Background optimization of powder electron diffraction to implement e-PDF technique and study the local structure of iron oxide nanocrystals

<p>The local structural characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles is explored using a total scattering analysis method known as Pair Distribution Function (PDF) (also known as Reduced Density Function) profiles derived from background corrected powder electron diffraction patterns. Due to the strong coulombic interaction between the electron beam and the sample, electron diffraction generally leads to multiple scattering, causing redistribution of intensities towards higher scattering angles and an increased background in the diffraction profile. In addition to this, the electron-specimen interaction gives rise to an undesirable inelastic scattering signal that contributes primarily to the background. The present work demonstrates the efficacy of a pre-treatment of the underlying complex background function, which is a combination of both incoherent multiple and inelastic scatterings that cannot be identical for different electron beam energies. Therefore, two different background subtraction approaches are proposed for the electron diffraction patterns acquired at 80 kV and 300 kV beam energies. From the least square refinement (small-box modelling), both approaches are found to be very promising, leading to a successful implementation of the e-PDF technique to study the local structure of the considered nanomaterial.</p>

Experimental microcosm incubations assessing the effect of hypoxia on aqueous iron and organic carbon, pH, sediment organic carbon, and sediment iron-bound organic carbon

To assess the effect of changing oxygen concentrations on coupled carbon and iron cycling in freshwater ecosystems, we performed 6-week microcosm incubations. Incubations were inoculated with sediment and water from Falling Creek Reservoir, Vinton, VA, USA. We started the experiment with 102 microcosms split evenly into oxic and hypoxic treatments. After two weeks, we switched the treatment of approximately half of the remaining microcosms, generating a total of four oxygen regimes: hypoxic, oxic, hypoxic to oxic, and oxic to hypoxic. We sampled the microcosms destructively approximately twice per week, collecting aqueous samples for total and dissolved carbon and iron, as well as sediment samples for organic carbon and iron-bound organic carbon analysis. Iron-bound organic carbon was determined using citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite extractions.

Total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and iron-bound organic carbon in surficial sediment and settling particulate material from Falling Creek and Beaverdam Reservoirs in 2019 and 2021

This dataset includes measurements of sediment properties (total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and iron-bound organic carbon) in surficial sediment and sedimenting material from two reservoirs: Falling Creek and Beaverdam Reservoirs, both located in Vinton, VA, USA. To measure surficial sediment properties, sediment cores were collected at the deepest site in each reservoir using a gravity corer, and the top 1 cm was frozen then lyophilized. Sediment cores were collected approximately once per month in both reservoirs throughout the stratified period (May–November) in 2019 and 2021, though sampling frequency and duration varied by reservoir and year. Sedimenting material was sampled using sediment traps suspended approximately 1 m above the sediment in both reservoirs. Iron-bound organic carbon was measured using the citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite method, and we used a CN analyzer (Elementar VarioMax, Ronkonkoma, NY, USA) to determine the amount of OC per unit mass of sediment.

Measurements, from CCE LTER process cruises in the California Current region, of dissolved inorganic concentrations of nutrient iron and of iron limitation at selected stations and depths, 2006 - 2021 (ongoing).

Measurements are made of dissolved iron, total iron and the potential for phytoplankton iron limitation on CCE LTER Process cruises (since 2006, ongoing) in coastal transition zones of the southern California Current System. This is a weak upwelling regime that is relatively low in nutrients and chlorophyll. Changes in phytoplankton (Chla response to Fe+) and nutrient parameters upon iron addition are also investigated.

Raw and analyzed data for manuscript "Non-thermal plasma deoxidation of copper, chromium and iron surfaces"

<p><strong>Abstract:</strong> Oxide layers on metal surfaces adversely affect processability and material properties in many industrial applications. While several plasma-based approaches for deoxidation were investigated in the past, oftentimes they either work under conditions expensive to create or need a long time for deoxidation. The deoxidation effect of a non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma in an Ar/H2 gas mixture at 100&nbsp;hPa and 400&nbsp;&deg;C was investigated on oxidized copper, iron and chromium surfaces. The chemical structure of surfaces before and after the deoxidation procedure was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that the metal oxide layers on copper and iron surfaces were almost completely reduced after 10 minutes of plasma treatment, thereby exposing bare metallic surface states. Chromium surface oxides were only partly removed after deoxidation process without notable reduction in oxide layer thickness, whereas the surface compounds changed from Cr(OH)3 and CrO3 to mostly Cr2O3.</p>

X-ray diffraction images for the H145E mutant of the iron-dependent superoxide dismutase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

<p>X-ray diffraction images of the H145E mutant (prefixed h145e) which were collected in October 1995 using a graphite-monochromated copper K-alpha rotating anode source (wavelength 1.5418 Å) with a Marresearch 90 cm image plate detector at a distance of 120 mm from the crystal. The data were collected at room temperature in two passes, each consisting of 100 one degree rotations of the crystal. Each image had an exposure time of 20 minutes. The crystal was rotated in the capillary tube prior to collection of the second pass in order to record the 'blind' region of the diffraction pattern and this set of images is prefixed h145eb. </p>

X-ray diffraction images for the H145Q mutant of the iron-dependent superoxide dismutase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

<p>X-ray diffraction images collected from one crystal at room temperature using a rotating anode copper source (wavelength 1.5418 Å) and a 30 cm Marresearch image plate detector. The crystal-to-detector distance was 150 mm and a 90 mm image plate scan radius was used. Each of the 60 images had an exposure time of 20 minutes and corresponds to a 3 degree phi-rotation of the crystal. Diffraction extends to about 3.3 Å resolution. </p>
