Stable isotope ratios of C, N and S in Southern Ocean sea stars (1985-2017)

Sea stars (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) are a key component of Southern Ocean benthos, with 16% of the known sea star species living there. In temperate marine environments, sea stars commonly play an important role in food webs, acting as keystone species. However, trophic ecology and functional role of Southern Ocean sea stars are still poorly known, notably due to the scarcity of large-scale studies. Here, we report 24332 trophic marker (stable isotopes and elemental contents of C, N and S of tegument and/or tube feet) and biometric (arm length, disk radius, arm to disk ratio) measurements in 2456 specimens of sea stars. Samples were collected between 12/01/1985 and 08/10/2017 in numerous locations along the Antarctic littoral and Subantarctic islands. The spatial scope of the dataset covers a significant portion of the Southern Ocean (Latitude: 47.717° South to 86.273° South ; longitude: 127.767° West to 162.201° East ; depth: 6 to 5338 m). The dataset contains 133 distinct taxa, including 72 currently accepted species spanning 51 genera, 20 families and multiple feeding guilds / functional groups (suspension feeders, sediment feeders, omnivores, predators of mobile or sessile prey). For 505 specimens, mitochondrial CO1 genes were sequenced to confirm and/or refine taxonomic identifications, and those sequences are already publicly available through the Barcode of Life Data System. This number will grow in the future, as molecular analyses are still in progress. Overall, thanks to its large taxonomic, spatial, and temporal extent, as well as its integrative nature (combining genetic, morphological and ecological data), this dataset can be of wide interest to Southern Ocean ecologists, invertebrate zoologists, benthic ecologists, and environmental managers dealing with associated areas.

Monthly climate variables of isotope-enabled climate model simulations over the last millennium (850-1849CE) version 2

Here we provide climate fields in monthly resolution for five isotope-enabled model: ECHAM5-wiso (Sjolte et al. 2018, Werner et al. 2016), GISS-E2-R (Lewis and Legrande 2015, Colose et al 2016), iCESM (Brady et al. 2019, Stevenson et al 2019), iHadCM3 (Bühler et al. 2021, Tindall et al. 2009), and isoGSM (Yoshimura et al. 2008) in supplement to Buehler et al. (2021, submitted to Clim. Past. Discuss.). The model simulations were performed with different sets of boundary conditions as described in Bühler et al. (2021, submitted to Clim. Past. Discuss.) in line with the PMIP3 protocoll (Schmidt et al. 2012). We provide output for surface temperature (in K), total precipitation amount (in mm month^-1), evaporation (in mm month^-1), latent heat (in W m^-2), and oxygen isotope ratios of precipitation (in permil).
Additionally, we provide simulation output extracted at cave locations within the SISAL v.2. database (https://researchdata.reading.ac.uk/256/, Comas-Bru et al. (2020)). We include output for sites that pass the resolution and dating screening, meaning that have at least 2 radiometric dates (or are lamina-counted) and provide 36 oxygen isotope ratio measurements within the last millennium.

For version 2, we updated the damaged ECHAM5 precipitation file and the time axis to the iCESM precipitation and tsurf files.

Dust geochemistry and lead isotopes along an urban-rural transect in central Ohio, 2021

This data package contains geochemical concentrations and stable lead isotope ratios for dust samples collected along an urban-rural land use gradient in central Ohio during 2021. The purpose of the study was to characterize the geochemical and isotopic signatures of dust in relation to different land uses, to see how much dust varies across land use and by season. At four sites along an urban-rural transect in central Ohio, we collected weekly bulk deposition samples and analyzed the geochemical composition (47 elements including major elements, trace metals, and rare earth elements) and stable lead isotopes (208Pb, 207Pb, 206Pb, and 204Pb) of the particulate matter. This study demonstrates the tight connection between land use and anthropogenic dust composition in a region where land use is changing rapidly as development encroaches into farmland. This dataset is complete and will not be updated.

Nitrogen and carbon concentrations and stable isotope ratios (δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C) in European moss samples, 2005-2006

This dataset contains nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) concentrations and stable isotope ratios (δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C) measured in moss samples collected across Europe within the framework of the ICP Vegetation programme (International Cooperative Programme on Effects of Air Pollution on Natural Vegetation and Crops, UNECE LRTAP Convention). Moss surveys are conducted every five years and the data presented here correspond specifically to the first sampling campaign, carried out in 2005/2006. During the 2005/2006 European moss survey, approximately 3,000 moss samples were collected at non-urban and semi-natural sites across 16 European countries following a standardized biomonitoring protocol. The dataset used in this study comprises a subset of 1,022 moss samples (approximately 35 % of the total survey), provided by 12 European countries, which were selected for the determination of nitrogen and carbon concentrations and their corresponding stable isotope signatures (δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C). Moss samples collected by each participating country were sent to the Integrated Environmental Quality Laboratory (LICA), Institute for Biodiversity and Environment (BIOMA - University of Navarra), where all chemical and isotopic analyses were subsequently performed under uniform analytical conditions. In addition, this dataset incorporates moss data from Sweden, Croatia and Macedonia for the same sampling year, which were not included in the official ICP Vegetation 2005/2006 dataset. The European moss biomonitoring network was established to provide a complementary, high spatial resolution and time-integrated measure of atmospheric deposition of nitrogen and other pollutants within terrestrial ecosystems. The approach is based on the ability of ectohydric mosses to accumulate nutrients and trace elements directly from wet and dry atmospheric deposition, enabling dense spatial sampling across large geographical areas. This biomonitoring framework supports the assessment of spatial patterns of atmos

Gross methane production and consumption estimated for intact soil cores from agricultural plots including environmental covariates and example raw isotope pool dilution data

This study was performed to determine how different soil moistures, soil sources, and agricultural practices affected the gross CH4 fluxes (i.e., rates of methanogenesis) of soils. We extracted intact soil cores from two agricultural sites in the USA in row crop plots under conventional, no-till, and organic management. We then took them to the lab, manipulated their moisture levels, incubated them at room temperature for 22 weeks, and measured gas fluxes at weeks 6 and 21. We developed and utilized a new form of CH4 isotope pool dilution (IPD) to estimate gross CH4 production and consumption fluxes. This new method can measure IPD in a bag headspace that loses volume over time due to sampling. We fit the IPD model to the data and extracted gross CH4 production (P) and consumption (K) constants. These along with calculated fluxes and covariates measured (e.g., moisture, inorganic N) are reported in the main data table.

Stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in tree rings and basal area increment from mature temperate forests within the AmeriFlux network.

Data were used to investigate long-term changes in tree intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE, i.e., the ratio between CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance) and the underlying physiological mechanisms. We used delta18O to estimate the 18O enrichment in leaf water above the source water, Delta18OLW. Moreover we assessed the relationship between isotope-derived parameters and atmospheric CO2 (ca) and climate factors. Isotope-related parameters included in the dataset are: alpha-cellulose delta13C, carbon isotope discrimination (Delta13C), intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) and the ratio of intercellular to atmospheric CO2 concentrations (ci/ca), alpha-cellulose delta18O, estimated delta18O in precipitation (see Method), oxygen isotope discrimination above the source water (Delta18O). The dataset includes also the following climate parameters: growing season temperature (Tgrs), precipitation (Pgrs) and vapor pressure deficit (VPDgrs) and mean annual temperature (Ta), precipitation (Pa) and vapor pressure deficit (VPDa), and standard precipitation-evaporation index relative to August, with 3 months lag (SPEI8_3) from the global database. Finally, we also include the ca values that were used to calculate delta13C, iWUE and ci/ca. All the equations used to calculate the isotope-derived parameters, including the leaf water Delta18O (see Figure 3 in Guerrieri et al. 2019 PNAS) are also provided.

Marcell Experimental Forest stable isotopes of water, 2008 - ongoing

This data set reports natural abundance water stable isotope values (deuterium and oxygen-18) from the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. Samples of precipitation, snowpack, stream, bog, lagg, soil water, upland runoff, lake water and aquifer groundwater have been collected since 2008 for chemistry measurement. Sampling is ongoing. The samples originate from multiple research plots and catchments, with many of the samples collected as part of the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment. Water isotopes have been measured for some but not all samples. More values from more sites will be added as the archive of water samples is analyzed for water isotopes. The MEF is operated, maintained, and funded by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. The SPRUCE experiment is a multi-year cooperative project among scientists of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory operated by UT-Battelle, LLC and the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station, with funding from the US Department of Energy, Biological and Environmental Research Program

Oxygen-18 isotope ratios, chemistry, and tracers in storm water from WS10 hillslope experiment in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 2001-2003

Oxygen-18 ratios, expressed as Delta-18O or D18O (parts per hundred), measured in WS10 discharge and WS10 precipitation. The time series spans from January 2001 to February 2003, period during which precipitation and streamflow were sampled mostly manually and weekly. The time series also includes some periods of higher frequency automatic sampling in streamflow and precipitation in winter 2001 and winter 2002. The precipitation Delta-18O time series corresponds to the Delta-18O measured at PRIMET station located about 1 km from WS10 outlet at a similar altitude, except from 01-Sep-2002 to 04-Feb-2003, when the Delta-18O of precipitation sampled sequentially on an experimental hillslope of WS10, was used (the collector was located on the south aspect, 91 m upstream from the outlet).

Accession numbers for radiocarbon and stable carbon isotopes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in soil leachates from permafrost soils collected from the North Slope of Alaska in the summers of 2018 and 2022

Leachates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from permafrost soils were prepared from soils collected from the North Slope of Alaska in 2018 and 2022. Soil leachates were then either kept in the dark or exposed to light from LEDs at 305 nm (UV) and 405 nm (visible), and then inoculated with native microbial communities and incubated. At the start of the biological incubations, single replicates of the DOC after dark or light treatment and inoculation were assigned accession numbers and analyzed for 14C and 13C at the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOSAMS) facility. At the end of the biological incubations, duplicates of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in those waters were assigned accession numbers and analyzed for 14C and 13C at the NOSAMS facility.

Data from nitrogen isotopic analyses used to calculate biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) rates and field measurements from lichen, bryophyte, litter, and soil samples in MAT2006 plots, Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station, Alaska, summers 2022-2023.

This dataset contains nitrogen (N) fixation and isotope data from experimental samples collected at Toolik Lake, Alaska during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. Sampling was conducted across multiple block treatments to capture spatial variability and included four substrate types: lichen, moss, litter, and soil. Within each plot, substrates were collected systematically along transects to ensure representative sampling, with lichen samples collected opportunistically due to lower abundance. Samples were incubated in the field under ambient conditions using 15N₂ to measure biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). In 2023, a short-term wetting experiment was conducted to assess the influence of moisture on BNF rates, with subsamples exposed to controlled additions of water. Across both years, data include isotope ratios, incubation conditions, moisture, fresh and dry biomass, and treatment assignments. The dataset provides information on BNF across substrate types, moisture regimes, and fertilization treatments in Arctic tundra. These data support investigation of N cycling processes, the influence of moisture and fertilization on fixation rates, and variability across vegetation types. The dataset is complete for the two field seasons (2022 and 2023) and includes sample- and block-level metadata necessary for reuse in ecological and biogeochemical research.
