Data From: B1 Field inhomogeneity correction for qDESS T2 mapping: application to rapid bilateral knee imaging

<p><strong>Purpose</strong>: T2&nbsp;mapping is a powerful tool for studying osteoarthritis (OA) changes and bilateral imaging may be useful in investigating the role of between-knee asymmetry in OA onset and progression. The quantitative double-echo in steady-state (qDESS) can provide fast simultaneous bilateral knee T2&nbsp;and high-resolution morphometry for cartilage and meniscus.<br> The qDESS uses an analytical signal model to compute T2&nbsp;relaxometry maps, which require knowledge of the flip angle (FA).&nbsp;<br> In the presence of B1&nbsp;inhomogeneities, inconsistencies between the nominal and actual FA can affect the accuracy of T2&nbsp;measurements.<br> We propose a pixel-wise B1&nbsp;correction method for qDESS T2&nbsp;mapping exploiting an auxiliary B1&nbsp;map to compute the actual FA used in the model.<br> &nbsp;<br> <strong>Methods</strong>:&nbsp;The technique was validated in a phantom and in vivo with simultaneous bilateral knee imaging.&nbsp;<br> T2&nbsp;measurements of femoral cartilage (FC) of both knees of six healthy participants were repeated longitudinally to investigate the association between T2&nbsp;variation and B1.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>:&nbsp;The results showed that applying the B1&nbsp;correction mitigated T2&nbsp;variations that were driven by B1&nbsp;inhomogeneities.&nbsp;<br> Specifically, T2&nbsp;left-right symmetry increased following the B1&nbsp;correction (rc&nbsp;= 0.74 &gt;&nbsp;rc&nbsp;= 0.69). Without the B1&nbsp;correction, T2&nbsp;values showed a linear dependence with B1. The linear coefficient decreased using the B1&nbsp;correction (from 24.3 <span class="math-tex">\(\pm\)</span>&nbsp;1.6 ms to 4.1 <span class="math-tex">\(\pm\)</span>&nbsp;1.8) and the correlation was not statistically significant after the application of the Bonferroni correction (p-value &gt;&nbsp;0.01).<br> &nbsp;<br> <strong>Conclusion</strong>:&nbsp;the study showed that B1 correction could mitigate variations driven by the sensitivity of the qDESS T2&nbsp;mapping method to B1, therefore increasing the sensitivity to detect real biological changes. The proposed method may improve the robustness of bilateral qDESS T2&nbsp;mapping, allowing for an accurate and more efficient evaluation of OA pathways and pathophysiology through longitudinal and cross-sectional studies.</p> <p><strong>This repository contains the raw data for reproducing the&nbsp;results reported in the paper. The data are provided in NIFTI format. The repository also contains the MALTAB&nbsp;scripts used to compute B1 maps from the NIFTI data.</strong></p>

Data from: Early treatment response in non-small cell lung cancer patients using diffusion-weighted imaging and functional diffusion maps - a feasibility study

Objective: The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the feasibility of monitoring treatment response to chemotherapy in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma using functional diffusion maps (fDMs). Materials and Methods: This study was approved by the Cantonal Research Ethics Committee and informed written consent was obtained from all patients. Nine patients (mean age = 66 years; range = 53–76 years, 5 females, 4 males) with overall 13 lesions were included. Imaging was performed within two weeks before initiation of chemotherapy and at one, two, and six weeks after initiation of chemotherapy. Imaging included a respiratory-triggered diffusion-weighted sequence including three b-factors (100, 600, and 800 s/mm2). Treatment response was defined by change in tumor diameter on computed tomography (CT) after two cycles of chemotherapy. Changes in the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) on a per-lesion basis and the percentages of voxel with significantly increased or decreased ADCs on fDMs were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Changes in tumor size were used as covariate to examine the ability of ADCs and fDM parameters to predict treatment response. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA revealed that the percentage of voxels with increased ADCs on fDMs (p = 0.002) as well as the mean ADC increase (p = 0.011) were significantly higher in good responders with a large reduction in tumor size on CT. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the percentage of voxels with significantly increased ADCs on fDMs seems to be a promising biomarker for early prediction of treatment response in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma. Contrary to averaged values, this approach allows the spatial heterogeneity of treatment response to be resolved.

Mapping Areas Invaded by Pinus sp. from Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) Applied on RPAS (Drone) Color Images

<p><strong>Abstract: </strong>Invasive alien species reduce biodiversity. In southern Brazil, the genus <em>Pinus</em> is considered invasive, and its dispersal by humans has resulted in this species reaching ecosystems that are more sensitive and less suitable for cultivation, as it was the case for the restingas on the island of Santa Catarina. Invasion control requires persistent efforts to identify and treat each new invasion case as a priority. In this study, areas invaded by <em>Pinus</em> sp. in restingas were mapped using images taken by a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS, or drone) to identify the invasion areas in great detail, enabling management to be planned for the most recently invaded areas, where management is simpler, more effective, and less costly. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) was&nbsp;applied on images taken from a conventional RGB camera embedded in a RPAS, which resulted in a global accuracy of 89.56%, a mean kappa index of 0.86, and an F-score of 0.90 for the <em>Pinus</em> sp. Processing was conducted with open source software to reduce operational costs.</p>

Magnetic susceptibility-weighted imaging mapped the migratory route of a paragonimus in brain

<p>A 53-year-old man with a recent history of left temporal lobe hemorrhage presented with weakness of left upper limb for 4 days. Paragonimus eggs were detected in patient's sputum. Work up revealed paragonimiasis, a lung fluke worm infection endemic to East Africa, West Africa and South America which rarely involves in brain. Characteristic tunnel sign was visualized on brain MRI. Notably, susceptibility-weighted imaging revealed a migratory pattern of the parasite from the left temporal lobe to the right parietal lobe and resultant patchy hemorrhage. Treatment with praziquantel resulted in favorable outcome without residual deficits.</p>
