Data from: Local human pressures influence gene flow in a hybridizing Daphnia species complex

Anthropogenic environmental changes are considered critical drivers of the genetic structure of populations and communities through, for example, the facilitation of introgressive hybridization between syntopic species. However, the mechanisms by which environmental perturbations trigger changes in the genetic structure of populations and communities, such as the processes that determine the directionality of hybridization and patterns of mitochondrial introgression over many generations, remain largely unexplored. In this study, the changes in genetic structure of hybridizing members of the Daphnia longispina species complex were reconstructed over the last 100 years for three large temperate lakes under strong anthropogenic pressures via paleogenetic analyses of resting egg banks. Drastic changes in the genetic structure of the Daphnia community, associated with hybridization events between D. longispina and D. galeata and subsequent introgression, were detected in Lakes Geneva and Bourget. In Lake Bourget, these changes were induced by the successful establishment of D. galeata with rising phosphorus levels and reinforced by the sensitivity of D. longispina to fish predation pressure. In Lake Geneva, the pattern of hybridization during eutrophication is more likely a function of the original taxonomic composition of the species complex in this lake. Lakes seem to require at least a meso-oligotrophic status to allow D. galeata populations to establish and accordingly no D. galeata genotypes were found in the egg bank of oligotrophic Lake Annecy. In contrast to the generally assumed pattern of unidirectional hybridization in this species complex, bidirectional hybridization was recorded in Lakes Geneva and Bourget. Our results also demonstrate complex genetic trajectories within this species complex and highlight the irreversibility of changes in the genotypic architecture of populations driven by local human pressures. Finally, we show that extensive hybridization and introgression do not necessarily result in a large and homogenous hybrid swarm.

Data from: Exploring possible human influences on the evolution of Darwin's finches

Humans are an increasingly common influence on the evolution of natural populations. Potential arenas of influence include altered evolutionary trajectories within populations and modifications of the process of divergence among populations. We consider this second arena in the medium ground finch (Geospiza fortis) on Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos, Ecuador. Our study compared the G. fortis population at a relatively undisturbed site, El Garrapatero, to the population at a severely disturbed site, Academy Bay, which is immediately adjacent to the town of Puerto Ayora. The El Garrapatero population currently shows beak size bimodality that is tied to assortative mating and disruptive selection, whereas the Academy Bay population was historically bimodal but has lost this property in conjunction with a dramatic increase in local human population density. We here evaluate potential ecological-adaptive drivers of the differences in modality by quantifying relationships between morphology (beak and head dimensions), functional performance (bite force), and environmental characteristics (diet). Our main finding is that associations among these variables are generally weaker at Academy Bay than at El Garrapatero, possibly because novel foods are used at the former site irrespective of individual morphology and performance. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the rugged adaptive landscapes promoting and maintaining diversification in nature can be smoothed by human activities, thus hindering ongoing adaptive radiation.

Influence of Green Human Resource Practices on Environment Sustainability of Cement Industry in Pakistan

<p>Global warming aligns firms green human resource management (HRM) practices, categories with environmental sustainability. Researchers believes that environment friendly practices, employees&rsquo; empowerment, awareness towards green environment promotes firms&rsquo; businesses. Aim of the current study is analysis of the GHRM practices on environment sustainability of cement industry in Pakistan. The first hypothesis was Green recruitment and selection practice have significant influence on environmental sustainability of cement industry in Pakistan. The second hypothesis was green performance management practice have significant influence on environmental sustainability of cement industry in Pakistan. There were two independent variables (green recruitment and selection and green performance management and appraisal) one dependent variable environment sustainability were tested. SPSS and2nd generation statistical software Smart PLS 3.2.9 were used for the measurement model and structural model. Both hypotheses &nbsp;show significance level i.e., green recruitment and selection &nbsp;GRaS&gt;ES (&beta; = .235, t = 2.385, p &lt; .003) with f2 of .035 and green performance appraisal GPA&gt;ES (&beta; = .258, t = 3.345, p &lt; .002) with f2 of .025 were significant. The current study suggests that employees&rsquo; recruitments and appraisals in private sector should be performed on the GHRM practices to achieve the environment sustainable goals.</p>

Data from: Pyrenean ptarmigan decline under climatic and human influences through the Holocene

In Europe, the Quaternary is characterized by climatic fluctuations known to have led to many cycles of contraction and expansion of species geographical ranges. In addition, during the Holocene, historical changes in human occupation such as colonization or abandonment of traditional land uses can also affect habitats. These climatically or anthropically induced geographic range changes are expected to produce considerable effective populations size change, measurable in terms of genetic diversity and organization. The rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) is a small-bodied grouse occurring throughout Northern hemispheric arctic and alpine tundra. This species is not considered threatened at a continental scale, but the populations in the Pyrenees are because of their small population size, geographical isolation, and low genetic diversity. Here, we used eleven microsatellites to investigate genetic variations and differentiations and infer the overall demographic history of Pyrenean rock ptarmigan populations. The low genetic variability found in these populations has been previously thought to be the result of a bottleneck that occurred following the last glacial maximum (i.e., 10,000 years ago) or more recently (i.e., during the last 200 years). Our results clearly indicate a major bottleneck affecting the populations in the last tenth of the Holocene. We discuss how this decline can be explained by a combination of unfavorable and successive events which all increased the degree of habitat fragmentation.
