Near-shore bathymetry for Elson Lagoon and Chukchi Sea, Barrow Region, northern Alaska

This dataset includes bathymetric sounding points for the near-shore regions of the Chukchi Sea and Elson Lagoon (Beaufort Sea) for the Barrow region of northern Alaska, along with a bathymetric surface interpolated from these sounding points. Bathymetric surveying was conducted during July and August of 2015 with high-resolution dGPS and single beam sonar. Surveys were conducted on an inflatable Achilles boat with the dGPS antenna and echo sounder placed (on the same pole) off to one side of the boat. dGPS and sonar data were logged on different platforms that were then time-synced later. Sounding points follow the path of the survey boat. At any one sounding point; water depth, bottom elevation, bottom ellipsoid height among other fields are given. Sounding point depths were corrected for salinity and temperature. The average horizontal precision for any one sounding point is 2.3 cm. The average vertical precision for any one sounding point is 4.6 cm (dGPS uncertainty) plus 0.1% of depth (sonar manufacturers stated accuracy). The 10m resolution interpolated surface was created with the Topo to Raster tool within the 3D Analyst license for ArcGIS for Desktop. Pixel values reflect water depth in meters. Related datasets include: recent digital shorelines from dGPS survey, long-term shorelines digitized from imagery and results of coastal change analysis (annual and long-term rates of erosion or accretion). This bathymetric data may be of interest to land managers, scientist and engineers for modeling storm surge effects and coastal erosion. This dataset was collected as part of the Barrow Area Information Database (BAID, https://barrowmapped.org) and was originally made available on the BAID project website. In 2021/2022 the dataset was edited in metadata only and repackaged for archival on the Environmental Data Initiative repository by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER.

Chemistry of coastal stream and lagoon water from Puerto Rico - 2021-2024

Water samples were collected from coastal streams and lagoons in Puerto Rico from February 2021 to March 2024 as part of ongoing coastal ecosystem monitoring. These samples were analyzed at the University of New Hampshire Water Quality Analysis Laboratory for comprehensive water chemistry including field parameters, major ions, nutrients, dissolved gases, and trace metals. Sampling sites included Quebrada Fajardo (QFJO) at multiple depths and distances upstream, Quebrada Pitahaya (Qpaya), Laguna Pitahaya (LPYHA), Luquillo streams (LUQA, LUQB), and Laguna Cartagena (LCART). Field measurements included pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, and atmospheric pressure. Laboratory analyses encompassed dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), nutrients (NH4-N, PO4-P, NO3-N), major ions (Cl, SO4, Na, K, Mg, Ca), dissolved gases (CH4, CO2, N2O), and trace metals by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) analysis. The ICP analysis provided enhanced detection capabilities for cations and metals including calcium, iron, manganese, silicon, strontium, sulfur, sodium, magnesium and potassium. Samples were collected as grab samples from the water surface. All samples were filtered through pre-combusted Whatman GF/F for nutrients and organic matter and Whatman WCN Cellulose Nitrate Membranes for metals. Values below detection limits are recorded as 1/2 the detection limit. This dataset provides comprehensive water quality data for Puerto Rican coastal watersheds, with particular focus on stratified sampling in Quebrada Fajardo to understand vertical water column structure and biogeochemical processes in coastal environments influenced by both terrestrial and marine inputs. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Island-Wide Lagoon Benthic Water Temperature, ongoing since 2021

Beginning in August 2021, a continuous time series of benthic water temperature is measured with bottom-mounted thermistors (SBE 56s) at 49 sites around the lagoons of Moorea. The thermistor array consists of a backbone of 36 thermistors placed on the backreef approximately 200 m shoreward of the reef crest and spaced approximately 1 km apart. In addition, there are three cross-shore transects (one on each of the three sides of the island). Each cross-shore transect consists of five bottom-mounted thermistors spaced at 100 m intervals, starting at the reef crest and ending 400 m inshore. All thermistors are mounted on plates at ~ 1.5 m depth. Temperature measurements are taken every 2 minutes.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Turbinaria CHN from a spatially explicit sampling campaign in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia

Nutrients are important for ecosystem structure and community dynamics. To quantify time-integrated patterns of nutrient regimes in tropical lagoon ecosystems, concentrations of nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon were measured from tissues of the macroalga Turbinaria ornata collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia in 2016, 2017, and annually starting in 2019. These sampling periods initially corresponded with distinct seasonal shifts in rainfall and wave forcing and later focused on the rainy season. Results showed that N enrichment was highest nearshore in fringing reef habitats, as well as in bays and at reef passes.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column fDOM in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a mixture of organic materials that are dissolved in water. DOM represents a significant fraction of carbon and nutrient stocks in seawater. To quantify the distribution and dynamics of organic matter in nearshore marine environments, fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM; a subset of DOM that fluoresces under ultraviolet light) was quantified from water column samples collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia during May 2021, April 2022, and April 2023. fDOM components, such as humic-like compounds, as well as fDOM indices, such as the humification index, were measured using fluorometry (for more details refer to methods). Humification Index was higher in bays and fringing reef habitats, whereas Fluorescence Index and M:C ratio were higher further offshore at back reef sites.

Disentangling the effects of eutrophication and natural variability on macrobenthic communities across French coastal lagoons

<p>We present here the raw data and scripts to reproduce the results presented in the preprint "Disentangling the effects of eutrophication and natural variability on macrobenthic communities across French coastal lagoons" available on BioRxiv. Before using the scripts and associated data, we recommend reading the "readme" word document also available, which details the information available in the different data sheets.&nbsp;</p> <p>Preprint abstract :&nbsp;</p> <p>Coastal lagoons are transitional ecosystems that host a unique diversity of species and support many ecosystem services. Owing to their position at the interface between land and sea, they are also subject to increasing human impacts, which alter their ecological functioning. Because coastal lagoons are naturally highly variable in their environmental conditions, disentangling the effects of anthropogenic disturbances like eutrophication from those of natural variability is a challenging, yet necessary issue to address. Here, we analyze a dataset composed of macrobenthic invertebrate abundances and environmental variables (hydro-morphology, water, sediment and macrophytes) gathered across 29 Mediterranean coastal lagoons located in France, to characterize the main drivers of community composition and structure. Using correlograms, linear models and variance partitioning, we found that lagoon hydro-morphology (connection to the sea and lagoon surface), which affects the level of environmental variability (salinity and temperature), as well as lagoon-scale benthic habitat diversity (using macrophyte morphotypes) seemed to regulate macrofauna distribution, while eutrophication and associated stressors like low dissolved oxygen, acted upon the existing communities, mainly by reducing species richness and diversity. Furthermore, M-AMBI, a multivariate index composed of species richness, Shannon diversity and AMBI (AZTI's Marine Biotic Index) and currently used to evaluate the ecological state of French coastal lagoons, was more sensitive to eutrophication (18%) than to natural variability (9%), with nonetheless 49% of its variability explained jointly by both. To improve the robustness of benthic indicators like M-AMBI and increase the effectiveness of lagoon benthic habitat management, we call for a revision of the ecological groups at the base of the AMBI index and of the current lagoon typology which could be inspired by the lagoon-sea connection levels used in this study.&nbsp;</p>

Effect of Low Irradiance on Seagrass from Rødsand lagoon (DK)

<p>This dataset provides the raw and postprocessed data from laboratory experiments investigating the effect of reduced light irradiance on the health status and biomechanical properties of &nbsp;seagrass species Zostera marina collected in Rødsand lagoon (DK). The experiments were conducted as part of Hydralab+ and were completed at Loughborough University. Plants used in experiments were supplied by DHI.</p> <p>During experiments seagrass health status was monitored with a chlorophyll fluorometer. The morphological properties of seagrass blades were measured using rulers, Vernier scales and a scale, and their flexural rigidity was measured via cantilever tests.</p>

Phytoplankton list of taxa and cell biovolume from a subtropical coastal lagoon, South America

<p>We share information about the phytoplankton community from a subtropical coastal lagoon, Laguna de Rocha, a Biosphere Reserve, located in Uruguay, South America (34&deg;37&#39;60&quot; S, 54&deg;18&#39;0&quot; W). The lagoon is ~ 72 km2 with a mean depth of 0.5 m, and is characterized by a strong South-North salinity gradient that reflects its intermittent connection to the Atlantic Ocean (in the South). The lagoon has been subject to eutrophication in the last several decades. The dataset presented here belongs to the publication of Bonilla et al., 2005 (doi.org/10.1007/BF02696017). We present the complete list of phytoplankton taxa identified in a survey (1996-2000) for two sites, South and North, locations described in figure 1 (Bonilla et al., 2005). We also presented the cellular linear measurements and the cell biovolume of the most representative taxa. We believe these data are useful for the scientific community interested in phytoplankton dynamics, diversity and calculation of biomass (biovolume).</p>

Mangroves in the lagoon of the protected Aldabra Atoll: a dataset on species, structure, biomass and the environment

<p>Mangroves are vital for climate change mitigation since they store vast quantities of carbon as biomass and in the soil. Global mangrove biomass estimates are derived from climate-based relationships of mangroves with precipitation and temperature. However, the carbon stored locally is highly variable depending on environmental conditions. This uncertainty highlights the importance of local mangrove surveys and the need to explore factors that regulate forest structure and, therefore, carbon storage. In this study, we investigate the mangrove forest structure, seedling growth, species composition, aboveground biomass, soil organic carbon, and local environmental factors related to variation in mangrove carbon in the lagoonal mangroves on the protected Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles. We present a database from an extensive field survey of Aldabra&#39;s mangrove ecosystem using 54 plots of 5 m x 5 m along a mangrove coverage gradient. From November 2019 to November 2020, we measured the structural attributes and identified six mangrove species from &gt;750 adult mangrove trees on Aldabra. We used the height and diameter of adult trees to derive aboveground biomass and carbon from a tropical allometric equation. We measured the height of 59 mangrove seedlings over three sampling periods. In addition, environmental factors were recorded for each plot. We measured soil salinity repeatedly along the soil column. From 90 soil samples, we measured the physical and chemical properties of the soil, including soil organic carbon and elemental concentrations for &gt;20 elements. Autonomous measures of the water level, temperature and conductivity were made every 10 minutes over 1 year in a subset of 36 plots. The database provides 60% more information that is currently available for Seychelles regarding mangrove forest structure and biomass and is essential for research on several globally threatened and endemic species that depend on the mangroves on Aldabra. Furthermore, the database allows the incorporation of data and insights for the Western Indian Ocean and lagoonal mangroves, where few studies have been conducted on mangrove aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon. To quantify fine-scale patterns of variation in water column nutrients in tropical lagoon ecosystems, nitrite + nitrate, phosphate, and silicate were quantified from water column samples collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia during April-May starting in 2021 using flow injection with an automated ion analyzer. Over the first three years, water column nitrite + nitrate and silicate were higher in bays and fringing reef habitats, and phosphate was higher in bays.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Coupled Natural-Human Systems: GPS-enabled survey of fish in Moorea’s lagoons

This dataset includes counts and sizes of fish within Moorea’s lagoons, with more than 130,000 fish recorded between 2018 and 2021. In summer of each year observers swim through Moorea’s lagoons, observing a 5-m wide swath and recording species and sizes of fish encountered in every minute of swim (about 10 linear meters of sampling). The fish counts are limited to a fixed species list (57 taxa) which was chosen to capture most of the reef associated species targeted in Moorea’s fishery, as well as important herbivores. Only fish larger than 10 cm were recorded, a size chosen to match the small end of fish observed in the catch. The resulting counts were georeferenced based on simultaneously collecting GPS data. Data are presented here on the scale of a minute of sampling. This scale coincides with benthic data which was simultaneously collected but is presented in a different data set (EDI data package: knb-lter-mcr.4014.1) doi:10.6073/pasta/f1e4cbcd79ebbbb0b0cbb79ab2ff8901 These data were collected as part of CNH-L: Multiscale Dynamics of Coral Reef Fisheries: Feedbacks Between Fishing Practices, Livelihood Strategies, and Shifting Dominance of Coral and Algae (BCS-1714704) with additional support from the Moorea Coral Reef LTER (OCE- 1637396).
