied. Here we use a novel scale-free vertical-tracking microscope (a.k.a. Gravity Machine, Krishnamurthy et al. "Scale-free vertical tracking microscopy." Nature Methods (2020)) to follow model sinking aggregates (agar spheres) with attached protists (<em>Vorticella convallaria</em>), sinking over long distances while simultaneously measuring local flows. We find that activity due to attached \vortc causes significant changes to the flow around aggregates in a dynamic manner and reshapes mass transport boundary layers. Furthermore, we find that activity-mediated local flows along with sinking modify the encounter and plume cross-sections of the aggregate and induce sustained aggregate rotations. Overall our work shows the important role of biological activity in shaping the near-field flows around aggregates with potentially important effects on aggregate fate and material fluxes.</p>

Respiration and CO2 evasion dynamics in moving streambeds as a response to flow regimes

<p>This dataset contains both raw and processed data utilized in generating the findings outlined in our research paper titled &quot;Respiration and CO2 Evasion Dynamics in Mobile Streambeds in Response to Different Flow Regimes,&quot; which has been submitted to the Journal of Hydrology. Additionally, within this dataset, you will find a collection of movies that are part of our Supporting Information.</p> <p>Within this dataset, you will find a sub-dataset for all nine experimental runs. These experimental runs encompass three distinct flow regimes: a constant flow regime (C), a sinusoidal flow regime (S), and a single peak flow event (F).
