Effects of fallen Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) on understory plant, invertebrate, and fungi communities

For nearly two years, natural deposition of Spanish moss was excluded from 2m x 2m plots positioned in the understory of a single live oak at each of two field sites. After 29 months, we measured the effects of fallen Spanish moss, relative to unmanipulated control plots that intercepted natural levels of fallen Spanish moss, on understory grass, invertebrate, and fungi communities as well as on litter layer depth, and litter decomposition rates using litter bags. This research was conducted in two fields on Sapelo Island, GA: Long Tabby (LT) and King's Field (KF). Experimental exclusions were maintained by manually removing Spanish moss from experimental plots monthly over the duration of the experiment.

Effects of ribbed mussel aggregation size on marsh invertebrate community structure and multiple eocsystem functions

Ribbed mussels (Geukensia demissa) were added in aggregations containing 0, 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 40 or 80 mussels (N=3 replicates per aggregation size) in Spring of 2012 in a high marsh platform at the Airport Marsh on Sapelo Island, GA. In summer of 2013, we measured the response of invertebrate communities and six ecosystem functions. Specifically, we counted the number of Littoraria irrorata, Sesarma reticulatum burrows, Uca pugnax burrows (those > and <5mm in diameter were counted separately), and mud crab (Eurythium limosum and Panopeus herbstii) in 50cm x 50cm sampling frames. And, we measured aboveground cordgrass biomass, benthic algae biomass, invertebrate biomass, decomposition rate, infiltration rate, and soil accretion in the same size sampling frames in August of 2013.

Experimental manipulation of predatory crab species identity (Panopeus obesus vs. Eurytium limosum) and size-structure and assessment of effects on invertebrate densities, sediment properties and plant biomass.

Predatory mud crabs (Panopeus obesus and Eurytium limosum) are two of the main resident infaunal predators in southeastern US salt marshes. Little is known, however, about their effects on important prey species, or their influences on sediment or plant properties. These influences are likely to be dependent on the identity of species and the size-stucture of the population. We therefore manipulated the species identity (Panopeus or Eurtium) and size-structure. The size-structure treatrment had four levels: small [9 individuals, each 18-22mm carapace diameter], medium [6 ind. 24 -28mm], large [3 ind. 32-36mm], mixed (3 small, 2 medium, 1 large, all within same cage). The numbers of crabs in each size-structure treatment were chosen to capture natural size-abundance relationships. The treatments were maintained in experimental cages (70 x 70 x 100 cm, length, width, height) in the mid-Spartina zone at Dean Creek, Sapelo Island, GA. We maintained the treatments over 4 months (July - October 2010), before assessing impacts on prey densitities (mud fiddler crabs, ribbed mussels and marsh periwinkles), and ecosystem properties (aboveground plant biomass, sediment redox potential, sediment water content).

El Verde long-term invertebrate data - Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (LFDP)

The data set consists of 44 files: (1) abundance data for the walking stick, Lamponius portoricensis, (2) estimates of abundance (Minimum Number Known Alive) for 17 species of terrestrial snails, and (3) 42 files containing data on size and mark-recapture estimates of population size for the snails Caracolus caracolla and Nenia tridens from the Wet Season of 1995 to the Wet Season of 2019 (no dry season data for 1995 or after 2012). Note: MNKA estimates are not always identical to the number of individuals indicated in the Mark-Recapture data, because some individuals (e.g., those that were lost before being marked) had to be excluded from calculations for Mark-Recapture estimates of abundance. Note, no data were collected in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Invertebrate dry weight data in various locations, mostly within the LEF at El Verde

Contains information [identity, counts, size, fresh and dry weights] of various collections of invertebrates (and the occasional amphibian or reptile), which has allowed formulae describing the relationship between length and dry wt. of invertebrates to be obtained. Canopy Trimming Experiment (CTE) Canopy invertebrate responses to disturbance

Biodiversity and metacommunity structure of rocky intertidal invertebrates in some coastal ecosystems in Puerto Rico

The goals of this study were to determine the relative importance of environmental (wave power density, wave height) and habitat (e.g., algal cover, slope, complexity of rock surfaces) factors associated with the structure of local assemblages at multiple shore heights and the regional metacommunity of mobile invertebrates on oceanic rocky intertidal habitats. These characteristics and abundances of 41 species of invertebrate were estimated at 10 plots at each of three tidal heights at each of ten sites on the shoreline of Puerto Rico. Luquillo Understory invertebrates Sticky Trap Samples

Sticky traps, designed to resemble resin globules that eventually could become amber, were coated with adhesive and placed on lower tree boles or on logs at one non-gap site at the LEF for 5 days during June 2004, January and July 2005, July 2006 and July 2007 (total 35 samples). Samples were dominated by Diptera (89% of specimens), with phorids representing 60%, mycetophilids 16%, dolichopodids 4%, sarcophagids 2%, cecidomyiids and chironomids 1% each, and other Diptera 5%. Other collected taxa included Hymenoptera (6% of specimens), with chalcidoid wasps 4%, little fire ant (Wasmania auropunctata) 1% and other Hymenoptera 1%; Coleoptera (2% of specimens), with curculionids 1% and other Coleoptera 1%; and a variety of other insects, spiders and mites representing 3%. Two small Anolis lizards and a small Eleutherodactylus frog also were captured. Arthropod composition in sticky traps from the LEF and in Dominican amber were similar. Bisley Grid Invertebrate Data, 1989-1999

The data set consists of counts of terrestrial invertebrates from the grid at Bisley Watersheds #1 and 2, for the years 1989, 1990, 1994, and 1999. Data for 1989 and 1990 are confined to 4 species of terrestrial snails: Caracolus caracolla, Gaeotis nigrolineata, Nenia tridens, and Polydontes acutangula. Canopy invertebrate near El Verde and the Long Term Elevation Plots

We study long-term responses of insects and other arthropods to various disturbances and environmental changes, as well as important roles in ecosystem processes. Five tree species in 1991, six during 1992-1995, and seven since 1997 were selected to represent early and late successional forests at El Verde. These trees were sampled in both gap and non-gap plots resulting from Hurricane Hugo. During the past 27 years, these plots have been subjected to multiple disturbances, including Hurricane Georges in 1998 and major droughts in 1994, 1997 and 2002, in addition to several minor hurricanes and droughts. Each of these disturbances has influenced the arthropod community. This project is ongoing. Soil invertebrate surveys from the Shackleton Glacier region of Antarctica during the 2017-2018 austral summer

During the 2017-2018 austral summer, a survey of soil invertebrate diversity and abundance was conducted throughout the Shackleton Glacier region of Antarctica to investigate whether habitat suitability, taxonomic diversity, and community composition follow predictable temporal patterns after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Soil samples were collected along elevation transects from twelve ice-free areas to capture maximum variation in soil properties, geochemistry, and surface exposure age. This data package includes invertebrate abundances (nematodes, tardigrades, rotifers) for each sample categorized by species, sex, and maturity (juvenile, adult).

Integrated measurements of soil micro-invertebrate abundance and associated physicochemical properties from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993–2022)

This data package compiles three decades (1993–2022) of soil micro-invertebrate abundance data and associated physicochemical measurements collected as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project in Antarctica. Variables include soil micro-invertebrate counts and species richness, along with associated soil physicochemical properties, including gravimetric moisture content, pH, electrical conductivity, soil organic carbon, ammonium, and nitrate. Data originate from both long-term core monitoring efforts and targeted opportunistic sampling campaigns across multiple valleys, including Arena, Beacon, Pearse, Taylor, Victoria, and Wright Valleys. Sampling locations span a range of geomorphic and ecological settings, providing broad spatial and temporal coverage of soil conditions across the Dry Valleys ecosystem. Data were curated to represent the most comprehensive and spatially diverse records available while minimizing sampling bias across years and study types. These integrated measurements provide a valuable resource for understanding the drivers of soil micro-invertebrate abundance and habitat suitability and serve as a foundation for future analyses of long-term ecological change and species distribution modeling in polar desert soils.

SBC LTER: BEACH: Invertebrate community structure and ecosystem functions of 24 sandy beach sites

These data result from a survey of 24 sandy beach sites in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties in 2017 and 2018. We quantified marine macrophyte wrack subsidies, macroinvertebrates, and five ecosystem functions on three replicate transects at each site in order to elucidate the role of marine wrack subsidies on recipient ecosystem community structure and functioning. We also measured shorebirds at each site on three replicate survey days. Data are contained in four tables: 1) wrack cover and invertebrate community data by transect for each site used in our PiecewiseSEM model, 2) wrack cover and ecosystem function data by transect for each site used in our ecosystem multifunctionality estimate, 3) invertebrate species abundance and biomass by transect for each site, and 4) shorebird species abundance by survey date for each site.

SBC LTER: Beach: CO₂ flux, wrack subsidies, invertebrate community, and consumer respiration rates for Channel Islands sandy beaches

These data result from surveys of 14 sandy beach sites on four of California’s Channel Islands from 2016 to 2018. We quantified marine macrophyte wrack subsidies, macroinvertebrates, beach physical parameters, and sediment CO2 flux at each site in order to elucidate the role of marine wrack subsidies and wrack consumers on sandy beach sediment CO2 flux. We also measured the respiration rates of the six most common wrack consumer species in the laboratory. Data are contained in two tables: 1) Mean wrack cover, invertebrate community composition (species richness, abundance, and biomass), beach physical parameters, and sediment CO2 flux, and 2) respiration rates and biomass of each replicate individual for each of the six species.

SBC LTER: Santa Cruz Island: Cover of Algae, Invertebrates and Benthic Substrate

These data describe the cover of benthic substrate as determined by a random point contact method. The presence of algae and invertebrate species as well as abiotic substrates are recorded at 80 randomly spaced points along 40 m x 2 m transects. Only one substrate type is recorded at a given point. Percent cover of a given substrate on a transect can be estimated from RPC observations as the fraction of total points at which that substrate was present x 100. These data are part of a long term investigation of temporal patterns in reef community composition. The sampling locations in this dataset include eleven sites along the north shore of Santa Cruz Island. Data collection began in 1982 and this dataset is updated annually.
