Vegetation surveys at CAP LTER ripirain-area bird-monitoring locations in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (2013)
Over the past half-century, the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA) has been one of the fastest growing regions in the US, experiencing rapid urban expansion in addition to urban intensification. This backdrop provides an ideal setting to monitor biodiversity changes in response to urbanization, and the CAP LTER has been using a standardized point-count protocol to monitor the bird population throughout the GPMA and surrounding Sonoran desert region since 2000. A subset of these bird-monitoring sites are located in riparian areas, and additional riparian-area monitoring locations centered on the Salt River as it runs through the GPMA were added in 2013 and 2014. In May and June of 2013, the CAP LTER surveyed the vegetation in 6,400 square meter plots around all of these riparian-area sites as part of an analysis of change in bird abundance and community composition. This dataset catalogs the results of vegetation surveys at nineteen bird-monitoring sites in riparian areas of the GPMA.

MODIS/ASTER (MASTER) imagery and derived data in select neighborhoods of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area
A data collection campaign using the MODIS/ASTER airborne simulator (MASTER) was conducted in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area in July 2011 to collect visible through mid-infrared multispectral imagery. High resolution (7 m/pixel) land surface temperature products for day and night periods were calculated using the mid-infrared bands of data; surface reflectance, albedo, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) products were calculated using the visible through shortwave infrared band data for 41 select neighborhoods. While the full MASTER dataset has been processed to at-sensor radiance, it did not include native geolocation data. As georeferencing the entire dataset was not possible with funds available, the processed data described above were extracted for the 41 spatially discrete Phoenix Area Social Survey neighborhoods within the MASTER flight boundary.
North Desert Village Experiment - a landscaping experiment in neighborhoods of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area: 2003-2014
The North Desert Village (NDV) landscape experiment at the Arizona State University Polytechnic campus was designed to give a platform for CAP LTER researchers to study human–landscape interactions. Four residential landscape design and water-delivery types established in blocks of six households each (mini-neighborhoods) mirrored the four prevailing residential yardscape types found across the greater Phoenix metropolitan area: (1) Mesic: a mixture of exotic high water-use vegetation and shade trees with turf grass, (2) Oasis: a mixture of drip-watered, high and low water-use plants on granite substrate, and sprinkler-irrigated turf grass, (3) Xeric: individually watered, low water-use exotic and native plants on granite substrate, and (4) Native: native Sonoran desert plants on granite substrate without supplemental water. Six additional households are monitored in a control treatment area that did not receive landscaping treatment or supplemental water. Major research questions include: How do landscape design and irrigation methods affect net primary productivity and under-canopy microclimate, and soil nutrient pools and fluxes. In addition, the mini-neighborhoods at NDV were incorporated into CAP LTER biodiversity monitoring programs, facilitating insights into insect abundance and diversity, and bird activity in these experimental treatment areas. During summer 2005, the landscape and irrigation systems for each of the treatment areas were completed. During spring 2006, micrometeorological (micromet) stations were installed in the central common area of each treatment area. Data continually monitored included soil temperature, soil heat flux, and volumetric water content of soil at 30-cm depth. Air temperature at 2-m height and soil-surface temperature (recorded by an infrared thermometer at 2-m height) were also monitored regularly. Launched in 2006 with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and leveraged by the CAP LTER, the Carbon and Nitrogen deposition (CNdep) project sought to answer the fundamental question of whether elemental cycles in urban ecosystems are qualitatively different from those in non-urban ecosystems. Ecosystem scientists, atmospheric chemists, and biogeochemists tested the hypothesis that distinct biogeochemical pathways result from elevated inorganic nitrogen and organic carbon deposition from the atmosphere to the land. To test the hypothesis, scientists examined the responsiveness of Sonoran desert ecosystems to nutrient enrichment by capitalizing on a gradient of atmospheric deposition in and around the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. Fifteen desert study sites were established, with five locations each west and east of the urban core, and in the urban core in desert preserves. In addition to the gradient of atmospheric deposition in and around the urban core, select study plots at each of the fifteen desert locations receive amendments of nitrogen, phosphorus, or nitrogen + phosphorus fertilizer. Measured variables include soil properties, perennial and annual plant growth, and atmospheric deposition of nitrogen. At the close of the initial grant period, the CAP LTER assumed responsibility for the project, renamed the Desert Fertilization Experiment, which provides a remarkable platform to study the long-term effects of nutrient enrichment on ecosystem properties. This data set features the composition of annual plants in subplots at project study sites assessed in spring 2008. These data are published independently of surveys of annual plants in subsequent years owing to slightly differnet methods employed in 2008 relative to other years. Bird surveys along the Salt River in and near the greater Phoenix metropolitan area: 2012-2013
Waterways are often the focus of restoration efforts in urban areas. In arid regions, passive discharge of urban water sources may stimulate the recovery or growth of wetland and riparian features in dewatered or ephemeral aquatic systems. In the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA), sections of the Salt and Gila Rivers have been the targets of active restoration through seeding, planting, and irrigation. At the same time, revegetation has occurred in some sections of the rivers in response to runoff from urban water sources (e.g., storm drains). This dataset catalogs the results of bird surveys conducted at several locations along the Salt River in and around the GPMA from March 2012 through October 2013. Survey locations include riparian areas in urban and non-urban locations that have been (actively) restored or have revegetated in response to urban runoff, and that feature ephemeral or perennial sources of water.
